An NPR, GQ, and Buzzfeed Best Book of the Year One of The Washington Post’s best science fiction and fantasy books of the year The acclaimed author of The Dream of Perpetual Motion returns with a compelling novel about the effects of science and technology on our friendships, our love lives, and our sense of self. Rebecca Wright has reclaimed her life, finding her way out of her grief and depression following a personal tragedy years ago. She spends her days working in customer support for the internet dating site where she first met her husband. But she has a strange, persistent sense that everything around her is somewhat off-kilter: she constantly feels as if she has walked into a room and forgotten what she intended to do there; on TV, the President seems to be the wrong person in the wrong place; her dreams are full of disquiet. Meanwhile, her husband's decade-long dedication to his invention, the causality violation device (which he would greatly prefer you not call a “time machine”) has effectively stalled his career and made him a laughingstock in the physics community. But he may be closer to success than either of them knows or can possibly imagine. Version Control is about a possible near future, but it’s also about the way we live now. It’s about smart phones and self-driving cars and what we believe about the people we meet on the Internet. It’s about a couple, Rebecca and Philip, who have experienced a tragedy, and about how they help—and fail to help—each other through it. Emotionally powerful and stunningly visionary, Version Control will alter the way you see your future and your present.

A figure from ancient folklore, the doppelganger—in fiction a character's sinister look-alike—continues to appear in literature, television and film. The modern-day version (of the Doppelganger, or “double-goer” in German) is typically depicted in a form adapted to reflect present-day social anxieties. Focusing on a broad range of narratives, the author explores 21st century representations in novels (such as Audrey Niffenegger’s Her Fearful Symmetry, José Saramago’s The Double), television shows (Orphan Black, Battlestar Galactica, Ringer) and movies (The Island, The Prestige, Oblivion).

AfterasurveypaperbyUtkininthelate1970s,slidingmodecontrolmeth- ologies emerged as an e?ective tool to tackle uncertainty and disturbances which are inevitable in most of the practical systems. Sliding mode control is a particular class of variable structure control which was introduced by Emel’yanov and his colleagues. The design paradigms of sliding mode c- trol has now become a mature design technique for the design of robust c- troller of uncertain system. In sliding mode technique, the state trajectory of the system is constrained on a chosen manifold (or within some neighb- hood thereof) by an appropriatecontrolaction. This manifold is also called a switching surface or a sliding surface. During sliding mode, system dynamics is governed by the chosen manifold which results in a well celebrated inva- ance property towards certain classes of disturbance and model mismatches. The purpose of this monograph is to give a di?erent dimension to sl- ing surface design to achieve high performance of the system. Design of the switching surface is vital because the closed loop dynamics is governed by the parameters of the sliding surface. Therefore sliding surface should be - signed to meet the closed loop speci?cations. Many systems demand high performance with robustness. To address this issue of achieving high perf- mance with robustness, we propose nonlinear surfaces for di?erent classes of systems. The nonlinear surface is designed such that it changes the system’s closed-loop damping ratio from its initial low value to a ?nal high value.

Obesity has become an epidemic of global proportions and is predicted to become the leading cause of death in many countries in the near future. As a result, weight control has become increasingly important for many consumers. Edited by a leading academic in the field, this important collection reviews research into the production and use of specific ingredients which can help to control body weight. Part one discusses ingredients implicated in the development of obesity such as sugars and lipids and the body’s response to hunger and satiety. The second part of the book reviews particular ingredients derived from grains, fruit and vegetables, which can assist weight control. Chapters cover ?-glucans, oligosaccharides, starch and carbohydrates. Part three details dairy-based ingredients which can help regulate weight. It covers the use of food constituents such as calcium, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and trans-free oils and fats. Written by an international team of contributors, this book provides food industry professionals and nutritionists with a valuable reference on ingredients for effective weight control. Reviews research into the production and use of specific ingredients which can help to control body weight Provides food industry professionals with essential information about particular ingredients that are effective in weight management Valuable reference for nutritionists and food industry professionals
