“The Phoenix and the Carpet” is a 1904 fantasy children's novel by E. Nesbit. The second in a trilogy of novels beginning with “Five Children and It” (1902), it follows the escapades of the same five children: Anthea, Cyril, Robert, Jane and the “Lamb”. In this story, the children receive a new carpet from their mother to replace one destroyed in a fire. The children discover an egg inside it, which eventually hatches into a wish-granting phoenix that enables the children to go on many fantastical adventures. Edith Nesbit (1858 – 1924) was an English poet and author. She is perhaps best remembered for her children's literature, publishing more than 60 such books under the name E. Nesbit. She was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, which had a significant influence on the Labour Party and British politics in general. Other notable works by this author include: “The Prophet's Mantle” (1885), “Something Wrong” (1886), and “The Marden Mystery” (1896). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

The novel is famous in the German-speaking world, having been in print in both German and English for over 100 years and sold over 3 million copies, becoming an erotic bestseller. Today, critics, scholars, academics and the Austrian Government designate Salten, author of the book Bambi, A Life in the Woods (which Walt Disney purchased in 1942 and made into the world famous animated cartoon Bambi) as the sole author of the "pornographic classic," Josephine Mutzenbacher. The novel has been translated into English, French, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, Dutch, Japanese and Swedish, and been the subject of numerous films, theater productions, parodies, and university courses, as well as two sequels. The plot device employed in Josephine Mutzenbacher is that of first-person narrative, structured in the format of a memoir. In the Enduring Flame trilogy, Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory have given readers a new view of the complex and fascinating world they originally created for the Obsidian Trilogy. Jumping one thousand years in time, Lackey and Mallory have told the compelling story of Harrier Gillain, the first Knight-Mage in a thousand years; Tiercel Rolfort, the first High Mage in hundreds of years; and Shaiara, the young leader of a desert tribe who takes both boys under her wing but has a special affection for Harrier. These three young people are their world's main defense against the evil called up by the rogue Wild Mage, Bisochim. Bisochim's conviction that he was restoring the balance was shattered the moment Ahairan took her first breath. Now, in The Phoenix Transformed, Bisochim joins forces with Harrier and Tiercel, and the three mages search desperately for a way to destroy Ahairan as she sends her magical forces against them and the desert nomads under their protection. With more than one twist in the telling, centering on a magic-plagued journey across a blistering desert, The Phoenix Transformed is the stunning conclusion to The Enduring Flame.
