Using OpenMP discusses hardware developments, describes where OpenMP is applicable, and compares OpenMP to other programming interfaces for shared and distributed memory parallel architectures. It introduces the individual features of OpenMP, provides many source code examples that demonstrate the use and functionality of the language constructs, and offers tips on writing an efficient OpenMP program. It describes how to use OpenMP in full-scale applications to achieve high performance on large-scale architectures, discussing several case studies in detail, and offers in-depth troubleshooting advice. It explains how OpenMP is translated into explicitly multithreaded code, providing a valuable behind-the-scenes account of OpenMP program performance. Finally, Using OpenMP considers trends likely to influence OpenMP development, offering a glimpse of the possibilities of a future OpenMP 3.0 from the vantage point of the current OpenMP 2.5.

This book offers an up-to-date, practical tutorial on advanced features in the widely used OpenMP parallel programming model. Building on the previous volume, Using OpenMP: Portable Shared Memory Parallel Programming (MIT Press), this book goes beyond the fundamentals to focus on what has been changed and added to OpenMP since the 2.5 specifications. It emphasizes four major and advanced areas: thread affinity (keeping threads close to their data), accelerators (special hardware to speed up certain operations), tasking (to parallelize algorithms with a less regular execution flow), and SIMD (hardware assisted operations on vectors). As in the earlier volume, the focus is on practical usage, with major new features primarily introduced by example. Examples are restricted to C and C++, but are straightforward enough to be understood by Fortran programmers. After a brief recap of OpenMP 2.5, the book reviews enhancements introduced since 2.5. It then discusses in detail tasking, a major functionality enhancement; Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) architectures, supported by OpenMP; SIMD, or Single Instruction Multiple Data; heterogeneous systems, a new parallel programming model to offload computation to accelerators; and the expected further development of OpenMP.

The LNCS series reports state-of-the-art results in computer science research, development, and education, at a high level and in both printed and electronic form. Enjoying tight cooperation with the R&D community, with numerous individuals, as well as with prestigious organizations and societies, LNCS has grown into the most comprehensive computer science research forum available. The scope of LNCS, including its subseries LNAI and LNBI, spans the whole range of computer science and information technology including interdisciplinary topics in a variety of application fields. The type of material published traditionally includes -proceedings (published in time for the respective conference) -post-proceedings (consisting of thoroughly revised final full papers) -research monographs (which may be based on outstanding PhD work, research projects, technical reports, etc.) More recently, several color-cover sublines have been added featuring, beyond a collection of papers, various added-value components; these sublines include -tutorials (textbook-like monographs or collections of lectures given at advanced courses) -state-of-the-art surveys (offering complete and mediated coverage of a topic) -hot topics (introducing emergent topics to the broader community)

Parallelization Of A Multigrid Incompressible Viscous Cavity Flow Solver Using Openmp

Abstract: "We describe a multigrid scheme for solving the viscous incompressible driven cavity problem that has been parallelized using OpenMP. The incremental parallelization allowed by OpenMP was of great help during the parallelization process. Results show good parallel efficiencies for reasonable problem sizes on an SGI Origin 2000. Since OpenMP allowed us to specify the number of threads (and in turn processors) at runtime, we were able to improve performance when solving on smaller/coarser meshes. This was accomplished by giving each processor a more reasonable amount of work rather than having many processors work on very small segments of the data (and thereby adding significant overhead)."

OpenMP is an application programming interface (API) that is widely accepted as a standard for high-level shared-memory parallel programming. It is a portable, scalable programming model that provides a simple and ?exible interface for - veloping shared-memory parallel applications in Fortran, C, and C++. Since its introduction in 1997, OpenMP has gained support from the majority of high-performance compiler and hardware vendors. Under the direction of the OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB), the OpenMP standard is being further improved. Active research in OpenMP compilers, runtime systems, tools, and environments continues to drive its evolution. To provide a forum for the d- semination and exchange of information about and experiences with OpenMP, the community of OpenMP researchers and developers in academia and industry is organized under cOMPunity (www. compunity. org). Workshops on OpenMP have taken place at a variety of venues around the world since 1999: the European Workshop on OpenMP (EWOMP), the North American Workshop on OpenMP Applications and Tools (WOMPAT), and the AsianWorkshoponOpenMP Experiences andImplementation (WOMPEI)were each held annually and attracted an audience from both academia and industry. The intended purpose of the new International Workshop on OpenMP (IWOMP) was to consolidate these three OpenMP workshops into a single, yearly inter- tional conference. The ?rst IWOMP meeting was held during June 1–4, 2005, in Eugene, Oregon, USA. The second meeting took place during June 12–15, in Reims, France.

This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on OpenMP Applications and Tools, WOMPAT 2003. WOMPAT 2003 was held on June 26and 27, 2003 in Toronto, Canada. The workshop brought together the users and developers of the OpenMP API to meet, share ideas and experiences, and to discuss the latest developments in OpenMP and its applications. The OpenMP API is now a widely accepted standard for high-level shar- memory parallel programming. Since its introduction in 1997, OpenMP has gained support from the majority of high-performance compiler and hardware vendors. WOMPAT 2003 was the latest in a series of OpenMP-related workshops, which have included the annual o?erings of the Workshop on OpenMP Appli- tions and Tools (WOMPAT), the European Workshop on OpenMP (EWOMP) and the Workshop on OpenMP: Experiences and Implementations (WOMPEI). The WOMPAT 2003 program committee formally solicited papers. Extended abstracts were submitted by authors and all abstracts were reviewed by three members of the program committee. Of the 17 submitted abstracts, 15 were selected for presentation at the workshop. This book was published in time to be available at WOMPAT 2003, and therefore we hope that the papers contained herein are timely and useful for current developers and researchers. This book also contains selected papers from WOMPAT 2002. No formal proceedings had been created for this previous o?ering of the workshop, and so presenters were invited to prepare their papers for inclusion in this volume.
