After purgatory was officially defined by the Catholic Church in the thirteenth century, its location became a topic of heated debate and philosophical speculation: Was purgatory located on the earth, or within it? Were its fires real or figurative? Diana Walsh Pasulka offers a groundbreaking historical exploration of spatial and material concepts of purgatory, beginning with scholastic theologians William of Auvergne and Thomas Aquinas, who wrote about the location of purgatory and questioned whether its torments were physical or solely spiritual. In the same period, writers of devotional literature located purgatory within the earth, near hell, and even in Ireland. In the early modern era, a counter-movement of theologians downplayed purgatory's spatial dimensions, preferring to depict it in abstract terms--a view strengthened during the French Enlightenment, when references to purgatory as a terrestrial location or a place of real fire were ridiculed by anti-Catholic polemicists and discouraged by the Church. The debate surrounding purgatory's materiality has never ended: even today members of post-millennial ''purgatory apostolates'' maintain that purgatory is an actual, physical place. Heaven Can Wait provides crucial insight into the theological problem of purgatory's materiality (or lack thereof) over the past seven hundred years.

These pages bring you a beautiful collection of spiritual treasures drawn from the celebrated Diary of Catholic visionary and mystic, St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938). Arranged by award-winning and best-selling Catholic author Susan Tassone into a handy, day-by-day form, these selections from Faustina’s writings on Divine Mercy – revealed to her over the years in mystical conversations with Jesus himself – will help you do what Jesus told Faustina he wants you to do: trust completely in His mercy and show mercy to others. By means of these daily readings, you’ll come to know – and be enriched by – St. Faustina’s “Secrets of Sanctity,” awakening in you the qualities of Divine Mercy that Jesus himself infused into Faustina’s soul: mercy(of course), but also trust, humility, and peaceful acceptance of God’s will for you. Since her death just over 80 years ago, St. Faustina has been a source of strength and inspiration for millions of souls across the globe, including St. John Paul II who canonized her in the year 2000. Today, she can begin bringing you, too, the strength and inspiration you need. In Day by Day with Saint Faustina, you’ll learn how to: • Grow daily closer to Christ in the Eucharist. • Use your suffering to help others, including the souls in purgatory. • Grasp the striking details of Faustina’s mystical experiences, prophecies, and revelations — and discover what they mean for you in particular. Soon you’ll begin to experience in your soul the graces that were poured into hers. You'll find yourself becoming, like Faustina, an Apostle of Mercy, teaching others – by word and example – about the infinite love and compassion of God, who is Divine Mercy.

Inner Life and Worlds of Soul & Spirit is the tenth volume of the long-awaited "New Light on the Visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich" series. The first part casts light on the nature of visionary experience, prayer, the rosary, the amen, and ways of healing. Part two presents both well-known parables and fascinating new teachings, including an allegory of marriage and of stars at birth. The third part is occupied with heaven and hell, work for "poor souls" in purgatory, the habitations of the heavenly Jerusalem, John's Book of Revelations, the "octangular church," and the Churches Triumphant and Militant. Part four focuses on such places as the spring at Matarea, the pool of Bethesda, the holy sepulcher, the praetorium, and the way of the cross in Ephesus. Part five considers Egyptian star wisdom, the star of the Magi, Jacob's ladder, the writing of the New Testament, the chalice of the Last Supper, the "twelve new apostles," dragons, and satan. The final section presents themes related to Jesus, including his two genealogial trees, baptism, voice, shoulder wound, the cloth used to lower him from the cross, Veronica's scarf, his mantle, and apparitions upon his death. Anne Catherine Emmerich was born on September 8, 1774, at Flamske, Germany. From early childhood she was blessed with the gift of spiritual sight and lived almost constantly in inner vision of scenes of the Old and New Testaments. Later, her visions became concerned primarily with the life of Jesus Christ, although they encompassed also the lives of many saints and other personages (some unknown to history) as well as far-reaching insights into many other mysteries. In 2004 she was beatified by Pope John Paul II. This series supplements an earlier Angelico publication: The Visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich, Books I-III. In 2009 the original notes of Anne Catherine's visions (in 38 notebooks) became for the first time available for reference, and the present series incorporates much new material translated therefrom. With regard to both individuals and themes, every reference thus far located in the notes and in prior translations have been woven together, so the reader can find in one place almost all of what Anne Catherine had to say on each topic. As regards the series as a whole, virtually every individual in the biblical visions (approximately 250 in total) is referenced in the five People of the New Testament volumes. The Life of the Virgin Mary is dedicated to Mary (and her Essene ancestry), and Scenes from the Lives of the Saints treats of fifty-nine saints. The present volume forms a set with Mysteries of the Old Testament and two further volumes cover a multitude of separate themes: Inner Life and Worlds of Soul & Spirit and Spiritual Works and Journeys. The final volume is The Life of Anne Catherine Emmerich.

All Souls Forget Me Not

The All Souls' Forget-me-not is the book for all those devoted to the souls in Purgatory. "Why," the author asks, "does this little prayer-book take its name from the simple flower, the Forget-me-not? Why do they remind one of those poor, forgotten and often neglected souls? The forget-me-not grows in marshy places, by the banks of rivers and streams. And is not Purgatory a dismal swamp wherein the tears of sorrow and desire are ever flowing? Who can count the myriads of souls lingering and suffering in Purgatory, since nothing with the smallest spot of impurity can enter heaven? "Our faith tells us we can help these poor souls; the Church permits us to pray for them; our own heart tells us that we should and must contribute to their aid in every way that we can. On these grounds, therefore, we venture to publish this little prayer-book, which under the title 'The Forget-me-not of the Souls in Purgatory,' admonishes the living not to forget the dead." The All Souls' Forget-me-not places at the disposal of all prayers and devotions sufficient to make offerings and reparations for the sake of the holy souls. It contains several different methods of assisting at Mass, as well as the Rosary, drawn up with special meditations for the faithful departed, stations of the Cross, numerous prayers and meditations for the saints, a small treatise on Purgatory which is largely drawn from St. Robert Bellarmine's work, and the entirety of the Office and Mass for the dead according to the Traditional rites of the Church. This book is ideal for anyone that has participated in or joined a Purgatorial Society The Mediatrix Press edition has been completely re-typeset from the original 1899 edition, and has a larger font than many prayer-books so as to be easier on the eyes.
