The Thin Man films are one of the most highly regarded and successful series of films from Hollywood's classic era. This book looks at the people who populated the films, including full chapter profiles of its stars, William Powell and Myrna Loy, whose chemistry together was a huge reason for the success of the films. As Nick and Nora Charles they knocked the stereotypes of on-screen marriage out of the park and replaced the stiff and formal with fun and sexy. But not to be forgotten are the great character actors who added their own special magic to each and every film. Each chapter includes profiles of these actors as well as the creative teams behind the films. The book offers up detailed synopses of each of the films as well as behind-the-scenes anecdotes and trivia. If you love The Thin Man then this is the book for you! Praise for Charles Tranberg's other books: "By virtue of its amazing output and longevity, Moorehead's career, not to mention life, would be almost impossible to contain in a single volume, but Tranberg is in command of his subject, deftly covering the wide expanse of Agnes Moorehead's world." Laura Wagner, Classic Images, review of I Love the Illusion: The Life and Career of Agnes Moorehead. "This is a fond look at one of the most durable and under-appreciated stars in Hollywood history." Tom Clegett, The Santa Fe New Mexican, review of Fred MacMurray: A Biography.

Although characters and stories like Sam Spade and The Maltese Falcon are famous the world over, despite the New York Times' description of him as the 'dean of the school of hard-boiled noir', Dashiel Hammett wrote only five full-length novels in his career. The Thin Man was the last of these, published in 1934. But Hammett wrote two other 'treatments' for investigator Nick Charles and his nemesis Charles Wynant; the 'thin man' of the title. Lost when Hammett retired as a novelist, together those treatments form the continuing story of The Thin Man, which is now being published for the first time. Dashiell Hammett died in 1961. His influence inspired writers as diverse as Raymond Chandler and William Burroughs and changed the face of crime writing forever.

In this, the second offering of The Son of a Son of the Thin Man series, Murder Along the Crooked Way starts in Detroit and travels throughout the Waweatunong, or Crooked Way of Michigan and Canadian waters. Waweatunong is a Native American term for the connected waterway that includes Lake Erie, the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River, and Lake Huron. To look at it from outer space would certainly give the appearance of a crooked way. Nicholas Charles III, the once filthy-rich man, then poor man and currently attempting to get back to rich man status from California and Laura Stackhouse, his native-Detroiter fianc and former hooker are finally engaged to married. The pending nuptials and recent changes in their living arrangements opened the door for our protagonists to spend more time together delving into the criminal element lurking in and around the Great Lakes. After a court battle to recover a portion of his inherited millions that was embezzled by his deceased accountant, Ferguson Malarkey, Nick and his bride-to-be make their first joint purchase. Of all the possibilities open to them, they bought a boat and sail directly into the path of abduction, drug trafficking, and murder on the high seas. In the midst of murder and mayhem, Doc went his way and the newlyweds went theirs. Doc inadvertently crosses paths with the just married, Mr. and Mrs. Charles and rekindles their earlier camaraderie in pursuit of the killer(s). The three sleuths and their crew blaze a trail through Michigans water winter wonderland in an attempt to bring the murderers to justice. Returning crewmates from the Civil War era, Mackie and Cleophus get in on the action with their newly discovered hide and go seek type approach to their existence. From their ghostly past, the two former slaves returned to life in Murder by Proxy, one year earlier. Their adventures along the Crooked Way with their newly acquired post-Civil War shipmates give them an opportunity to fight crime when they are alive, then return to their ghostly state and do the same. As not-so-typical ghosts, theyre able to see things as no one else can and go where no man has gone before. A renewed Native American connection with Laura's distant past adds to the Charles cultural repertoire and provides a few curious twists and turns as well. Old friends reunite as allies in the fight against the sinister goings on throughout the Crooked Way. Who will be the hero? Who will betray the home team? Are Nick and Lauras newfound friends who they appear to be? What is the MacGuffin? Why the Great Lakes? Who did it? Only a read inside Murder Along the Crooked Way will satisfy your desire for the answers to this complex who done it.

The mechanistic age of the twentieth century has required a mechanized medium for expression: the production of filmdependent from the start on machines such as cameras, projectors, lights, and now more heavily reliant on computers, sensitive films, miniaturization, and sophisticated sound recording devices - has flowered in this century not only as a means of popular entertainment, but as a critically acclaimed art form. These essays highlight true cinematic adaptations as completely different products from films based loosely on the gimmick or plot or character of a certain fiction.

In the twenty-second century, a future in which mortaline wire controls the weather on the settled planets and entire refugee camps drowse in drug-induced slumber, no one—alive or dead, human or alien—is quite what they seem. When terrorists manage to crash Coral, the moon, into its home planet of Ribon, forcing evacuation, it's up to Dave Crowell and Alan Brindos, contract detectives for the Network Intelligence Organization, to solve a case of interplanetary consequences. Crowell' and Brindos's investigation plunges them neck-deep into a conspiracy much more dangerous than anything they could have imagined. The two detectives soon find themselves separated, chasing opposite leads: Brindos has to hunt down the massive Helkunn alien Terl Plenko, shadow leader of the terrorist Movement of Worlds. Crowell, meanwhile, runs into something far more sinister—an elaborate frame job that puts our heroes on the hook for treason. In this novel from Patrick Swenson, Crowell and Brindos are forced to fight through the intrigue to discover the depths of an interstellar conspiracy. And to answer the all-important question: Who, and what, is the Ultra Thin Man? At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

My Idea Of Fun

Author : Will Self
ISBN : 9780802193346
Genre : Fiction
File Size : 48.31 MB
Format : PDF, Kindle

Read : 254

Will Self has established himself as one of the most brilliant, daring, and inventive writers of his generation. My Idea of Fun is Will Self’s highly acclaimed first novel. The story of a devilishly clever international financier/marketing wizard and his young apprentice, My Idea of Fun is both a frighteningly dark subterranean exploration of capitalism run rampant and a wickedly sharp, technically acute display of linguistic pyrotechnics that glows with pure white-hot brilliance. Ian Wharton is a very ordinary young man until he is taken under the wing of a gentleman known variously as Mr. Broadhurst, Samuel Northcliff, and finally and simply the Fat Controller. Loudmouthed, impeccably tailored, and a fount of bombastic erudition, the Fat Controller initiates Ian into the dark secrets of his arts -- of marketing, money, and the human psyche -- and takes Ian, and the reader, on a wild voyage around the edges of reality. As we careen into the twenty-first century, Self perfectly captures the zeitgeist of our times: money is the only common language; consumerism, violence, and psychosis (drug-induced and otherwise) prevail; and the human soul has become the ultimate product.

In recent years adaptation studies has established itself as a discipline in its own right, separate from translation studies. The bulk of its activity to date has been restricted to literature and film departments, focussing on questions of textual transfer and adaptation of text to film. It is however, much more interdisciplinary, and is not simply a case of transferring content from one medium to another. This collection furthers the research into exactly what the act of adaptation involves and whether it differs from other acts of textual rewriting. In addition, the 'cultural turn' in translation studies has prompted many scholars to consider adaptation as a form of inter-semiotic translation. But what does this mean, and how can we best theorize it? What are the semiotic systems that underlie translation and adaptation? Containing theoretical chapters and personal accounts of actual adaptions and translations, this is an original contribution to translation and adaptation studies which will appeal to researchers and graduate students.
