This is a drug anthology with a difference. Whilst the usual suspects are here - Huxley, Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson and Irvine Welsh among them - there are many surprise inclusions such as film stars like Errol Flynn who fancied himself as the new De Quincey and Cary Grant who simply fancied LSD. Smashing the myth that drug culture all began in the sixties Rudgley provides a smorgasbord with dishes from the first century AD onwards and from drug cultures across the globe from Thailand to Haiti. Throughout history, drugs have inspired love and fear in almost equal proportions; no account of these substances can be called complete that seeks only to curse or praise them. This anthology is a microcosm that seeks to reflect the diverse worlds that come into being through the interplay of drugs and their users. There are individual sections for the most prominent drugs - cannabis, the narcotics, LSD as well as chapters for the lesser-known substances, such as nutmeg and henbane. As such, Wildest Dreams attempts to represent the complex history of human interactions with psychoactive drugs in all its diversity.

In 1943, small teams of elite British soldiers began parachuting into the mountains of Axis-occupied Albania. They were members of Britain's Special Operations Executive, and their task was to find and arm bands of local guerillas and harass the Axis as best they could. None had been to Albania before, or knew what awaited them. Trying to survive in extreme conditions and formidable terrain, these young Britons lived in constant danger of capture and death, and were plagued by illness, lice and frostbite. Casualties were appalling and most guerillas keener to kill each other than fight Italians and Germans. In his extraordinary new book, Roderick Bailey draws on interviews with survivors, long-hidden diaries and recently declassified files to tell the full story of this remarkable corner of SOE history and finally settle the question of whether or not British communists in SOE, perhaps even colleagues of the Cambridge spies, had conspired to betray British interests.

Peter Ryhiner — hero, adventurer, and romantic — was one of the world's most active wild animal collectors. Born in Basel, Switzerland, on January 1, 1920, Peter knew by the time he was eight years old that he wanted to be a naturalist and explorer — and thought about nothing else. His parents listened to him with good natured amusement, but were not so amused when his interests caused him to flunk out of two schools and precipitated his expulsion from a third for truancy. Eventually, throwing up their hands in frustration, his family cut off his funds, and Peter had to use all his ingenuity to figure out how to continue collecting and studying animals — including breeding and developing unusual strains of mice, taming adders, and holding tortoise races. By the age of twenty, after a brief stint in the calvary during WW II and some time spent working for Geigy, a Swiss chemical company, he and an associate from Geigy's began importing animals as a side venture and Peter was soon launched in the animal business. His journeys led him around the globe, straight through Europe, South America, Africa and Asia, where he captured and sold thousands of animals to zoos and wildlife parks. His adventures were astonishing — trampled, crushed, chased, bitten, and almost drowned — the animals he sought not only provided Peter with a lucrative, though unpredictable, career, but repeatedly inspired a greater and greater curiosity and love for the wild animals of the world. Peter Ryhiner rarely carried a gun, his intention was not to harm but to study and learn and to educate others, and, in fact, he was a man with a vision well ahead of his time. As his success grew he was sought as a lecturer and made many television appearances. Soon, however, currency restrictions, conservation laws, regulations against importing or exporting many species, and transportation costs took their toll. Although increased awareness and protection of wild animals was desperately needed, new laws and higher costs meant that Peter Ryhiner and other wild animal collectors of the time gradually faded into oblivion.

The author's journey is one of love, labor and longing and shows how God can answer prayers in a way that is Beyond Our Wildest Dreams. Seeking to find peace of heart and mind and a sense of purpose the author is led to Medjugorje in Bosnia - Herzegovina because of the reported apparitions of the "Blessed Virgin Mary". His love for "Our Lady" has him embarking on a humanitarian pilgrimage to war torn Bosnia, not only to help those in need, but also to find himself. What he acquires on that trip is a tremendous longing to continue helping until the war is over. Without the financial resources to make more than one more trip he prays to the "Blessed Virgin" for her help and intercession. The result is how God answers prayers and brings people together to accomplish good things. Having volunteered on his first trip to accompany a doctor and his wife and another pilgrim into Mostar (which was being shelled daily by artillery) to deliver medicine, has the four pilgrims discovering that God has bound their lives in a unique way through "the Mother of Jesus". It is from this connection that the author's prayers are answered and the journey begins.
