Quit Stalling and Losing Steam with This Personal Health Guide Have you suffered from lethargy every time you try to cultivate a healthy habit? Do you start out strong with new diets, but ultimately return to your old habits within weeks or months? Are you frustrated by your lack of forward momentum? Are you tired of starting full on but then ultimately fizzling out? Then you need the help of Jonathan Cairns, author of The Plant Based Runner: A Personal Guide to Running, Healthy Eating, and Discovering a New You. This book isn't like any other running manual you've read. It's a hard-hitting, no-nonsense but compassionate look at how to finally break through to a healthier version of yourself and cultivate a diet that makes you look and feel better long-term. Woven from Cairns' personal story, the guide explores how to get from a path of subtle destruction to a path of health and wellness. It shows you how to take your first steps, and how to keep moving forward. It offers tips on how to become a better you, mentally and physically. Specifically, this book will teach you: Where motivation comes from and how you can get more of it The power of habit and how you can build ones that actually stick How gratitude plays into your daily routines The best place to start (it isn't where you think!) How to get your head in the game for real How to resolve the cognitive dissonance that comes with making real change Which recipes will help you feel healthy and well every hour of the day What runs Cairns has completed, and what you can learn from each The best resources and training plans to turn when in doubt Why it's so important that you make meaningful change now At the end of the day, Cairns simply used running as his favorite tool to fitness and made a conscious decision to eat only what made him feel well - following rules that apply to almost any human. He sticks by the principle that food is either healing or harming us, and we need a guide to make better decisions, which is why all his recipes and running plans are enclosed. Everything is tried and tested by Cairns, from the simplest breakfast to the most elaborate post-workout meal. If you're tired of breaking down, stalling out and losing steam, it's time to make a better decision. It's time to implement simple changes that add up to incredible results. You deserve it. Why a Plant Based Diet is Best for Runners (and Everyone Else for That Matter!)In 1977 Jim Fixx published his book entitled The Complete Book of Running, which sold over a million copies and was instrumental in the launch of the American running boom of the late 1970's. Fixx himself became a fitness icon, and his name became synonymous with the ideal picture of health. It is for this reason that his death at the age of 52 shocked the running world. On July 20th, 1984, Jim Fixx was found on the side of the road dead after suffering a massive heart attack during his morning run on a rural road in Vermont. Fixx had a family predisposition to heart disease--his father died at the age of 43 from a heart attack. During his autopsy it was determined that Fixx had major blockages in three of his arteries, the worst of which was 95% clogged. Despite knowing that he had a hereditary risk, Fixx felt that his compulsive running regime would keep him immune to health issues. Fixx never addressed the issue of diet, and despite having high cholesterol and a bad family history was a devoted meat eater until his premature death. We are just starting to understand the causal link between eating a meat based diet and illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Exercise alone is not a wellness guarantee, but running and eating a plant based diet will arguably get you to the highest point of personal health you might ever hope to achieve. This book is divided into two sections. The first section will outline the argument for why a plant based diet is preferable to a meat based diet for general health. The second section will explore areas of interest for the plant based runner, including: Debunking the Plant Diet Myths, Plant Based Sources of Carbohydrates, Proteins & Fats, Plant Based Smoothies Suggestions, Plant Based Meal Suggestions for Training and RecoveryAnd More! “In pursuing the mental side of endurance, Jurek uncovers the most important secrets any runner can learn.”—Amby Burfoot, author of The Runner’s Guide to the Meaning of Life For nearly two decades, Scott Jurek has been a dominant force—and darling—in the grueling and growing sport of ultrarunning. Until recently he held the American 24-hour record and he was one of the elite runners profiled in the runaway bestseller Born to Run. In Eat and Run, Jurek opens up about his life and career as a champion athlete with a plant-based diet and inspires runners at every level. From his Midwestern childhood hunting, fishing, and cooking for his meat-and-potatoes family to his slow transition to ultrarunning and veganism, Scott’s story shows the power of an iron will and blows apart the stereotypes of what athletes should eat to fuel optimal performance. Full of stories of competition as well as science and practical advice—including his own recipes—Eat and Run will motivate readers and expand their food horizons. “Jurek’s story and ideas should easily manage to speak to and cheer on anyone seeking to live life as fully as possible.”—Denver Post “A shockingly honest, revealing, and inspiring memoir.”—Trail Runner

The question What should I eat? troubles all of us on a daily basis, but it's perhaps most vexing for runners, who rely on food to fuel their workouts and feel good. Most runners take in calories and nutrients in the form of energy bars, nutrient-enhanced drinks, and fortified packaged foods. The problem is, "real" foods--fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats--are better for you than fortified products. That's because there's more to a carrot or a sweet potato than just vitamin A. Within the body, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients work together with thousands of other compounds, such as color components in fruits and vegetables, special starches and fibers in whole grains, and unique fats in seeds, nuts, and dairy. It's the whole package that promotes good health and peak athletic performance. Getting all of the nutrients every runner needs daily--and more--from real food it's easy. Runner's World Essential Guides: Fast Fuel shows you exactly how. The foremost authorities on running have collected the best information, tips, and advice about eating on the run. This indispensable guide contains everything you need to know about eating right to feel better, run stronger, and recover faster.
