The photographs and stories in Writers and Their Cats capture the special bond between wordsmith and mouser. From the six-toed kitties who still inhabit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum in Florida to the mewling muses of mystery writer Lilian Jackson Braun, cats are clearly, in the words of Gloria Steinem, "a writer's most logical and agreeable companion."

Burroughs and Andy Warhol both wrote books inspired by their feline friends. A raw and tenderly funny look at the human-cat relationship, from one of our most treasured and transgressive writers. “The cat is the beautiful devil.” Felines touched a vulnerable spot in Charles Bukowski’s crusty soul. For the writer, there was something majestic and elemental about these inscrutable creatures he admired, sentient beings whose searing gaze could penetrate deep into our being. Bukowski considered cats to be unique forces of nature, elusive emissaries of beauty and love. On Cats offers Bukowski’s musings on these beloved animals and their toughness and resiliency. He honors them as fighters, hunters, survivors who command awe and respect as they grip tightly onto the world around them: “A cat is only ITSELF, representative of the strong forces of life that won’t let go.” Funny, moving, tough, and caring, On Cats brings together the acclaimed writer’s reflections on these animals he so admired. Bukowski’s cats are fierce and demanding—he captures them stalking their prey; crawling across his typewritten pages; waking him up with claws across the face. But they are also affectionate and giving, sources of inspiration and gentle, insistent care. Poignant yet free of treacle, On Cats is an illuminating portrait of this one-of-a-kind artist and his unique view of the world, witnessed through his relationship with the animals he considered his most profound teachers.

Stories and reflections on the many lessons we learn from cats—about life, love, and our spiritual nature “The Karma of Cats is yet more proof that cats teach us to be better humans, and sometimes even save our lives. Read this book with a cat on your lap, then hand it to another biped in need of inspiration.” —Caroline Paul, author of Lost Cat and The Gutsy Girl “What I find most enticing about The Karma of Cats are the golden filaments of respect, delight, and appreciation that weave through the unique voice of each storyteller, these kindred spirits who—like ourselves—treasure the remarkable gifts bestowed upon us by our feline family members.” —Susan Chernak McElroy, author of Why Buffalo Dance There is nothing quite like the love of a cat. Both revered and feared throughout history, cats are unique in the mystical truths and practical lessons they share with us. In The Karma of Cats, spiritual teachers and writers reflect on the wisdom and gifts they’ve received from their feline friends—exploring themes of radical respect, unconditional love, our spiritual nature, and more. Loving companions and wild spirits, our feline friends have much to teach all who welcome them into their homes and hearts. With an introduction by Seane Corn and contributions by Alice Walker, Andrew Harvey, Biet Simkin, Brother David Steindl-Rast, Damien Echols, Geneen Roth, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, Kelly McGonigal, Rachel Naomi Remen, Sterling “TrapKing” Davis, and many more.

Astronauts and Their Cats: A Mother and Daughter Astronaut Team, the Immortal Shape-Shifting Space Cats, Snifferu and Whiskers, keep Patches, the Kitten busy in the Intergalactic Cat Club. They make a rather different family household during the day. However, at night, the space station is cat-shadow dark, except for the human’s cats that mingle with the shape-shifting immortal space cats that prowl the corridors and live among the rows of computers. They are wannabee free cats who travel onboard the space shuttles. Some, unknown to the space program, aren’t even home-grown. "Which cat sprayed gang graffiti on the space shuttle?" A ground controller cat, an orange tabby, studied the photo. "But how did it get there?" He aimed a scowl over his computer at his boss. "Maybe it's a paste-on the astronauts put up to celebrate all those years here," the boss said in a dark-as-coffee voice. The cat’s boss hurried to another computer. Patches, the Earth-born part orange tabby, part Siamese cat, formerly a library cat adopted by the ground controller's boss, sniffed with disdain and curled up on top of the main filing cabinet. A computer screen banner reflected bright red in each kitten's cornflower blue eyes. Rows of blinking computers lit up the room everywhere. The controller called in an expert. Every expert in the room studied the graffiti this time through video monitors as they watched the space shuttle. The controller pressed a button on his phone. "I'll call security."

What with planning their menus, entertaining their friends, listening to their worries and observing their adventures, he has little time left over for his professional life as a writer. But there are rich rewards. One way or another, the cats that Deric and Aileen share their lives with are an endless source of interest and laughter. Few writers have found so much enjoyment in the company of cats, and none has written better about their charm, and the fascinating range of their personalities. Enough to make a Cat Laugh will enchant cat-lovers everywhere, and give Longden-lovers an unforgettable treat.

Few people can appreciate the joy that being owned by a cat brings better than David St John Thomas — the latest in a long line of publishers and authors to pay homage to the very special cats who have entered their busy lives. This is a book for everyone who really cares about cats. Vividly written, sometimes serious, sometimes light-hearted, anyone who has fallen for a cat, however much against their better judgement, is bound to find it uplifting. While cat people are nice (Hitler couldn’t stand them!), the real heroes in this book are naturally the cats themselves. A rich portfolio of feline characters — including the author’s own cats — step off the page, or perhaps lie curled in seductive curves on it, so vividly that you can feel their fur and hear their purr! Rich in entertaining anecdotes and asides, For the Love of a Cat will enhance every cat owner’s understanding of their feline friend and remind them again and again just how lucky they are to share their lives with this most fascinating of creatures.
