Passage To Dusk

Author : Rachid al-Daif
ISBN : 0292705077
Genre : Fiction
File Size : 87.98 MB
Format : PDF, Docs
Download : 184

Passage to Dusk deals with the Lebanese civil war of the 1970s in a postmodern, poetic style. The narrative focuses on the deranged, destabilized, confused, and hyper-perceptive state of mind created by living on the scene through a lengthy war. The story is filled with details that transcend the willed narcissism of the main character, while giving clues to the culture of the time. It is excellent fiction, written in a surrealistic mode, but faithful to the characters of the people of Lebanon, their behavior during the war, and their contradictions. Issues of gender and identity are acutely portrayed against Lebanon's shifting national landscape. The English-language reader has not been much exposed to Lebanese literature in translation, and Rashid al-Daif is one of Lebanon's leading writers. He has been translated into eight languages, including French, German, Italian, Polish, and Spanish. Translator Nirvana Tanoukhi manages to preserve Daif's unusual, moving, and at times humorous style in her English rendition.

Bruce Ross knew something was wrong. He felt displaced and isolated from friends, family, and society. He had no one to turn to, and so he tried to cope with it himself. The fact that he had a disease called depression never entered his mind. He, like so many people, thought that only other people suffered from depression, not someone who appeared to be a well-adjusted, middle class person. "From Dawn to Dusk to Daylight" chronicles Ross's journey and struggles with depression, from his high school years until middle age. During this time, his promising start in life transformed into a dusk, in which Ross lived twenty-four hours of each day in a gloomy and unsettled existence. With eloquence and charm, he recaptures the joys of his childhood in Dartmouth, growing up with his buddies. Gradually, those times faded, and he found himself in the middle of his teenage years and the beginnings of his depression. Ross lived with the pain of depression and its "twin sister," Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), for more than thirty-five years before achieving a breakthrough thanks to the experimental procedure known as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). This exciting advancement in medical science shows great promise for depression sufferers in North America and around the world. "From Dawn to Dusk to Daylight" is the candid and revealing story of the trials and tribulations of living with depression and the relief DBS finally brought.

Mount Andrews was a farming town outside of Clayton, Alabama, and a setting for Dawn to Dusk, a prose predicated on the memories of a young girl growing up in a country town on her grandmothers farm. From 1935 to 1948 this is a credible story of my experience on how we were raised, worked on the farm, and living off the land. I tried to describe the land, house, what growing up on the farm was like and how farming was managed, and grandmother skills to raised crops, livestock, pigs, poultry, vegetable in the 30s and 40s with manual farm machinery. We were raised without a mother and father. Our mother deceased in 1932, leaving four small children. One son, and three daughters. Our grandmother, aunts, uncles help raised us. Our father deceased in 1956.
