The poetry of Rumi is in two parts. The first part is his ecstatic and fiery love poetry. It is a passionate description of the state of awareness he reached after integrating the lessons he and Shams discovered and shared during their time together. This work, which Rumi referred to as the collection of Shams Tabrizi, is a group of poems which give flight to the human spirit in their beautiful and reassuring messages of hope. Many selections from this extensive collection have been translated in to English and are widely available. This first group of his poetry marked a new awareness of spirit for Rumi. Previous to his meeting with Shams in 1244, Rumi was not in this zone of happy and joyful awareness, but more of a stodgy academic whose spirituality was in form, and not proceeding from an inner awareness. Probably, many of Rumi's followers were curious about the transformation that Rumi achieved. What did he learn from Shams? What did they talk about? What were his realizations? What was it like for him to make this shift in awareness? Questions like these may have prompted him to explain the insights he came to realize, and how these new understandings affected him.The changes of awareness he experienced are described in the second part of his poetic work, the six books of the Mathnaw. The process of his transformation is described in many ways, on many levels. The stories he offers present different sets of characters, sometimes human, sometimes animal, but these various players are representative of the inner qualities found inside all human beings. The difficulties of surviving the demands of life, and the yearning to transcend these mundane demands are the topics which Rumi explores, sharing with the reader the understandings he achieved in his own spiritual quest. The basis of Rumi's approach to awareness is found in line 34 of the first book of the Mathnaw, his guide-book for those seeking to learn the means of his transformational process. "Do you know why the mirror of your soul reflects nothing? Because the rust is not cleared from its face." Removing the rust from the heart is, in Sufi terminology, the clearing away of barriers which prevent one from achieving an all-encompassing clear vision. Every-day events swirl around us distracting us from the perceptions which are otherwise available to our awareness. When the mirror of the heart is clear, a true image of life is reflected to the mind, and the mind can participate in the glory of an amazing world of living beings, animate and inanimate, offering their messages of love and joy. When the two wings of the heart and mind are unfolded and work together in unison, the spirit can fly free.Rumi's Mathnaw was translated into English in the early 1900's by Reynold Nicholson. His magnificent translation is now available in an updated version, far more readable while maintaining the accuracy and dignity of Nicholson's original work. Books one and two are available from Amazon, Book 1 ISBN 978-1500539795, Book 2 ISBN 978-1533505651. Book 3 ISBN 978-1536877526. Books 4 and 5 later in 2016. MawlanaJalal al-Din Rumi's poem, the Mathnawi, is one of the best known and most influential works of Muslim mysticism. Its author was born in 1207 at Balkh in Central Asia but, as a child accompanied his father and family to settle in Qonya in Anatolia. After he had followed his father as a preacher, Rumi's mystical bent became more pronounced, particularly after the beginnning of his relationship with the dervish Shams al-Dn of Tabriz which led to non-conformist behaviour and an outpouring of lyric poetry. Rumi had his own circle of followers, the origin of the Mevlevi sufi order, whose whirling dance is said to be inspired by their Shaikh's own ecstasies.

'Your soul each moment struggles hard with death - Think of your faith as though it's your last breath. Your life is like a purse, and night and day Are counters of gold coins you've put away' Rumi is the greatest mystic poet to have written in Persian, and the Masnavi is his masterpiece. Divided into six books and consisting of some 26,000 verses, the poem was designed to convey a message of divine love and unity to the disciples of Rumi's Sufi order, known today as the Whirling Dervishes. Like the earlier books, Book Three interweaves amusing stories with homilies to instruct pupils in mystical knowledge. It has a special focus on epistemology, illustrated with narratives that involve the consumption of food. This is the first ever verse translation of Book Three of the Masnavi. It follows the original by presenting Rumi's most mature mystical teachings in simple and attractive rhyming couplets.

Rumi is perhaps the only example in world literature of a devoted prose writer who suddenly burst forth into poetry during middle age to become a truly great mystical poet for all time. This book, a long-overdue reckoning of his life and work, begins with a description and examination of the living conditions in 13th-century Persia. Building on this context, Afzal Iqbal proceeds to fully analyze the formative period of Rumi's life leading up to 1261--when he began the monumental work of writing the Mathnawi. Toward the end of the book, Iqbal more generally investigates Rumi's thought and includes translations of those portions of the Mathnawi that have been hitherto unavailable in English. Combining an unparalleled familiarity with the source material, a total and critical understanding of the subject, and a powerful and readable prose style, this is an extraordinary study of a truly remarkable poet and mystic.

Would you commiserate with a sufferer and share his sorrow?” Sufism is a long journey through which the wayfarer, the salik in Sufi terminology, passes seven stages of the soul under the guidance of his master, murshid. In Sufi parables, this process is associated with a voyage to which the sailors begin reciting God’s name. The navigation in this work, however, is the one of a boat belongs to the wayfarer who sail to the spiritual waters, towards God, towards Oneness with the Universe. Through God is the route. To feel Him is the gift, the destination is spirit or the inner man inside the wayfarer. Indeed, the whole voyage is a story of self-realization This process is strictly adhered to a special form of education, “the education of love”. Here, the dervish is the one who comprehends the inattention he is in and contemplates this journey whose every stop with one beautiful name of God contains the metamorphoses within the spirit. This intuition acquired via this indispensable guidance within the scope of Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad is precious because of the fact that the twenty-first century man suffers without being aware of what underlying factors reside on the grounds of his woe. Since therefore, such souls become anxious, nervous and burden both themselves and the society they live in. A Dervish’s Logbook is a book of dialog between the guide and the aspiring disciple in the directions of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi’s Masnavi and the teachings of other masters. “My son, the wounded gazelles club here is. If you ask for participation, knock the door.”
