This text, edited with notes by Sir Geoffrey Keynes, was first published in 1957 to mark the bicentenary of Blake's birth. It is now reprinted in an improved form with corrections, and with additions derived from further readings of deleted words and passages introduced without change of line or page numbering. This text contains almost all Blake's substantive variants. A small amount of new material is added in a supplement, including some notes in Blake's hand (c. 1819) recently found in a sketchbook used by John Varley. -- From publisher's description.

One of Jerry’s greatest talents was creating research pretexts to travel to the far corners of the globe. He explored England and continental Europe, first as a student and later when he returned regularly for research. Once he had settled into his career at the University of Toronto, Jerry sought adventure with his young family while teaching for a year in places which did not at the time attract many Western academics - Algeria in the 1960s, India in the 1970s, China in the early 1980s. In each of these places he found expectations about teaching, university administration and social interactions vastly different, often baffling, and always entertaining. The volume concludes with three essays in which Jerry chronicles his academic endeavours, as a scholar of William Blake, forms the basis of the most important collection of Blake works in Canada. With eloquence and humour, Jerry brings to life in Boondoggles the people he met and the grandeur of the places he visited, as both a restless professor and an endlessly curious observer of human nature, long before the era of mass tourism made such travels commonplace.

Blake is undoubtedly one of the greatest lyricists in English poetry, yet his work is often complex and obscure. Many readers will be unfamiliar with the various political, social, religious, artistic, academic and literary issues that dominated Blake?s time. Alongside his involvement in radical politics Blake was fascinated by popular unscientific conjecture about the history of the British people after the Flood. Influenced by contemporary issues and long-forgotten fads, was often infused with an anger that was the product of personal arguments. Consequently, the style of Blake's narrative verse is not always easy to appreciate. This, the second edition of the acclaimed Blake: The Complete Poems, remains unrivalled for the basic and detailed information it provides for interpreting the poems. The text is clear with a minimum of the 'turned' lines that make Blake's narratives so awkward to read. This new edition will be illustrated in full colour with some of Blake?s visionary paintings and designs, in order to highlight to readers the full breadth of Blake?s genius. The inclusion of these plates sets this volume apart from all other editions.

The writings of William Blake were not understood by his contemporaries or the Victorians, and it was only in 1910, with the publication of Joseph Wicksteed's Blake's Vision of the Book of Job, that the long process of comprehending Blake's works seriously began. Part 1 of the present work consists of twelve chapters that are primarily intended to lead the reader who has little or no acquaintance with Blake's more difficult works through all his books. These consist of Poetical Sketches, Songs of Innocence and of Experience, three early prose tractates, the eleven shorter prophetic books (including The Marriage of Heaven and Hell), the lyrics of the Pickering Manuscript, The Four Zoas, Milton, Jerusalem, The Gates of Paradise, The Ghost of Abel and Illustrations of The Book of Job. The reader who wishes to explore a work more fully can proceed to Part II, where a headnote outlines the main scholarly views of its structure and meaning. There are two indexes providing ready access to explanations of terms and proper names.
