A small child awakes to find blackened leaves falling from her bedroom ceiling, threatening to quietly overwhelm her. 'Sometimes you wake up with nothing to look forward to ...' As she wanders around a world that is complex, puzzling and alienating, she is overtaken by a myriad of feelings. Just as it seems all hope is lost, the girl returns to her bedroom to find that a tiny red seedling has grown to fill the room with warm light. Astonishing Perth artist, Shaun Tan's latest creation, THE RED TREE, is a book about feelings - feelings that can not always be simply expressed in words. It is a series of imaginary landscapes conjured up by the wizardry of Shaun Tan's masterful and miraculous art. As a kind of fable, THE RED TREE seeks to remind us that, though some bad feelings are inevitable, they are always tempered by hope.

"The most important and challenging book on Arthurian and Grail tradition for many a long year." - Gareth Knight. The relationship between human and Faery lies at the very core of the Arthurian stories. In this radical re-evaluation of the Grail legends, Wendy Berg brings the ancient mythology of the British Isles into sharp focus centred around the marriage of King Arthur to the Faery Gwenevere and the origin and destiny of the Grail Hallows. Drawing upon numerous Arthurian sources and other related texts from the Book of Genesis to The Lord of the Rings, she explores the magical ritual underpinning of the legends and their connection to the ancient stellar deities of Britain. "When these stories are read with the additional level of understanding that they are for the most part a record of the lives and relationships of Faeries and humans working together about the Round Table, they immediately become not only a great deal more interesting, but also acquire a new and vivid relevance for the present day."

Abstract Although herbivores rely on liver enzymes to biotransform plant secondary metabolites ingested in plant-based diets, only a few enzymes from a handful of species have been characterized at the genomic level. In this study, we examined cytochrome P450 2B (CYP2B) sequence diversity and gene copy number in a conifer specialist, the red tree vole (Arborimus longicaudus). We fed captive individuals exclusively Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) foliage, cloned and sequenced their liver CYP2B cDNA, and estimated CYP2B gene copy number. We identified 21 unique CYP2B nucleotide sequences, and 20 unique CYP2B amino acid sequences. Gene copy number of CYP2B was estimated at 7.7 copies per haploid genome. We compared red tree vole CYP2B with CYP2B sequences of a generalist, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster), found in GenBank. Our study revealed that the CYP2B enzymes of red tree voles possess unique sequences compared to CYP2B enzymes of other herbivorous species. The unique combination of amino acid residues at key substrate recognition sites of CYP2B enzymes may underlie the ability of the red tree vole to specialize on a highly toxic diet of Douglas-fir.

The Popol Vuh is the most important example of Maya literature to have survived the Spanish conquest. It is also one of the world’s great creation accounts, comparable to the beauty and power of Genesis. Most previous translations have relied on Spanish versions rather than the original K’iche’-Maya text. Based on ten years of research by a leading scholar of Maya literature, this translation with extensive notes is uniquely faithful to the original language. Retaining the poetic style of the original text, the translation is also remarkably accessible to English readers. Illustrated with more than eighty drawings, photographs, and maps, Allen J. Christenson’s authoritative version brings out the richness and elegance of this sublime work of literature, comparable to such epic masterpieces as the Ramayana and Mahabharata of India or the Iliad and Odyssey of Greece.

Red dirt. What can one say about red dirt? The small town of San Augustine, Texas, sits on a twenty-six-mile swath of red clay. Once this red dirt gets into your system it is difficult to leave it behind, and if you do there is a tendency to return in your golden years. The town was organized in 1834 and was the gateway to early settlers after crossing the Sabine River into Texas. Most everyone who entered Texas in the early years passed through the town on the El Camino Real, the King’s Highway. Many settled here while others made their way to San Antonio. It was into this area of Texas that I was born and reared. This book contains 110 short stories of my experiences while growing up during the 1940s and 1950s in the town of red dirt. I have included stories of my married life as we lived in several different states through the years. A few stories of humorous events while working in law enforcement are also included. San Augustine, Texas, claims on good authority to be the oldest Anglo-Saxon town in Texas. The neighboring city of Nacogdoches is said to be the oldest town having had an Indian settlement there earlier than 1834. The debate will probably never be settled to everyone’s satisfaction.

Dendrogeomorphology Beginnings and Futures: A Personal Reminiscence My early forays into dendrogeomorphology occurred long before I even knew what that word meant. I was working as a young geoscientist in the 1960s and early 1970s on a problem with slope movements and deformed vegetation. At the same time, unknown to me, Jouko Alestalo in Finland was doing something similar. Both of us had seen that trees which produced annual growth rings were reacting to g- morphic processes resulting in changes in their internal and external growth p- terns. Dendroclimatology was an already well established field, but the reactions of trees to other environmental processes were far less well understood in the 1960s. It was Alestalo (1971) who first used the term, dendrogeomorphology. In the early 1970s, I could see that active slope-movement processes were affecting the growth of trees in diverse ways at certain localities. I wanted to learn more about those processes and try to extract a long-term chronology of movement from the highly diverse ring patterns.

But when Gabilan falls ill, Jody discovers there are still lessons he must learn about the ways of nature and, particularly, the ways of man.
