More like a stage than a city, Venice is the only city in the world built entirely on water. Its glorious palaces, historic churches and stunning art galleries have captivated visitors for centuries. Explore Venice is part of a brand-new series and is the perfect pocket companion for your trip: a full-colour guide containing 14 easy-to-follow routes, taking in all of the classic sights, such as Piazza San Marco and La Salute church, as well as the atmospheric canals and sleepy little squares off the tourist track. For day-trippers, there is a useful 'Venice in a Day' route which takes in all the city's must-sees. Insight's trademark cultural coverage perfectly sets the routes in context, with introductions to Venice's cuisine and shopping possibilities, as well as an overview of the city's famous Carnival and music and opera scene. Hand-picked places to eat and drink are highlighted in each route and in the directory section, which contains a wealth of useful practical information including a language guide, as well as a range of carefully selected hotels to suit all budgets. All routes are plotted on the useful pull-out map, and the stunning photography captures the essence of Venice.

Concerning architecture and the city, built, imagined and narrated, this book focuses on Manhattan and Venice, but considers architecture as an intellectual and spatial process rather than a product. A critical look at the making of Manhattan and Venice provides a background to addressing the dynamic redefinition and making of space today. The gradual processes of adjustment, the making of a constantly changing dense space, the emphasis on forming rather than on figure, the incorporation of new forms and languages through their adaptation and transformation, make both Manhattan and Venice, in different ways, the ideal places to contextualize and address the issue of an architecture of the dynamic.

Visions Of Venice In Shakespeare

Author : Dr Laura Tosi
ISBN : 9781409476399
Genre : Drama
File Size : 81.82 MB
Format : PDF, Kindle
Download : 933

Despite the growing critical relevance of Shakespeare's two Venetian plays and a burgeoning bibliography on both The Merchant of Venice and Othello, few books have dealt extensively with the relationship between Shakespeare and Venice. Setting out to offer new perspectives to a traditional topic, this timely collection fills a gap in the literature, addressing the new historical, political and economic questions that have been raised in the last few years. The essays in this volume consider Venice a real as well as symbolic landscape that needs to be explored in its multiple resonances, both in Shakespeare's historical context and in the later tradition of reconfiguring one of the most represented cities in Western culture. Shylock and Othello are there to remind us of the dark sides of the myth of Venice, and of the inescapable fact that the issues raised in the Venetian plays are tremendously topical; we are still haunted by these theatrical casualties of early modern multiculturalism.

"Fascinating and richly developed. Venice Incognito is a contribution both to urban studies and to the carnivalesque."—Natalie Zemon Davis, University of Toronto “Venice Incognito is a brilliant reassessment of Venetian carnival and the peculiar phenomenon of masking in early modern Venice. Johnson's wide-ranging, insightful, and imaginative scholarship is matched by his fluid and accessible writing style. This book is that all-too-rare commodity: a scholarly page-turner.” —Patricia Fortini Brown, author of Private Lives in Renaissance Venice “This is a beautiful book about a strange subject: the custom among Venetian aristocrats of wearing masks in public. One of the most original works in early modern scholarship I have read in a long time, Venice Incognito will have a permanent place on most early modern historians’ shelves and will be essential reading for performance studies and theater history.” —Edward Muir, author of The Culture Wars of the Late Renaissance “In this fascinating book, the author cleverly balances the traditional concept of masking as an anti-authoritarian culture of dissembling with the idea of the 'honest mask,' which defends rank and the established order, and produces an excellent, nuanced, and well-written account of the carnivalesque in eighteenth-century Venice.” —Aileen Ribeiro, author of Dress in Eighteenth-Century Europe “In this intriguing and thoroughly researched book, James Johnson takes the reader through the crowded calli, campi, and canals of Venice in search of the varied meanings of the mask in the history and culture of that city on the water. From masking’s first recorded appearance in the thirteenth century to its ubiquity in the carnival decline of eighteenth-century Venice, from the dissimulations of Giacomo Casanova to Arlecchino and the commedia dell’arte stage, from the social anonymity of the gambling halls to the socially charged debate over Goldoni’s radical unmasking of the actor, Venice Incognito traces the shifting functions of the mask and its implications. Just as importantly, the book challenges much conventional wisdom about masking and carnival itself.” —David Rosand, author of Painting in Sixteenth-Century Venice

In the 1920s, a tremendous land boom gripped Florida, and waves of people descended upon the Sunshine State. Between just 1923and 1925 an estimated 300,000 people came to permanently settle in the state, and over a dozen new counties were created in this single decade. Fueled by postwar prosperity, tourists and new residents poured money into the state’s economy and dramatically increased the demand for land, homes, hotels, industry, recreation, commerce, and services. At the height of the boom, when many believed that the bubble had to burst, there came news that a new resort city was under development on the Gulf Coast below Sarasota, and all eyes turned to Venice. Over the decades since its creation, Venice, with its balmy climate, unlimited boating and fishing, and pristine mainland beach, has grown to be a Mecca for thousands of tourists, snowbirds, and retirees. Carved out of a tropical wilderness by America’s oldest and wealthiest union, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Venice was made into a Gulf Coast oasis with Spanish-style architecture, beautiful landscaping, and a friendly network of tree-lined streets and boulevards. Visual documentation of this early era has captured a city in its infancy and a valuable piece of Venice’s heritage.

From the marshy savannahs of the Pacific coastal tidelands sprang the most amazing Venetian resort of the post-Victorian era. New Jerseyborn Abbot Kinney aimed to create a cultural renaissance in 1905 on the sandy shores of Santa Monica Bay. But when the residents of Los Angeles County werent interested, a carnival-like atmosphere replaced Kinneys opera singers, philosophers, and orators. Through the subsequent 100-plus years, the small resort had both extreme highs and lows, but it still prevails as an unparalleled fantasy by the sea.
