The world's leading endurance athletes are not only some of the fittest people on the planet, they are also among the toughest mentally. To train and race at the highest level of competition over hundreds ? and sometimes thousands ? of miles takes preparation, dedication and the ability to push the body and mind beyond conventional limits. Ultra Performance offers an insight into the psychology of these athletes. Having interviewed fourteen ultra athletes, Paul Moore distils the dynamics of the mental toughness they required ? the motivation, focus and ability to keep the mind positive deep in the heart of fatigue. What did it take, for instance, for Rachel Cadman to 'eat the elephant' of the Arch to Arc (running from London to Dover, swimming the Channel, then cycling to Paris)? And to win? That takes steeliness beyond all mere effort, pushing through and improvising when necessary. The stories of these hard-fought wins feature strongly in the contributions from Brett Sutton, world-renowned triathlon coach, and Craig Alexander, one of the greatest athletes in the history of Ironman. Others, like Dee Cafari, the first woman to circumnavigate the world solo in both directions, required the resilience to overcome challenges they had set themselves. With working examples of the implementation of their mental strategies, Ultra Performance not only gives an insight into the toughest moments these professional athletes have ever faced, but also offers advice to readers on how they can adapt and employ these techniques for themselves, often to the non-sporting pursuits of everyday life.

Due to its high sensitivity and selectivity, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) is a powerful technique. It is used for various applications, often involving the detection and identification of chemicals in a complex mixture. Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry: Evaluation and Applications in Food Analysis presents a unique collection of up-to-date UPLC-MS/MS methods for the separation and quantitative determination of components, contaminants, vitamins, and aroma and flavor compounds in a wide variety of foods and food products. The book begins with an overview of the history, principles, and advancement of chromatography. It discusses the use of UHPLC techniques in food metablomics, approaches for analysis of foodborne carcinogens, and details of UPLC-MS techniques used for the separation and determination of capsaicinoids. Chapters describe the analysis of contaminants in food, including pesticides, aflatoxin, perfluorochemicals, and acrylamide, as well as potentially carcinogenic heterocyclic amines in cooked foods. The book covers food analysis for beneficial compounds, such as the determination of folate, vitamin content analysis, applications for avocado metabolite studies, virgin olive oil component analysis, lactose determination in milk, and analysis of minor components of cocoa and phenolic compounds in fruits and vegetables. With contributions by experts in interdisciplinary fields, this reference offers practical information for readers in research and development, production, and routing analysis of foods and food products.

Explores both the benefits and limitations of new UHPLCtechnology High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been widelyused in analytical chemistry and biochemistry to separate, identify, and quantify compounds for decades. The science of liquidchromatography, however, was revolutionized a few years ago withthe advent of ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC),which made it possible for researchers to analyze sample compoundswith greater speed, resolution, and sensitivity. Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography and ItsApplications enables readers to maximize the performance ofUHPLC as well as develop UHPLC methods tailored to their particularresearch needs. Readers familiar with HPLC methods will learn howto transfer these methods to a UHPLC platform and vice versa. Inaddition, the book explores a variety of UHPLC applicationsdesigned to support research in such fields as pharmaceuticals, food safety, clinical medicine, and environmental science. The book begins with discussions of UHPLC method development andmethod transfer between HPLC and UHPLC platforms. It then examinespractical aspects of UHPLC. Next, the book covers: Coupling UHPLC with mass spectrometry Potential of shell particles in fast liquid chromatography Determination of abused drugs in human biological matrices Analyses of isoflavones and flavonoids Therapeutic protein characterization Analysis of illicit drugs The final chapter of the book explores the use of UHPLC in drugmetabolism and pharmacokinetics studies for traditional Chinesemedicine. With its frank discussions of UHPLC's benefits and limitations,Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography and ItsApplications equips analytical scientists with the skills andknowledge needed to take full advantage of this new separationtechnology.

Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English "Beton-Kalender Series" for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn "Beton-Kalender" has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in "ferro-concrete" structures until - as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it - the "tempestuous development" in this form of construction came to an end. However, the "Beton-Kalender" quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a milestone in concrete technology and application. It permits the construction of both more slender and more durable concrete structures with a prolonged service life and thus improved sustainability. This book is a comprehensive overview of UHPC - from the principles behind its production and its mechanical properties to design and detailing aspects. The focus is on the material behaviour of steel fibre-reinforced UHPC. Numerical modelling and detailing of the connections with reinforced concrete elements are featured as well. Numerous examples worldwide - bridges, columns, façades and roofs - are the basis for additional explanations about the benefits of UHPC and how it helps to realise several architectural requirements. The authors are extensively involved in the testing, design, construction and monitoring of UHPC structures. What they provide here is therefore a unique synopsis of the state of the art with a view to practical applications.

Analytical chemists in the pharmaceutical industry are always looking for more-efficient techniques to meet the analytical challenges of today’s pharmaceutical industry. One technique that has made steady advances in pharmaceutical analysis is supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). SFC is meeting the chromatography needs of the industry by providing efficient and selective testing capabilities on the analytical and preparative scale. The supercritical fluid mobile phase, consisting mainly of CO2, facilitates cost reduction costs and helps the industry in meeting green chemistry standards. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the use of SFC in pharmaceutical analysis. Supercritical Fluid Chromatography reviews the use of SFC in drug-discovery applications and describes its application in drug development. When a drug is developed and brought to market, it is tested many times for impurities and degradants, enantiomeric purity, and analytical and preparative isolations—it is tested during discovery and development and for under-regulated and unregulated methodologies. The book describes the use of SFC for each of these applications and discusses more in-depth topics, such as the use of SFC in mass spectrometric and polarographic detection. The book also sheds light on the role of SFC in drug development from natural products and the advancement of SFC with new technologies and its use in pilot-scale operations as a chromatographic technique.
