These wide-ranging tales of menace, tragedy, and comedy offer ample proof that “in the short story, as well as the novel, Graham Greene is the master” (The New York Times). Written between 1929 and 1954, here are twenty-one stories by a “master storyteller” (Newsweek). Whatever the crime, whatever the pursuit, whatever the mood—from the tragic and horrifying to the ribald and bittersweet, Graham Greene is “the ultimate chronicler of twentieth-century man’s consciousness and anxiety” (William Golding). In “The End of the Party,” a game of hide-and-seek takes a terrifying turn in the dark. In “The Innocent,” a romantic gets a rude awakening when he finds a hidden keepsake from a childhood crush. A husband’s sexual indiscretion is revealed in a most public and embarrassing way in “The Blue Film.” A rebellious teen’s flight from her petit bourgeois life includes a bad boy, a gun, and a plan in “A Drive in the Country.” In “A Little Place off the Edgware Road,” a suicidal man’s encounter with a stranger in a grubby cinema seals his fate. A young boy is ushered into a dark world when he discovers the secrets adults hide in “The Basement Room.” And in “When Greek Meets Greek,” a clever con between two scoundrels carries an unexpected sting. In these and more than a dozen other stories, Greene confronts his usual themes of betrayal and vengeance, love and hate, faith and doubt, guilt and grief, and pity and pursuit.

Young people in this country are facing a chasm of doubt and instability. Mental health problems are widespread, university fees are rising, job opportunities are drying up, and the prospect of ever owning a home is increasingly out of reach. But this generation is noticeably absent from the opinion columns, comment pieces and news reports of the mainstream media. From the creative minds behind Rife magazine comes this anthology of twenty passionate voices, all under the age of twenty-four, writing across a spectrum of topics that matter to them. It holds a mirror up to the experience of young people in the UK today, with essays on money, mental health, sex, gender, inequality, education, crime and the future. Bracing, honest and set against what can often seem an apocalyptic backdrop, these stories are nevertheless full of ideas and solidarity to draw on through these uncertain times.

It is the freakishly hot, drought summer of 1921; dust storms in London, parched and cracking earth, autumn tints in July. Holed up in a cottage in the Chilterns, a young writer strives to write the first great novel of the War, impelled by his own suffering. Outward events and inner crises deflect him from his purpose, and love intervenes in the form of two very different women. A visit to the hallucinatory wreckage of post-war Flanders brings strange repercussions in its wake. Everyone is in some way damaged by the terrible years of the war; in what sense can art be made out of such horror?

"During the Second World War, many of those who answered their country's call to arms found their lives changed beyond recognition. The majority were young men - and women - on the cusp of adulthood, who found themselves in corners of the globe that they had never heard of, much less ever dreamt of travelling to, fighting in battles more brutal and terrifying than they could ever have imagined. Many did not return, and those who did found that much had changed after long years of war - themselves included. The return to civilian life was often far from easy." "Now, more than sixty years on, this remarkable generation is fading. Most are now over eighty, and around the world more than two thousand veterans of the war are passing away every day." "Author James Holland recounts the real-life stories of twenty-one men and women from around the world who came of age in the most devastating war the world has ever known." "From the jungles of Burma to the D-Day beaches, from submarines and sailors to fighter pilots, infantrymen, tank drivers, spies, Special Forces and prisoners of war, these twenty-one stories from the cusp of adulthood are an account of a remarkable generation."--BOOK JACKET.

Twenty One Stories Of Christmas

Sometime during his ministry at the Ossining Heights United Methodist Church in Ossining, New York, in the mid 60s, Dr. Arthur W. Bloom conceived the idea of an original Christmas Story instead of his usual meditation at the Christmas Eve Service. Thus, a tradition was started which has lasted even until today. His ministries in St. Paul¡_s United Methodist Church, Northport, New York and The United Methodist Church of Patchogue, New York, continued the tradition. After retirement to South Texas, he began preaching at the Leisure World Retirement Park in Weslaco, Texas. There, too, new stories have been added. Some of the stories are based on the real individuals of the nativity: Mary, Joseph, the Wisemen, the Innkeepers, the Soldiers, the Shepherds, etc. Others were born of his imagination, such as Jacob or The Artist. Many were created after a most memorable trip to Israel. He has tried to use these individuals to bring out some new insight, some new wonder about the Birth of our Lord. There are even three stories that have been developed out of pure fantasy, A Christmas Fable, A Decision in Heaven and The Fable of the Animals.
