VIKINGS, VAMPIRES, AND VANGELS, OH, MY! Sizzling Starts to Three Super Series The Reluctant Viking The hypnotic voice on the self-motivation tape was supposed to help Ruby Jordan solve her problems, not create new ones. Instead, she was lulled from a failing marriage to an era of hard-bodied warriors and fair maidens. But the world ten centuries in the past didn’t prove to be all mead and mirth. Ruby had to deal with a Norseman who had her husband’s face, habits, and desire to avoid Ruby. Determined not to lose the same man twice, Ruby planned a bold seduction that would conquer the reluctant Viking—and make him an eager captive of her love. The Last Viking He wore nothing but a leather tunic, spoke in an ancient tongue . . . and he was standing in Professor Meredith Foster's living room. The medieval historian told herself he was part of a practical joke, but with his wide gold belt, callused hands, and the rabbit roasting in her fireplace, the brawny stranger seemed so . . . authentic. Suddenly Meredith was mesmerized by his bronzed, muscular form, and her body surrendered to the fantasy that Geirolf Ericsson really was a Viking from a thousand years ago, sent only to pleasure her. But as she tried to teach him to eat spaghetti and use a computer, she realized he knew an awful lot about the tenth century—and so little about this one. And as he helped her fulfill her grandfather's dream of re-creating a Viking ship, he awakened her to dreams of her own. Until she wondered if the hand of fate had thrust her into the loving arms of . . . The Last Viking Kiss of Pride Some men are too bad to be true . . . Is he really a Viking with a vampire's bite? An angel with the body of a thunder god? A lone wolf with love on his mind? Alexandra Kelly, his prey, thinks Vikar Sigurdsson is either flat-out crazy or he's trying to maneuver her into his bed—which is hardly where a professional reporter should conduct an interview, tempting as that prospect might be. And some men are too good to be true . . . Until Vikar does something a teensy bit unexpected, and Alex begins to wonder whether her mystery man could really be everything he says he is: a Viking Vampire Angel on a thousand-year-long mission with his pack of sinful brothers—and a man who's finally found the woman of his dreams. By then, Vikar is already wrapping his chiseled arms around Alex's body . . . and sinking his wicked fangs right into her neck. If this is sin, why does it feel so good?

What in the name of Thor could be making this Viking so blue? Eating haggis? Listening to those insufferable bagpipes? Traveling through Scotland with the world's worst poet? Searching for the infuriatingly inept witch who's cursed his face . . . and even more important parts? For Rurik the Viking, life has not been worth living since he left Maire of the Moors. Oh, it's not that he misses her fiery red tresses or kissome lips. Nay, it's the embarrassing blue zigzag she put on his face after their one wild night of loving. For a fierce warrior who prides himself on his immense height, his expertise in bedsport, and his well-honed muscles, this blue streak is the last straw. In the end, he'll bring the witchling to heel, or die trying. Mayhap, he'll even beg her to wed . . . so long as she can promise he'll no longer be . . .

Gods And Demons Priests And Scholars

Author : Bruce Lincoln

Genre : Religion
File Size : 59.83 MB
Format : PDF, Docs

Bruce Lincoln is one of the most prominent advocates within religious studies for an uncompromisingly critical approach to the phenomenon of religion—historians of religions, he believes, should resist the preferred narratives and self-understanding of religions themselves, especially when their stories are endowed with sacred origins and authority. In Gods and Demons, Priests and Scholars, Lincoln assembles a collection of essays that both illustrates and reveals the benefits of his methodology, making a case for a critical religious studies that starts with skepticism but is neither cynical nor crude. The book begins with Lincoln’s “Theses on Method” and ends with “The (Un)discipline of Religious Studies,” in which he unsparingly considers the failings of uncritical and nonhistorical approaches to the study of religions. In between, Lincoln presents new examinations of problems in ancient religions and relates these cases to larger comparative themes. While bringing to light important features of the formation of pantheons and the constructions of demons, chaos, and the dead, Lincoln demonstrates that historians of religions should take religious things—inspired scriptures, sacred centers, salvific rites, communities graced by divine favor—as the theories of interested humans that shape perception, community, and experiences. As he shows, it is for their terrestrial influence, and not their sacred origins, that religious phenomena merit consideration by the historian. Tackling many questions central to religious study, Gods and Demons, Priests and Scholars will be a touchstone for the history of religions in the twenty-first century.

Over one thousand years ago, kingdoms across Europe were changed forever as the Vikings sailed in. Prepare here to board an iconic Norse ship and be transported into the battles, the legacies, and the everyday lives of these intrepid warriors. From buried treasure to noble laws, to murderouos myths: this the story of the Vikings. The Vikings were the original explorers with a legacy going back to 800 AD. Popular culture thinks the 1600s was the Age of Discovery when Europe discovered the Americas. Did you know some of the most exciting days of seafaring expansion took place close to a thousand years before that when a group of seafaring Scandinavians departed their homelands for the British Isles, seeking great power and prosperity at all costs? For the next three centuries, the daring voyagers pillaged and plundered their way to a vast kingdom, and in the process, developed new trade routes, spreading everything from commerce to art to language from the Far East to the New World. The pages of this book will take you into the Norseman's universe - their daily lives and ritual deaths. We’ll explore the magical mythology of the Norse gods, go behind-the-scenes of the hit History series Vikings, and examine their lasting legacy on the today's world. We even cover pop culture too — much of Game of Thrones was based on the vikings (and countless other shows and movies too). Here, in these richly illustrated pages, is everything you need to know about the medieval warriors of the sea.

When a rampaging band of marauders sets the small village of Aventine-on-Thames afire, virginal Leta is roused by her brother and sent scampering into the nearby woods for safety. Apparently out of harm’s way, she beds down under a shrub and weathers the night. As dawn breaks, Leta is torn from her cubby by Ragnar, the leader of a rowdy gang of Vikings. At once, he terrifies her, but Leta cannot deny the excitement – forbidden excitement – that this man from the North raises makes her feel. Will she run? Will she hide? Or will she give up her purity, give up her innocence, and be BRED BY THE VIKING? Warning: This 10,000+ word wild, erotic sizzler features forbidden pleasures, danger, excitement, a reluctant maid, defloration, a first time sexual experience, a Viking warrior with a gruff exterior and a heart of gold, rough sex play, hair pulling, deep throating, explicit sexual situations, a huge internal finish, and the promise of something Leta has always wanted. Excerpt: “Finn, Hrolfgar, Tyr, Vorix,” he barked, “go. Go ahead. We’ll catch up.” He turned back to me and his hands immediately went to either side of my face. Hard, callused and hot, his fingers traced lines down my slender face. Despite myself, despite what he had done, or not done to my village, I couldn’t help but be taken with Ragnar. The way he towered above me, how he spoke softly, but with tremendous force, in his curious accent. And of course, those eyes that drew me in and refused to let me go. “Turn,” he said. As he watched, I slowly turned in a circle, becoming very aware of exactly how tattered my clothing was. Not much left of it after my run through the forest. A tatter of my underclothes remained, little more than a rag. Along with a shred of cloth that approximated half a cloak around my shoulders and my torso, that all I had shielding me from the elements, and from the Viking’s penetrating gaze. When I returned to face him, the coldness of his stare had gone, replaced by something wilder, almost unhinged. The left corner of Ragnar’s mouth curled in a grin and he took a step closer to me. His hand warmed my side where all the cloth had been ripped away. He touched the side of my face with the other, then my neck. Shivers wracked my body. Never in my life had a man seen me in such a state. Never had I felt such a hungry, powerful touch. And never before had I wanted anything as badly as I wanted this huge warrior to rip away the rest, push me face down and ravish me.

The Reluctant Film Art Of Woody Allen

ISBN : 9780813139241
Genre : Biography & Autobiography
File Size : 51.35 MB
Format : PDF, ePub, Docs

For three decades, no American filmmaker has been as prolific -- or as paradoxical -- as Woody Allen. From Play It Again, Sam (1972) through Celebrity (1998) and Sweet and Lowdown (1999), Allen has produced an average of one film a year, yet in many of these films Allen reveals a progressively skeptical attitude toward both the value of art and the cultural contributions of artists. In examining Allen's filmmaking career, The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen demonstrates that his movies often question whether the projected illusions of magicians/artists benefit audience or artists. Other Allen films dramatize the opposed conviction that the consoling, life-redeeming illusions of art are the best solution humanity has devised to the existential dilemma of being a death-foreseeing animal. Peter Bailey demonstrates how Allen's films repeatedly revisit and reconfigure this tension between image and reality, art and life, fabrication and factuality, with each film reaching provisional resolutions that a subsequent movie will revise. Merging criticism and biography, Bailey identifies Allen's ambivalent views of the artistic enterprise as a key to understanding his entire filmmaking career. Because of its focus upon filmmaker Sandy Bates's conflict between entertaining audiences and confronting them with bleak human actualities, Stardust Memories is a central focus of the book. Bailey's examination of Allen's art/life dialectic also draws from the off screen drama of Allen's very public separation from Mia Farrow, and the book accordingly construes such post-scandal films as Bullets Over Broadway and Mighty Aphrodite as Allen's oblique cinematic responses to that tabloid tempest. By illuminating the thematic conflict at the heart of Allen's work, Bailey seeks not only to clarify the aesthetic designs of individual Allen films but to demonstrate how his oeuvre enacts an ongoing debate the screenwriter/director has been conducting with himself between creating cinematic narratives affirming the saving powers of the human imagination and making films acknowledging the irresolvably dark truths of the human condition.

In the tradition of The Cookbook Collector comes a funny, romantic novel about a young woman finding her calling while saving a used bookstore. Maggie Duprv®s, recently "involuntarily separated from payroll" at a Silicon Valley startup, is whiling away her days in The Dragonfly's Used Books, a Mountain View institution, waiting for the Next Big Thing to come along. When the opportunity arises for her to network at a Bay Area book club, she jumps at the chance-even if it means having to read Lady Chatterley's Lover, a book she hasn't encountered since college, in an evening. But the edition she finds at the bookstore is no Penguin Classics Chatterley-it's an ancient hardcover with notes in the margins between two besotted lovers of long ago. What Maggie finds in her search for the lovers and their fate, and what she learns about herself in the process, will surprise and move readers. Witty and sharp-eyed in its treatment of tech world excesses, but with real warmth at its core, The Moment of Everything is a wonderful read.

The Viking reputation is of bloodthirsty seafaring warriors, repeatedly plundering the British Isles and the North Atlantic throughout the early Middle Ages. Yet Vikings were also traders, settlers, and farmers, with a complex artistic and linguistic culture, whose expansion overseas led them to cross the Atlantic for the first time in European history. Highlighting the latest archaeological evidence, Julian Richards reveals the whole Viking world: their history, society and culture, and their expansion overseas for trade, colonization, and plunder. We also look at the Viking identity, through their artistic expression, rune stones, their ships, and their religion. The Viking story is also brought up to date, by examining their legacy from the medieval Icelandic sagas to 19th Century nationalism, Wagner, and the Nazis. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

When Leta escaped from the terror of marauders destroying her home village, the last thing she expected was to fall into the arms of Ragnar Thyrsson, a mighty Viking who swore to keep her safe. After a harrowing escape from a group of English brigands, Ragnar scouts ahead to make sure the path is clear. Will Finn, Hrolfgar, Vorix and Tyr, be able to keep their savage lust under control, or will Leta be CLAIMED BY THE VIKINGS? Warning: This 13500+ word standalone erotic sizzler features four mighty warriors with great appetites for meat, mead and women, a VERY rough night in a meadow, tender love, deep secrets, explicit group sex, double penetration, facial and internal finishes, and a lass with a face and body so sweet that Freya herself is jealous! A taste to tickle your fancy... The night was full dark, but the campfire still had a bit of smolder to it – enough for me to barely make out the man’s hard features, and the small gap between his front teeth. “What’s going on?” I whispered. “We’re alone, finally, is what’s going on.” “What do you mean we’re finally alone? Hrolfgar’s right outside the tent on duty. And anyway, why does it matter if we’re in a tent together? What’s so exciting about that?” “Hrolfgar’s drunk and asleep. And if you can’t figure out what there is to be excited about, I’ll show you.” A vague hint of the meat from earlier, and the mead we passed around the fire lingered on the youngest Viking’s breath as his lips pressed to mine and his fingers tangled in the hair on the back of my head. “What are you-? No! Get off me!” I pushed him back. I tried to hold him at arm’s length, but tiny little Leta controlling one of these husky warriors was just not very likely. Soon he had both of my wrists in his hands and flipped me over on my back. With him between my legs, I felt the Viking’s prick, hard against my body. I twisted my hips, this way and that, to unbalance him, but as time went on, my efforts started to flag a little, and then I gave up. Both he and I watched each other’s face for a few moments. Breathing in, breathing out. His chest rose and fell, and when he let go of my wrists instead of slapping at him or trying to stick my thumbs in his eyes, I flattened my palms against the muscles above his navel. My fingertips bounced over his rippled, ridged stomach until I touched his... “What’s this?” Hrolfgar’s voice was thick and soupy, but he was awake, at least. “What’s going on? Vorix? Why are you in my – hey, wait a minute.” “Relax, big man. We’re just warming up for the night.” He slipped a hand underneath my waist and when I started to speak, he clamped hard. I let out a little “yeep!” and shut my mouth. “Get out of here, fool,” the bigger man said. “She’s Ragnar’s. Don’t make a mistake you’ll regret when you wake up hung-over.” “Oh, that’s a good one – me with a hangover. How was your nap, Hrolf? She isn’t Ragnar’s, she’s Canute’s. Or, whatever that strange little princeling of his is named. Ragnar just gave her a go around to make sure everything worked right. Isn’t that right, Leta?” “No! I’mmf mrf!” “See? She said yes.” “What? No she didn’t, you horse’s ass. She said-” “What the frozen hell does it matter? She’s a slave, Hrolf!” At some point, the other two had apparently heard the commotion. “Hrolf? Vorix? I hope we’re not interrupting a lover’s quarrel.” Tyr laughed loud at his own joke. “No you broad-nosed fool,” Vorix said, eyes flaring. “I was sampling the wares that Ragnar dredged up, and Hrolf decided to come chastise me about it. For some reason, he thinks I’m interested.” As he spoke, Vorix began to curl his fingertips on my soft, naked belly skin. “Now, if you’ll all shove off, I can get on with it.” He shrugged in his easy, carefree way. “And then you can have a go, I suppose. Who’s to stop you?” “Well, Ragnar, for one. He’s not going to be happy.” I was, by then, far too caught up in what seemed inevitable. The lean, clean-faced Viking between my legs pushed his hips against me. The tip of his cock threatened to dip inside, and I have to admit even with the fear, the terror that hung in the back of my mind, the way he touched me made my toes curl. “See how she’s acting? You think she doesn’t want this? Ever since Ragnar broke her, she’s insatiable!” Vorix said. “Go on, get out. Or don’t. What do I care?” The hand on my belly stroked all the way up to my neck, his thumb ran along my jaw and then he leaned to kiss me. His lips were suitably rough and his kiss hard and desperate, but behind all of his movements and his affections was a gentleness that surprised me. His weight against my hips made me feel secure, somehow, even though I was well aware of his intentions, and of the other three men that just stood around behind us, as though there was nothing better to do.
