They've recently become embroiled in scandals concerning sexual harassment and expenses. Every year, they introduce new legislation that doesn't do what it sets out to achieve - often with terrible financial and human costs. But, with some notable exceptions, they are decent, hard-working people, doing a hugely difficult and demanding job. In this searching examination of our political class, award-winning journalist Isabel Hardman tries to square this circle. She lifts the lid on the strange world of Westminster and asks why we end up with representatives with whom we are so unhappy. Filled with forensic analysis and revealing reportage, this landmark and accessible book is a must read for anyone who wants to see a future with better government.

After an explosion of conversions to Pentecostalism over the past three decades, tens of millions of Nigerians now claim that “Jesus is the answer.” But if Jesus is the answer, what is the question? What led to the movement’s dramatic rise and how can we make sense of its social and political significance? In this ambitiously interdisciplinary study, Ruth Marshall draws on years of fieldwork and grapples with a host of important thinkers—including Foucault, Agamben, Arendt, and Benjamin—to answer these questions. To account for the movement’s success, Marshall explores how Pentecostalism presents the experience of being born again as a chance for Nigerians to realize the promises of political and religious salvation made during the colonial and postcolonial eras. Her astute analysis of this religious trend sheds light on Nigeria’s contemporary politics, postcolonial statecraft, and the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens coping with poverty, corruption, and inequality. Pentecostalism’s rise is truly global, and Political Spiritualities persuasively argues that Nigeria is a key case in this phenomenon while calling for new ways of thinking about the place of religion in contemporary politics.

Devoted to birds and wildlife since childhood, Mark’s early scientific research at Oxford, Aberdeen and the RSPB provided a solid background for his management, ambassadorial, and political lobbying activities which were to follow – and his larger than life, yet quietly humane personality has provided the final tools in his own, unique, nature conservationists’ toolbox. In this book, Mark mixes a great many stories from his professional life at the RSPB with personal anecdotes and passionate arguments on past and present issues in bird and nature conservation. He shows us something of the many scientists whose work paves the way for conservation action, places domestic conservation into an international context, takes us behind the scenes to glimpse the politicians who have worked with him, or against him, along the way. Mark leaves us armed with practical tips and a guiding philosophy to take wildlife conservation though the troubled years that lie ahead. A personal, philosophical and political history of 25 years of bird conservation, this book provides an instructive and amusing read for all those who would like a glimpse into the birds and wildlife conservation world – what the issues are, what must be done, how it can be done, and the challenges, highs and lows involved.

Good for Politics = Bad for Americans is very much like its author: American, Frank, Honest, and truthful about that phrase. After just a shy of fifty years of heavy involvement in politics, to the professional politician, it’s like a game. They really don’t care about their constituents; they are only concerned about what will get them reelected! We give out awards for best actor/actress—maybe we should have one for politico’s “most lies,” “slimiest,” etc. It’s really something to think about or just eliminate ability to become a professional politician. Whenever you hear “it’s good for politics,” you know some legal American will get hosed in the end, just as sure as God making little green apples.

The Human Pathway Find The Truth A Guide To Cosmic And Spiritual Elightenment That Will Transform Humanity From Unconsciousness To

Jim Knut Larsson establishes that the foundation for freewill, meaning and purpose is anchored in the latest findings in quantum mechanics and cosmology-empowering us to create the future. The Human Pathway is destined to become the catalyst for a transformation in politics, justice, government, economics and spiritualism. What choices does humanity need to make now, in order to avoid destruction? What goals can we set up to maximize meaning and purpose both for the individual and also for all of humanity? The Human Pathway might be the most important, inspiring and interesting book you will ever read. Our future depends upon your participation! Also included as an addendum: "What to do in case of arrest!" It could save your life or ... someone close to you! A must read! Some more questions ... What is "enlightenment"? Why the earth created humans? What would be the ultimate goals for humanity? How can you unleash your creative powers and create your own future? Why every act, movement and thought is a manifestation of freewill and why it affects the evolution of the universe? Why the living standard in the US declines daily? Why there are more than 3 million people in jail and more than 50 million with a criminal record? People in America always talk about "they." "Back then, 'they' castrated people who were homosexuals. "They" had strict laws against sodomy." They" did radiation experiments on the population. The question is; who are "they"? Revelation: Does it matter if you are resurrected at some point in the future? It is your desire to know the "truth" that drives your desire for resurrection. You will live forever as long as humanity-or if human intelligence lives on forever-because what is living, even if your ego is dead, is you being one with humanity. Individuals only manifest by their "clinging" to their egos. This "clinging" prevents you from becoming creative, happy and blissful. If you get rid of your ego, which should be everybody's goal, you will dedicate yourself to the eternal "now" and to serve humanity. A great quest is to help humanity reach its highest potential and to achieve "absolute" knowledge, "finish" the creation of the universe and acquire the power to recreate everything that existed forever. Then, at that point, you will be resurrected! However there is a final revelation and, if it is revealed to you, it will give you "absolute" knowledge and peace. This final revelation is the logical conclusion of this book. Understand what is written and the truth will be revealed to you. When it is, you will understand that it cannot be directly communicated and understood by others unless they have the same revelation! You will know that you have the final knowledge when you get the revelation and you don't need to seek validation for it! However, you want to share it with others! Study the revelations in this book and hopefully you will get it. You will know it when you do. We need to dismantle many laws and make society free again. We must get the government out of our lives. The benefit you get from reading my book is that you will be able to see through the myths. When you read my book, you will become an enlightened person. Actually after you read this book you will say, "I'm enlightened now." You will have revelations that will make you enjoy life more and become a happier person, but also you will no longer be seduced by propaganda. This, in the end, is a book of cosmic and spiritual enlightenment and enlightenment with regard to politics, economics and justice. What does it mean to be an enlightened person who helps secure the future prosperity and excitement of living for yourself and for humanity as a whole? Another bonus from this book is that you may no longer fear death. You will become a participant in the conversation and the future goals and aspirations of humanity.

A History Of The African American People Proposed By Strom Thurmond As Told To Percival Everett James Kincaid A Novel

Praise for Percival Everett: “If Percival Everett isn’t already a household name, it’s because people are more interested in politics than truth.”—Madison Smartt Bell, author of The Washington Square Ensemble “Everett’s talent is multifaceted, sparked by a satiric brilliance that could place him alongside Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison . . .”—Publishers Weekly “I think Percival Everett is a genius. I’ve been a fan since his first novel. He continues to amaze me with each novel—as if he likes making 90-degree turns to see what’s around the corner, and then over the edge . . . He’s a brilliant writer and so damn smart I envy him.”—Terry McMillan, author of Mama A fictitious and satirical chronicle of South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond’s desire to pen a history of African-Americans—his and his aides’ belief being that he has done as much, or more, than any American to shape that history. An epistolary novel, The History follows the letters of loose cannon Congressional office workers, insane interns at a large New York publishing house and disturbed publishing executives, along with homicidal rival editors, kindly family friends, and an aspiring author named Septic. Strom Thurmond appears charming and open, mad and sure of his place in American history. Percival Everett is the author of 15 works of fiction, among them Glyph, Watershed and Frenzy. His most recent novel, Erasure, won the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and did little to earn him friends. James Kincaid is an English professor at the University of Southern California and has written seven books in literary theory and cultural studies. These books and Kincaid himself have gradually lost their moorings in the academic world, so there was nothing left for him to do but to adopt the guise of fiction writer. Writing about madness comes easy to him.

The Political History Of Ghana 1950 2013

Format : PDF, ePub, Docs

This book is an instructive historical record of the First Republic of Ghana and the triumphs and tribulations of successive governments since 1950. It reminds us of the struggle between Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his political opponents in the period preceding the achievement of political independence for Ghana, the events leading to his overthrow, and its impact on the course of Ghanas history. It is perhaps the most comprehensive history to date of the Rawlings era, the establishment of the Fourth Republic, and the formation of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NDC came to eclipse the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) as the rival of the DanquahBusia tradition manifested in the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), the countrys oldest national political movement originally formed to pioneer the independence struggle but later eclipsed by the breakaway CPP. The UGCC has undergone several transformations since and today is represented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The book well documents the challenges facing independent Ghana, including those related to the growth of democracy nationwide and within political parties. The African liberation struggle, the drama of the Congo crisis of the 1960s, and the Liberian crisis of the 1990s are graphically re-enacted to highlight Ghanas significant role in the events. It is perhaps the best account of the sacrifices Ghana and other ECOWAS countries, particularly Nigeria, made in returning peace to Liberia after a bitter civil war through the successful peacekeeping and peace-enforcement efforts of ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG). The book sheds light on Dr. Obed Yao Asamoahs evolution into a politician of no mean achievement during the creation of the Fourth Republic and as the longest serving Foreign Minister and Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Ghana has ever known, offices he held simultaneously between 1993 and 1997.

The state is often ascribed a special sort of authority, one that obliges citizens to obey its commands and entitles the state to enforce those commands through threats of violence. This book argues that this notion is a moral illusion: no one has ever possessed that sort of authority.
