“Mary MacLane comes off the page quivering with life. She is before her time ... Moving.” - London Times With her first book - written in 1901, at age nineteen - she was hailed as a marvel by the likes of H.L. Mencken, Clarence Darrow, and Harriet Monroe. She went on to become a pioneering newswoman, gambler extraordinaire, bon vivant, and a star of the silent screen. She influenced Gertrude Stein, inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald, was puzzled over by Mark Twain, and upon her death in 1929 was eulogized as “an errant daughter of literature ... the first of the self-expressionists, and also the first of the Flappers,” as the creator of “that revolution in manners, that transvaluation of values in the female code of behavior known as the Roaring Twenties.” In this authoritative critical edition, the best of Mary MacLane returns to print. With the complete text of her striking first book (with all expurgated passages restored), a selection of her colorful newspaper feature articles, a full-length 1902 interview with the enigmatic author, detailed notes and bibliography, Tender Darkness: A Mary MacLane Sampler reacquaints the reading public with a literary genius who took on the establishment - and won. “Mary MacLane’s first book was the first of the confessional diaries ever written in this nation, and it was a sensation.” - N.Y. Times editoral “Anyone who reads her will never forget her voice.” - Biographile “She reminds us of the power of personal narrative, honestly told.” - The Atlantic “In a pre-soundbite age she already knew how to draw blood in one direct sentence.” - The Awl “She had a short but fiery life of writing and misadventure, and her writing was a template for the confessional memoirs that have become ubiquitous.” - The New Yorker “One of the most fascinatingly self-involved personalities of the 20th century.” - The Age “A girl wonder.” - Harper’s “Confessional journalists have people like Mary MacLane to thank.” - Flavorwire “Her diaries ignited a national uproar, ushering in a new era for women’s voices. Her elegant, ambitious embrace of full-disclosure opened a door to what was possible for women.” - The Atlantic “Fiery frankness made her a pioneer.” - Time Out Chicago “Her poetry is one of extremes: lust for happiness, despair for life.” - Hairy Dog Review “Riveting.” - N.H. Public Radio “I Await the Devil’s Coming is a small masterpiece, full of camp and swagger.” - Parul Sehgal, NPR “Pioneering newswoman, later silent-screen star, considered the veritable spirit of the iconoclastic Twenties.” - Boston Globe “A pioneering feminist - a sensation.” - Feminist Bookstore News “First of the self-expressionists, and the first of the Flappers.” - Chicagoan Check for exclusive content, news, and previews.

A Sherwood Bonner Sampler 1869 1884

Author : Katherine Sherwood Bonner McDowell
ISBN : 1572330678

The Mississippi-born author Katharine Sherwood Bonner McDowell (1849-1883) has long been recognized as one of the pioneers in dialect fiction, but she and her work faded from memory as literary tastes shifted away from this popular nineteenth-century genre. Although her career was cut short by her early death, Bonner left a significant body of published work, most of it buried in periodical archives. This book, which adds significantly to the current resurgence of interest in Bonner, brings back into print much of the author's best writing and will acquaint modern readers with her astute and witty observations about America's centennial era. A Sherwood Bonner Sampler includes regional and European travel columns, historical/autobiographical sketches set in Mississippi, profiles of national celebrities, children's stories, an extended satiric poem about prominent Bostonians, touching personal lyrics, and a variety of short fiction ranging from romantic melodrama to regional realism. Her reports from Reconstruction era Boston reveal a fascinating perspective on postwar sectional differences, while later stories introduce settings along the Louisiana Gulf Coast, in the Tennessee mountains, and in the southern Illinois farm country. In addition, an appendix reproduces the response poem from the Radical Club celebrities, the targets of her infamous satire. Anne Gowdy's introductory essay places the pieces within historical, biographical, literary, and cultural context. Although much of Bonner's writing retains the power to inform and entertain in and of itself, Gowdy's annotations identify events and personages who might be unfamiliar to modern readers, show connections with other writings by Bonner and some of her contemporaries, and identify quotations and allusions. The result is a volume that makes a signal contribution to the ongoing rediscovery and reappraisal of American authors--in particular, one talented writer whom literary history, until now, has too lightly estimated and too narrowly classified. The Editor: Anne Razey Gowdy is assistant professor of English at Tennessee Wesleyan College. She has published articles on Sherwood Bonner and other nineteenth-century writers.
