The skies above London hum with danger. And in the Channel enemies lie in wait... Autumn, 1917. London is not the city that Dr John Watson and Sherlock Holmes once bestrode like giants. Terror has come from the sky and Londoners are scurrying underground in fear. Then a twin tragedy strikes Watson. An old friend, Staff Nurse Jennings, is on a boat-ambulance torpedoed in the Channel with no survivors. And his concert-going companion, Sir Gilbert Hardy, is kidnapped. Then comes the gruesome ransom demand, for Sir Gilbert and four others, which will involve terrible mutilation unless the demands are met. Help comes from an unlikely source when Watson finds himself face-to-face with his old ruthless adversary, the "She Wolf" Miss Pillbody. She makes him a remarkable offer and so an unlikely partnership is formed - the enemy spy and Sherlock Holmes's faithful companion, a detective duo which will eventually uncover a shocking case of state-sponsored murder and find Watson on board a German bomber, with a crew intent on setting London ablaze.

Sherlock Holmes is asked to help a young heiress, the daughter of an establishment figure. She was kidnapped by Chinese slavers but escaped, but feels she may be abducted again. There is a mysterious link to a famous blue diamond stolen from the British Museum. After seeking help from Sigmund Freud, Holmes and Watson are soon on the trail and investigating a suspicious Chinese Laundry in Limehouse with the help of the Baker Street Irregulars. A clever ruse is used to get one of the boys into the Laundry to observe. A Chinese Detective from Hong Kong investigating similar cases there gives them assistance and soon the laundry is under siege after a body is observed being taken inside. Inspector Lestrade and Holmes liberate a young American woman, but the mystery only deepens when the heiress and Dr Watson are kidnapped and taken aboard a ship which leaves Southampton. Holmes gets the help of Mycroft and "C" head of the Secret Service Bureau to liberate them with a borrowed German U boat and the British Navy, and the kidnappers ship is sunk. That leaves the mystery of who the mastermind is and the whereabouts of the blue diamond. Holmes and Watson try to obtain information from some of the kidnapped women but they are too traumatised. They take steps to flush out the mastermind from his Limehouse lair and there are pursuits up and down the country in Lancashire and Liverpool while the cunning Chinese opponent tries to escape justice with his gold and the diamond. This culminates in a shoot out in the London docks as they make a final bid to escape. In a final twist the diamond turns out to have been a fake, with the real one having been cut up and used to pay off debts by the real owner.
