With Disney Princess: Learn to Draw Favorite Princesses, artists-in-training embark on a thrilling artistic adventure with the Disney princesses! This 128-page book includes drawing projects for all 12 Disney princesses and their friends. Disney Princess celebrates the most magical adventures, each woven around a relatable, empowered heroine who inspires kids (and adults!) to realize their full potential. And you can realize your full artistic potential with Disney Princess: Learn to Draw Favorite Princesses, where you journey to a magic kingdom under the sea to draw the little mermaid Ariel, to an enchanted castle where all the objects come alive to draw Belle, and to China during the Han Dynasty to draw the brave warrior Mulan. This edition also includes the newest princess, Moana! After an introduction to art tools and materials, a series of drawing exercises invites you to warm up and learn a few basic drawing techniques. Then the real fun begins! Find drawing projects for all the Disney princesses: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, and Moana. You can also draw their faithful friends, including Cinderella’s mouse companions Jaq and Gus, Jasmine’s tiger Rajah, Mulan’s guardian spirit Mushu, and more. The easy-to-follow instructions in this book guide you through the drawing process; each step builds upon the last until the character is complete! You just need to grab a pencil, a piece of paper, and your copy of Disney Princess: Learn to Draw Favorite Princesses, and flip to the character you want to draw. Draw the basic shapes shown in step one, and move on to step two, step three, and keep going! The new lines in each step are shown in blue, so you know exactly what to draw. After adding all the details in each step, darken the lines you want to keep and erase the rest. Finally, add color to your Disney princess drawing with felt-tip markers, colored pencils, watercolors, or acrylic paints. Plus, learn some fun facts about the Disney princesses as you learn to draw them. For example, did you know that Aurora from Sleeping Beauty is drawn one thick eyelash? Or that Rapunzel’s chameleon friend Pascal has three toes on each foot? Brief character descriptions and art instruction from professional Disney animators round out this exciting artistic adventure. So grab your drawing pencils and go on an artistic journey with the Disney princesses!

The Evolution Of Disney Princesses And Their Effect On Body Image Gender Roles And The Portrayal Of Love

The media plays an essential role in determining people's schemas of the real world, assumptions about cultural ideals, and perceptions surrounding body image, gender roles, and the idealization of love (Behm-Morawitz & Mastro, 2008; Herbozo, Tantleff-Dunn, Gokee-Larose, & Thompson, 2004). Children in particular are vulnerable to these messages due to their high consumption of media and their cognitive development (Agarwal & Dhanasekaran, 2012; Herbozo et al., 2004). Disney is one the most powerful aspects in children's media and their princess phenomenon plays an essential role in perpetuating stereotypes by having their heroines embody submissiveness, being young and thin, and attracting love interests (Do Rozario, 2004; England, Descartes, Collier-Meek, 2011). There are three different eras of princesses: the first one includes Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty; the second one includes The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Mulan; the most recent era includes The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave, and Frozen. Research has shown how the Disney princess has evolved over time and is breaking certain stereotypes; however the most recent era lacks scholarly research (England et al., 2011). Given the power these films have on children's psychological and physical health, this is an area that must be examined. This project researches body image, gender roles, and the portrayal of love in the most recent era of princesses. Research was done by exploring newspaper articles, magazine articles, websites, blogs, and scholarly articles to discover how this era is portrayed. It was found that these five princesses represent progress in the Disney franchise by encompassing both masculine and feminine traits (Rome, 2010). The portrayal of love is also revolutionized in this era by going beyond the romantic type and incorporating familial love and self-love (Law, 2014; Rome, 2013; Saladino, 2014). Body image, however, is the one frontier that seems to lack progress. The Disney princess still seems to encompass unrealistic body features and is often sexualized in her movements. In order for Disney to continue their progressive movement forward, it is recommended that they create more realistic and well-rounded female characters.

The overall goal of this dissertation project was to examine the influence that Disney Princess films, their depictions of princess characters, and various values embedded in the films have on the perceptions of adolescent girls who have been heavy viewers of the films in their lives. This qualitative dissertation explored, through face-to-face interviews, the perceptions and values of 30 adolescent girls between the ages of 12 and 17 who were heavy viewers of the Disney Princess films. This study's findings indicate that these girls perceptions of the Disney Princesses and Disney Princess films deviate from what some previous scholars of the films have observed in the films' content and what they inferred would influence young viewers in certain ways. The findings of this study suggest that these adolescent girls (a) are greatly influenced by Disney Princesses and Disney Princess films, (b) believe that they can achieve any goal they set for themselves, without regard to gender, (c) have a positive body image and accept themselves and their bodies as they are, and (d) understand that long-lasting relationships take work to maintain.
