The Pentateuch, also known to Christians and Jews as the "Law" ("Torah" in Hebrew), is the name given to the first five books of the Bible. Like the other volumes in the standard edition of the Navarre Bible, prepared by Navarre University's theology faculty, this volume contains the full biblical text in the Revised Standard Version and the New Vulgate together with extensive commentaries. The commentaries, or notes, help to explain the doctrinal and practical meaning of the scriptural text, drawing on a rich variety of sources, Church documents, the exegesis of Fathers and Doctors, and the works of prominent spiritual writers, particularly Blessed J. Escriva, who initiated the Navarre Bible project.

"Whereas the first five books of the Old Testament - the Pentateuch - record the Law of Moses in the form of commandments, the Wisdom Books propound that teaching in the form of counsels and proverbs. They also reveal the close connexion between knowledge that comes through faith, and knowledge acquired through human reasoning." "The book of Job takes the form of a narrative - the story of an upright man who experiences misfortune after misfortune; to a degree, it lifts the veil that shrouds the mystery of suffering. The book of Ecclesiastes ("All is vanity" ...) helps the believer to appreciate the value of things heavenly. Proverbs consists of seven collections of wise sayings from the ancient East. The Wisdom of Solomon, which probably originated in the Jewish community of Alexandria (Egypt), interfaces with the world of Greek culture. Sirach, written by someone steeped in the wisdom tradition of Israel, was much used by the early Fathers of the Church." "Like the other volumes in the Standard Edition of the Navarre Bible, this book contains the full biblical text in the Revised Standard Version and the New Vulgate together with extensive commentaries. The commentaries, which help to explain the doctrinal and practical meaning of the scriptural text, draw on a rich variety of sources - church documents, the exegesis of the Fathers and the Doctors, and the works of prominent spiritual writers, particularly St. Josemaria Escriva, who initiated the Navarre Bible project."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Books of the Old Testament translated from the Navarre (Spanish) Bible - Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings. This volume, which follows the pattern of the highly successful Navarre Bible New Testament (1985-1992), consists of the Revised Standard Version and the New Vulgate with a Commentary by members of the Faculty of the University of Navarre, Spain. The main feature of The Navarre Bible is the notes and introductions provided by the editors; these notes, which are rarely very technical, are designed to elucidate the spiritual and theological message of the Bible. This first edition of the Old Testament series was Navarre Bible: Pentateuch standard edition (1999) which also carries the Western Church's official Latin version of the Bible, the editio tipica altera of the New Vulgate (1986).

The book of Exodus contains the stories that have entertained people for many decades at the movies and on television, yet few people realize that the central event of the entire Old Testament is found in the book of Exodus: God's revelation as savior of his people. Exodus: God to the Rescue is an excellent Bible study for groups who want to take a closer look at this primary theme that eventually reaches its fulfillment in Jesus of Nazareth. For busy adults who want to study the Bible but don't know where to begin, Six Weeks with the Bible provides an inviting starting point. Each guide is divided into six concise, 90-minute segments that introduce one book of the Bible. All biblical text is printed in the guides, which means no additional study aids are required.
