Overthrowing communism in 1989 and joining the European Union in 2004, the Polish people hold loyalties to region, country and now continent – even as the definition of what it means to be ‘European’ remains unclear. Paying particular attention to those who came of age in the earliest years of the neoliberal and democratic transformations, this book uses the life-story narratives of rural and urban southern Poles to reveal how ‘being European’ is considered a fundamental component of ‘being Polish’ while participants are simultaneously ‘becoming European’. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how the EU is regarded as both an idea and an instrument, and how ordinary citizens make choices that influence the shape of European identity and the legitimacy of its institutions.

As everyone is aware nobody leaves and departs from a good life. On the surface her main character had a great career, house, family, children, husband But that was the tip of the iceberg. The underlying reason for her departure from the former Soviet Union was deep down and deeply hidden from the eyes of the bystanders. In her book she tried to capture the most significant events which led the country to the collapse and made an impact of the destinies of the citizens of that country greatly Being a sensitive author, she wants to say in her book, "My freedom is finishing when your freedom ends". As a matter of fact, in the former USSR the notions "will" and "freedom" were not separated. The authorities did everything what they wanted to do in spite of the fact that they hurt constantly Soviet people the people of values and dignity. The main purpose of this book is that very fact that the author intended to introduce relatively newly arrived Russian-speaking community to the American Society. The United States, long considered to have the best higher education in the world, now ranks eleventh in the proportion of 25- to 34-year-olds with a college degree. As other countries have made dramatic gains in degree attainment, the U.S. has improved more slowly. In response, President Obama recently laid out a national "completion agenda" with the goal of making the U.S. the best-educated nation in the world by the year 2020. Getting to Graduation explores the reforms that we must pursue to recover a position of international leadership in higher education as well as the obstacles to those reforms. This new completion agenda puts increased pressure on institutions to promote student success and improve institutional productivity in a time of declining public revenue. In this volume, scholars of higher education and public policymakers describe promising directions for reform. They argue that it is essential to redefine postsecondary education and to consider a broader range of learning opportunities—beyond the research university and traditional bachelor degree programs—to include community colleges, occupational certificate programs, and apprenticeships. The authors also emphasize the need to rethink policies governing financial aid, remediation, and institutional funding to promote degree completion.
