This wide-ranging collection of essays provides the reader with a critical introduction to the New Testament as the church's canon. The authors' conviction is that the Bible belongs first of all to the community of believers rather than to the guild of biblical scholars. But that does not make the tools and tasks of modern biblical criticism unimportant. Rather, they are the constructive means by which the scholar discerns the nature of the ongoing conversation between the church and its biblical canon and helps form the church into a community of worship and witness. Whether from a particular composition's point of origin, or from the various properties added to it during the canonizing process, or from its location within the final canonical product, the scholars recover multiple clues from the ancient church's dialogue with its scriptures that help delimit the boundaries and establish the aims of the same dialogue between today's faith community and its biblical canon.

The late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have been a period of mass production and proliferation of Jewish ideas, and have witnessed major changes in Jewish life and stimulated major debates. The New Jewish Canon offers a conceptual roadmap to make sense of such rapid change. With over eighty excerpts from key primary source texts and insightful corresponding essays by leading scholars, on topics of history and memory, Jewish politics and the public square, religion and religiosity, and identities and communities, The New Jewish Canon promises to start conversations from the seminar room to the dinner table. The New Jewish Canon is both text and textbook of the Jewish intellectual and communal zeitgeist for the contemporary period and the recent past, canonizing our most important ideas and debates of the past two generations; and just as importantly, stimulating debate and scholarship about what is yet to come.

Completing his New Testament trilogy, eminent theologian Bruce Metzger provides information from Church history concerning the recognition of the canonical status of the several books of the New Testament. Canonization was a long and gradual process of sifting through scores of gospels, epistles, and other books that enjoyed local and temporary authority--some of which have only recently come to light. Metzger discusses the external pressures that led to the fixing of the limits of the canon as well as Patristic evidence that bears on the development of the canon, not only in the West, but also among the Eastern churches. He also considers differences as to the sequence of the books in the New Testament.

The New Canon: An Anthology of Canadian Poetry offers readers a reliable, if often risk-taking, guide to the last two decades of contemporary Canadian poetry. In the first book to survey the territory since Dennis Lee's landmark The New Canadian Poets was published in 1985, critic and poet Carmine Starnino has collected fifty of the most interesting Canadian poets born between 1955 and 1975, many of whom have never made an appearance in a major anthology. Selected from the lists of more than twenty presses, and serving up nearly two hundred poems, this indispensable volume attempts to identify an emerging openness towards form in Canadian poetry. Concentrating on poets who have launched innovative attacks on traditional verse modes, The New Canon will do much to challenge prevailing insularities and tastes. Also included is a long essay by Starnino that describes and explains the innovative tendencies of this exciting group. Among the writers represented are Richard Sanger, Julie Bruck, David McGimpsey, Jeffery Donaldson, Bruce Taylor, Diana Brebner, Laura Lush, Christopher Patton, George Elliott Clarke, Stephanie Bolster, Steven Heighton, Sue Sinclair, Ken Babstock, Elise Partridge, David Manicom, David O'Meara, Karen Solie, Barbara Nickel, and Joe Denham.
