Being Down Looking Up

Author : Rob Walters

File Size : 36.46 MB
Format : PDF, Docs

This book is about an unusual journey: a unique journey through everyday surroundings. Rob Walters decided to become a shoeshine boy. He stowed his shoeshine kit, a tent, and a few items of clothing in a trailer, connected the trailer to his push bike and set off from Oxford to visit the old shoe-making cities of middle England. Along the way he polished many shoes, met lots of interesting people, pedalled many miles, and gained a fascinating insight into his own country from a rather unique perspective.Rejected by some, welcomed by many, he polished shoes in shopping centres, solicitor's offices, a kite festival, railway stations, campsites, street corners, and a bewildering selection of pubs. He polished the shoes of dossers, company directors, criminals, Morris dancers, publicans, bikers, policemen, schoolboys, reporters, a bowling green groundsman, an Icelander, and a Latvian – to name just a few. He slept in fields, in woods, and on the edge of golf courses. He was ejected from the Norfolk Show and welcomed into the offices of lawyers and fruit importers.During his journey he met members of the Household Cavalry, topless protestors, a homeless joss stick seller, a man who stole baths in hotels, a submariner, a beaten housewife, a disenchanted solicitor, a rubber recycler, a toyshop owner, and two ghost guides – amongst others. All of them had a story to tell: some sad, some amusing. It is their tales and Rob's own incisive observations that are related in this unusual book. Reading it will transport you to Northampton, the centre of the English shoe making tradition; then through the Fens to East Anglia; back across the country to the Midlands; down along the River Severn to Gloucester; and then over the Cotswolds to Oxford. Progress is at a comfortable cycling pace along the country roads and through the sleepy villages, yet interrupted regularly by diversions into the vibrancy of the cities.

Adam's passion for the wanderlust and his uncanny penchant for this little town and in particular, one house in it, leads him on a trip of discovery and commitment. God wants His children to wake up, stand up and grow up! This book contains poems covering various life experiences that affect God's children. God wants us to behave responsibly, put away selfishness and make it our urgent business to save souls. I've included my personal account of how I kept resisting God and finally ended up painting myself into a corner. My aim is to encourage others who have not yet started a relationship with Christ, to get to know Him. When we try to live life without Him, we will never, ever experience true peace. In recent years I found myself thinking more deeply about God and I wanted Him to tell me what He expects from His children, so I asked Him. Well, imagine being woken in the early hours one Saturday morning with the poem 'Shut Up, Sit Down and Listen!' in my head. I picked up the note pad beside my bed, I held the pencil, but I was not the writer. "Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment.” – Jude One

His turret was in a Bristol Beaufort and his pilot had to fly with almost suicidal bravery at giant German warships before releasing the torpedo. No wonder Moggy’s first pilot cracked up and his second liked to drink. When he was shot down, Moggy miraculously survived – unlike his best friend Stan. Moggy was sent to Stalag Luft VIIIB, an infamous German POW camp near the Polish border, where he was badly treated. Fearing losing his beloved girlfriend Sylvia forever, and risking recapture and execution, he saw the chance to escape alone, thus beginning an epic journey through Nazi-occupied Germany. As the Gestapo shot other escaped British servicemen, Moggy Mayne came agonisingly close to lasting freedom. Instead, as the war neared its end, he had to face the horrors of the ‘long march’ west – and he felt his life slipping away. Would he ever see his Sylvia again?

On November 26, 1943 the United States sustained its largest loss of troops at sea. Over 2,000 U.S. servicemen were aboard the British troop ship HMT Rohna in the Mediterranean on their way to the China-Burma-India Theater of war. Traveling in a convoy, the Rohna and 23 other ships were attacked by German bombers. After a fierce fight that ended with no ships lost, a single bomber made a final run. Armed with the latest technology (a rocket powered, remote controlled Henschel HS-293 glide bomb), it set its sights on the Rohna. Many men were killed instantly by the direct hit. Rescue ships spent hours pulling survivors from the water. By the time the losses were totaled, 1,015 U.S. servicemen had lost their lives. After WWII, the U.S. War Department stated that of 4,453,061 American soldiers carried to Europe, only 1,094 or 0.024% were lost at sea. Of these, 1,015 went down in the Rohna.

Knock Me Up Knock Me Down

Format : PDF, ePub, Docs

No longer is pregnancy a repulsive or shameful condition in Hollywood films, but an attractive attribute, often enhancing the romantic or comedic storyline of a female character. Kelly Oliver investigates this curious shift and its reflection of changing attitudes toward women's roles in reproduction and the family. Not all representations signify progress. Oliver finds that in many pregnancy films, our anxieties over modern reproductive practices and technologies are made manifest, and in some cases perpetuate conventions curtailing women's freedom. Reading such films as Where the Heart Is (2000), Riding in Cars with Boys (2001), Palindromes (2004), Saved! (2004), Quinceañera (2006), Children of Men (2006), Knocked Up (2007), Juno (2007), Baby Mama (2008), Away We Go (2009), Precious (2009), The Back-up Plan (2010), Due Date (2010), and Twilight: Breaking Dawn (2011), Oliver investigates pregnancy as a vehicle for romance, a political issue of "choice," a representation of the hosting of "others," a prism for fears of miscegenation, and a screen for modern technological anxieties.

Most people look forward to their annual vacations. Some want to relax and do nothing while others seek the thrill of diving with man-eating sharks or bungee jumping from a suspension bridge high above a rock canyon to stir up their paltry existence. In Danger Down Under, a group of ordinary people from different walks of life find themselves in an extraordinary position. After recently leaving the military, Gary and his wife Amanda are hoping a vacation to Australia will mend their strained marriage. A day of charter fishing ends with them stranded by a storm on a small island with six fellow vacationers, none of who had any such activities in their getaway plans. Its the kind of thing that would make a body hire a new travel agent. While the group of castaways deal with their survival situation, Dr. Larry Williams, a scientist studying marine life off the northern coast of Australia discovers an unusual chemical imbalance of unknown origin in many of his specimens. As he searches for the cause, local residents began to disappear throwing a panic into the police department and the authorities mobilize to join in on the quest for answers. Research leads Dr. Williams to a library in Sydney that hints of a convoy from Germany sunk in 1943 by the American Navy on its way to Japan with a cargo of nerve agent. He also finds corroborating evidence from the local hotel manager whose uncle served as a coast watcher and begins to expose the cover up of a leak that is causing genetic aberrations in the water; one of which is an over sized Komodo Dragon. Mysteriously the uncle is poisoned. Concern over the fate of the shipwrecked tourists grows as the police deal with missing people from the town and Lieutenant Harry Morgan, commander of the search and rescue station, sends several vessels out to comb the area. Little does Dr. Williams know that there are forces at work trying to hamper his research and prevent him from learning any more than he already has. He eventually convinces his friend Captain Dave Weeks, an Army officer stationed in Hawaii, to listen to his conscience and help him expose the cover up. Risking his career and prison, Captain Weeks steals secret files about the convoy and leaves for Australia to assist the scientist. As science and government head on a collision course, the creature prowling the strait in search of food terrorizes Gary and his fellow castaways. It has developed a healthy appetite for human flesh by the way. Concerned that their safety is in jeopardy they decide to launch Gary out in their life raft to hopefully run down a passing boat or plane only to have him pounded by a storm. He is finally picked up by one of Lieutenant Morgans cutters but, thanks to the storm, no longer knows which direction he came from. The story comes to a head when Gary attempts to lead a rescue mission back for his wife and her fellow castaways before government agents can find them. Standing in their way is the government bureaucracy that wants to keep the secret intact and the creature that mans indifference has created. No boring 35mm vacation slides from this trip.
