Tranquility is a living seismograph of the internal quakes and ruptures of a mother and son trapped within an Oedipal nightmare amidst the suffocating totalitarian embrace of Communist Hungary. Andor Weér, a thirty-six-year-old writer, lives in a cramped apartment with his shut-in mother, Rebeka, who was once among the most celebrated stage actresses in Budapest. Unable to withstand her maniacal tyranny but afraid to leave her alone, their bitter interdependence spirals into a Sartrian hell of hatred, lies, and appeasement. Then Andor meets the beautiful and nurturing Eszter, a woman who seems to have no past, and they fall wildly in love at first sight. With a fulfilling life seemingly within reach for the first time, Andor decides that he is ready to bring Eszter home to meet Mother. Though Bartis’s characters are unrepentantly neurotic and dressed in the blackest humor, his empathy for them is profound. A political farce of the highest ironic order, concluding that "freedom is a condition unsuitable for humans," Tranquility is ultimately, at its splanchnic core, a complex psychodrama turned inside out, revealing with visceral splendor the grotesque notion that there’s nothing funnier than unhappiness.

In that day those who bought into the accepted dogma-whether religious, political, cultural, or economic-became ever more rigid and unyielding. They chose up sides each hiding within their own invented version of God, each declaring the sanctity of their own set of beliefs, each vilifying all others who thought differently. And the inevitable outcome came together in a place called the Holy Battlefield where the armaments of mass ignorance decimated the pawns. Nature had messed up, it seemed, and gave rise to an organism with no natural enemies, and so, to be fair about it, Nature turned man upon himself.Would History continue to repeat itself? All the signs were there. Human nature had not changed and wasn't likely to. Yet a secret society of scientists found a way to forestall what might well be inescapable. However, the government considers the group a terrorist organization, and they are treated as such. Providence will leave it up to one mysterious child to make the decisions grown men and women would not."Hello," she said, clutching the tattered doll to her breast. "Would you like to play a game?"

Thinking they had found that perfect place in the South, on what they thought would fulfill all of their hopes, and where they could buy an affordable plot of land to build their retirement sanctuary. There's never enough time. So we try to cram as much as possible into what little time we have--work, friends, play, rest. But what if How do I fit it all in? isn't the right question? Scripture has a lot to say about time. Taking a cue from Ecclesiastes--"Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind"--and drawing on everything from Augustine's Confessions to conversations with air traffic controllers, David W. Henderson encourages us to move beyond merely trying to open up a bit of margin or to say no once in a while, and to take a purposeful step back from our lives to examine those internal and external dynamics that propel us into busyness and hurry. Sharing honest stories about his own struggles with busyness, he helps readers explore the way the Scriptures frame our time--understanding the times, making the most of the time, and trusting God with the rest. For anyone who is tired of feeling the push and pull of our time-bent culture, this book will be a welcome invitation to rest and to live artful and faithful lives marked by peace and tranquility.

In Search of Tranquility is my favorite from author Kathleen Rigdon Highley so far. It is full of twists, turns and surprises. I was so swept away in the lives of the characters I could hardly put it down. Great read! Mindy Whittenburg IN SEARCH OF TRANQUILITY Dan and Veronica Jones had waded through peaks and valleys throughout their 25 years of marriage, and come out still holding hands on the other side. It was difficult to imagine anything coming between them that could not be faced and conquered with relative ease. But the game of life was about to throw them a curve. . . . What does one do when a promising future in the Major Leagues is snuffed out by a fast balla fast ball that costs our son, our only child, his eyesight?

In the thrilling tradition of novels such as Fatherland and SS-GB comes a thriller set in an America under martial law. October 1962: Fidel Castro launches nuclear missiles at the US, striking Miami. The US retaliates and devastates the Soviet Union. November 1963: President John F. Kennedy and Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson are assassinated simultaneously by unknown snipers. As the US sinks into chaos, the Joint Chiefs of Staff override the Constitution, execute a bloodless coup, and declare martial law. Present day: New York City after decades of martial law suffers a perpetual gray cloud cover and rainfall, a remnant effect the nuclear strikes upon the world's weather. Troops and armored personnel carriers patrol the streets. A curfew remains in effect. All of this is just business as usual for Chief Inspector Isaac January of the US Army's Criminal Investigation Division of the New York Garrison. That is until he is called to a grisly murder scene that appears to be an exact copy of a scene that January has seen ten years before. Is it a copycat? Or something else? January suddenly finds himself the target of a conspiracy that marks him, his friends, and loved ones for death, and that will ultimately lead to the very pinnacle of power. . . "Ken Pakman's Domestic Tranquility is a chilling look at our world as it might have been. Isaac January is a protagonist that could give Lee Child's Jack Reacher a run for his money. This first novel is a must-read . . . and now!"--Joe Weber, New York Times best-selling author of DEFCON One "Domestic Tranquility gives you an action-packed thriller of a story, set against a compelling and darkly-imagined background. It's a great read."--Ian Racey, author of A Traitor's Loyalty "Awesome story. The concept of a police-state America and the way Mr. Pakman fleshes it out is nothing short of brilliant. Isaac January is a heck of a hero in a land ruled by martial law and the Joint Chiefs. As a first-generation Cuban-American, I found Mr. Pakman's alternate America . . . quite fascinating and also quite original. From the explosive hand-to-hand combat scenes to a downright scary America controlled by the military, Domestic Tranquility will make you damned appreciative of the freedoms granted to all of us through the ultimate sacrifice paid in blood by the men and women of our Armed Forces. Truly a good read."--R.J. Pineiro, author of Havoc, Spyware, and 01-01-00
