The expression, "When one door closes, another opens," is a widely used cliché meant to comfort someone you care about who is in distress. Receiving unwelcome news, losing a job, learning that you or a loved one has a medical issue, or having a spouse walk out tends to be devastating. Unfortunately, suggesting to someone that all will be well as their world collapses around them can sound like an empty promise. Even if something good eventually does emerge, it can take time and emotional distance to recognize the that dark cloud actually had a silver lining. Like most people, I was on the receiving end of this advice many times over the past seven decades. The funny thing is that many of my failures, disappointments, and heartbreaks actually led to something positive which got me wondering how often it had happened.Although initially hesitant to put my life under a microscope, I decided I needed to find out. So, I began writing down all the incidences I could remember when metaphorical doors suddenly closed, along with the accompanying tailspin that followed. Interestingly, nearly every time things looked bleak and apparently hopeless, an escape hatch suddenly presented itself. But, was this a one-off outcome or was there actually something to the famous cliché? The only way I knew to find out was to start digging. After reviewing the stories of a large number of famous people, I was left to conclude that Alexander Graham Bell, the individual most often credited with coining the expression, "When One Door Closes...," was definitely onto something. If you're at all intrigued, please join me on a journey of discovery.

When One Door Closes is Christopher J. Scarver's fifth book. It is unique, because it combines his original poetry with some of the special quotes that helped him navigate through rough times in hell. They brought light into his little corner of the dark underworld of the American prison system, a system that commonly crushes so many fallen American citizens. With this book, Mr. Scarver seeks to help newly incarcerated men and women, young and old, to understand the darkness created by closed doors and give them the encouragement to use their time as an opportunity to grow into someone better than they were before those doors closed, so that they will be prepared and equipped to open new and better doors, windows, hearts, minds, etc. Though intended for imprisoned citizens, it can actually help anyone who is going through hard times.

Tattletale is a true-life book told in an easy, "sittin' round the campfire" style that will appeal to a broad audience. It does not deal much with tactics or government policies, but the human side of the grunt and Army aviator trying to survive an unpopular and confusing conflict. Besides regaling the reader with the horror and humor of Americans in combat, the end of the book has comments written by members of my family. Each family member tells how they survived the mental anguish of the first "TV War," wondering where I was in all the mess, they watched on television each night. These comments are perhaps the most poignant part of the book. Some of the information in the book has been written from memory, but most was gleaned from letters and tapes sent to my parents and my girlfriend during those two tours. Listening to my voice on the 30-year-old tapes was haunting but provides detail fresh from the trenches. I left the photos captioned as I had over 30 years ago. I felt they were best represented as I wrote them, hopefully giving the reader a feel for how I was thinking at the time. This book has been a labor of love and hate; I hope you enjoy it.

Lives Of The Saints

Arcangelo Vidi, a middle-aged man in Florence, is tormented, torn between a painting and his wife. In late-nineteenth-century St. Petersburg, Fyodor Petrov returns from the dead and can still juggle, although not very well. Gabriella Sammartini, a talented young mezzo-soprano in Venice, dreams of becoming a hatcheck girl. In medieval England, Eldred the Shoemaker's Son is blessed with an unusual number of noses and multiple pairs of shoes. A Parisian woman carries seven tears with her wherever she goes. Such are the Lives of the Saints, the matically-related, centuriesspanning character studies set mostly in Europe and almost entirely on Earth. By turns poignant and funny, tragic and absurd, Lives of the Saints is at once a thought-provoking meditation on time, mortality, and love, and an entertaining compendium of sheer silliness. In this finely crafted collection of gems, Frank Arricale displays a remarkable range of expression. Whether dealing with the heartbreak of loss or the inanity of everyday life, he demonstrates a brilliant sense of timing and a keen awareness of the human condition."

What's "The Scoop on Ruth"? When you open the book you will enter my world and discover what I have been about. It is a tell all, an honest revelation. That world begins with "All in the Family' and the people and events where growing up happens. In "Sense and Nun-sense" you will be privy to some events even to this day hidden from Sister Superior- like "The Chocolate Cover-Up." Then "Along the Way" there are defining moments and people that ultimately influence us to become who we are.Yes, even when a good Catholic girl flunks Communion. The final section "The 'P' Source" began in the novitiate when no talent me was encouraged to write "gospels." My creative pen found other modes of expression, into writing prayers, greetings, or capturing events. And, there is room for your story to come alive here. It's because I was a copy cat. I borrowed Jesus' style. So, if the parable fits....
