The third book of Finish artist Ville Lenkkeri, Existence Doubtful consists of pictures from Antarctica and Tierra del Fuego as well as of a text that uses the physical journeys as a frame, but takes side steps to subjects like humanism, colonialism, greed, representation and the potentials of photography. This book celebrates the matters and events of doubtful nature as well as illusions and uncertainties that shake the reality based world order and save us from the expected, safe and control.Ville Lenkkeri's pictures move inside the disturbing, unfocused zone between reality and fiction.

A visitor to a small town in the utmost North that has lost its entire population is met by a surprising, subjective vision. The abandoned coal-mining community beneath the mysterious, pyramid-shaped mountain appears to him not as a depressing, man-made scar on the Arctic landscape, but as a formerly harmonious commonwealth where quantity had given way to quality, and where competitive hierarchies had been abolished in favor of equality. It is as if the town's remote location had not been a source of misery, but instead had mad it a self-sufficient community, in both form and content. Here, money was deprived of all meaning and had consequently been abandoned altogether as a medium of transaction. In the visitor's dream-soaked mind, the town had once qualified as a utopia in many respects, not least for having failed to exist. In looking for something nonexistent, it is the searching and the dreaming that matter. This collection of photographs is a ballad to all ways of life, and is dedicated to dreams.

Between 2002 and 2007 Belgian photographer Jean-Paul Deridder, who was born in Brussels in 1963, visited movie theaters in Germany and Belgium with a large-format camera. "Everybody should be aware that this will no longer exist in twenty year's time, as films will by then be played from a hard disk," prophesies film projectionist Marc Knoll of the Odeon in Cologne. "The multiplexes are department stores: we're the specialty food shop," explains Margarete Papenhoff, representing the third generation of the family which founded Weltspiegel Kino Center in Mettmann in 1907. These are just two of the cinema people to be found in Deridder's work. His poignant photographs of projectionists with their machines and the theaters themselves relate the history of cinema which is now facing the digital evolution and the vanishing of the flickering light.

"This book, the broadest and most enterprising survey of its kind, showcases the creativity, ingenuity, and inspiration of up-and-coming photographic artists in over 200 images. Curators at the Musee de l'Elysee in Lausanne selected the photographers from hundreds of candidates submitted by more than sixty of the world's top photography schools. The panel's choice was made with one key question in mind: are these images likely to be known in twenty years' time?"--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Toni Schneiders (1920-2006) was one of the most important photographers in postwar Germany, known primarily as a member of the group Fotoform, which he co-founded with Otto Steinert, Peter Keetman, Siegfried Lauterwasser, Wolfgang Reisewitz and Ludwig Windstosser in 1949, and which was pivotal in the renewal of German photography after Nazism. Schneiders' photographs are distinguished by their clear compositional form and their focus on essential geometric patternings-strong contrast effects and a figuration that tends towards abstraction-cast in very specific, identifiable qualities of light. This volume, now reissued in a bilingual edition, is the comprehensive survey of Schneiders' life work. It includes his most famous works from the Fotoform era, the pictures taken during his travels from the 1950s onwards (in Ethiopia, Europe, Japan and South East Asia) and his many photographs of nature, architecture and people.
