The Shadow of Evil: Where is God in a Violent World is a "must read" for every person who is struggling to cope with adversity and loss: Do you battle everyday with the realization that a senseless tragedy has altered the course of your life? Do you feel overwhelmed by hardship and yet powerless to overcome your circumstances? Have you ever felt abandoned by friends and family who just cannot seem to understand what you are going through? Has your faith in God suffered from the nagging doubt that even He has somehow forsaken you in your time of need? If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, then you must consider reading this book- the author has written it with you in mind! The Shadow of Evil chronicles the events surrounding the murder of the author's mother in 1991 by Wichita's BTK serial murderer. Jeff describes his own painful emotional and spiritual struggles in a brutally honest manner which takes the reader with him through his long journey of emotional recovery, from deepest despair to eventual hope. By sharing his experiences in such a candid manner, readers are able to relate their own sense of loss, emptiness, isolation, or anger, to the author's ordeals, allowing the reader to connect with his message on a cognitive, emotional and spiritual level. Those reading this work can come to understand that their own turbulent mix of emotions and questions of faith are normal, even to be expected. It is the author's hope that once readers have accompanied him down this long road of recovery, they too, will find a renewed sense of purpose and meaning in their lives, despite whatever adversity they have had to endure.

A young woman’s murder leads DCI Neil Paget and his team deep into the shadow’s of one family’s hidden past—where a killer lies in wait. It would the height of British understatement to say retired surgeon Charles Bromley and his step-daughter Toni Halliday did not have the rosiest of relationships. Afterall, she did accuse him of botching her father’s surgery to marry his rich widow. So it is somewhat understandable that Charles isn’t quite stricken with grief when Toni is found murdered on the grounds of Bromley Manor. He’s even less thrilled by the disruptions caused by the ongoing efforts of DCI Neil Paget and his team. Warned to tread lightly by his superiors, Paget forges on with the investigation, doggedly getting to the bottom of a perplexing case—before a killer returns to tie up loose ends.

The battle between good and evil—in both the seen and unseen worlds—was as clearly at play in the era of C. S. Lewis and his friends in the Oxford literary group, the Inklings, as in our own era. Some of the members of the Inklings carried physical and psychological scars from World War I which led them to deeply consider the problem of evil during the dark era of World War II. Were they alive today, their view of a spiritual conflict behind physical battles would undoubtedly be reinforced. Among the Inklings, Lewis was at the forefront of writing on human pain, suffering, devilry, miracles and the supernatural, with books like The Screwtape Letters and more. It is no surprise, then, that he provides the main focus of this book by expert Inklings writer Colin Duriez. J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy offers another rich resource with much to say to the World War II era and beyond. Other Inklings writings and conversations come into play as well as Duriez explores the writers' considerations of evil and spiritual warfare, particularly focused in the context of wartime. Delving into the interplay between good and evil, these pages enlighten us to the way of goodness and the promise of a far country as we explore the way out of the shadow of evil.

Senator Jack McKenzie had two beautiful daughters. Bella Eileen was married to David Matthew Wright, their favored son-in-law.Charity Faith had chosen, Abdul Fattah, who was a Muslim and questions remained as to who he was and where his allegiance really lay. This Senator's family, and other important guests, including the President of the United States, were gathering at the Wright estate for their annual Christmas festivities. David learned Abdel Fattah was plotting, with a deadly terrorist, Abdelmalik Khan, to sabotage the celebration with an attack on the family, leading to the assassination of President Toley. Would this Christmas be their last? Or would they even live to see Christmas? It all depended on David, who stood to lose everybody he held dear to his heart. He vowed to use every weapon at his disposal, and would call on all of the training the United States government had provided him. Nobody threatened his family, or his president, and that included Abdulmalik Khan.

Shadow And Evil In Fairy Tales

Fairy tales seem to be innocent stories, yet they contain profound lessons for those who would dive deep into their waters of meaning. In this book, Marie-Louise von Franz uncovers some of the important lessons concealed in tales from around the world, drawing on the wealth of her knowledge of folklore, her experience as a psychoanalyst and a collaborator with Jung, and her great personal wisdom. Among the many topics discussed in relation to the dark side of life and human psychology, both individual and collective, are: • How different aspects of the "shadow"—all the affects and attitudes that are unconscious to the ego personality—are personified in the giants and monsters, ghosts, and demons, evil kings and wicked witches of fairy tales • How problems of the shadow manifest differently in men and women • What fairy tales say about the kinds of behavior and attitudes that invite evil • How Jung's technique of Active imagination can be used to overcome overwhelming negative emotions • How ghost stories and superstitions reflect the psychology of grieving • What fairy tales advise us about whether to struggle against evil or turn the other cheek Dr. von Franz concludes that ever rule of behavior that we can learn from the unconscious through fairy tales and dreams is usually a paradox: sometimes there must be a physical struggle against evil and sometimes a contest of wits, sometimes a display of strength or magic and sometimes a retreat. Above all, she shows the importance of relying on the central, authentic core of our being—the innermost Self, which is beyond the struggle between the opposites of good and evil.

Antisemitism In Canada

Author : Alan Davies
ISBN : 9780889202160
Genre : History
File Size : 40.47 MB
Format : PDF
Download : 794
Read : 470

This book is the first collection of scholarly essays to treat the topic of antisemitism in Canada, a complete history of which has yet to be written. Eleven leading thinkers in the field examine antisemitism in Canada, from the colonial era to the present day, in essays which reflect the saga of the nation itself. The history of the Jewish community, its struggles and its fortunes is mirrored in the wider history of Canada, from Confederation to the present. The contributors cast light on Canadian antisemitism through a thorough examination of old and new tensions, including Anglo-French, east-west and Jewish-Ukrainian relations. Attitudes to Jews in pre-Confederation Canada, French Canada from Confederation to World War I as well as the interwar years, and in twentieth-century Ontario and Alberta from 1880-1950 are illustrated in various chapters. Of particular interest are the examinations of such well-known figures as Goldwin Smith, the greatly admired liberal historian of Victorian Canada, Adrien Arcand, the would-be Führer from Quebec, and James Keegstra and Ernst Züdel, of more recent notoriety. Analyses are also provided of Nazism and Canadian Protestantism and Jewish-Ukrainian relations since World War II. This is a complex and contentious subject; yet, to understand the ideas and forces that have sought to undermine the Jewish presence in Canada is to understand the dangers that threaten any democratic society, and thereby to guard against them. This compelling collection of essays offers intelligent, readable accounts of an area of Canadian history about which we know too little.

When considering and confronting the problem of evil, we may be asking the wrong question: Why is there evil in the world if God is good and powerful? It may be wrong because it smuggles in an unbiblical premise: God can and should use his coercive power to relieve suffering since he is both good and able. But what if coercive power does not work to accomplish God's goals? This book is an investigation into the possibility that the noncoercive power of the Cross must be at the center of this issue, and that the Cross could reform this question. We could ask, instead, How is God destroying evil and suffering--and why is he taking so long? The answer to this reframed question might be: He is using evil and suffering to destroy evil and suffering for His People; this is how long it takes. While not a "solution" to the problem of evil, could this help us learn to delight in God in a world in which evil and suffering seem at times so relentless?
