The most famous of all British racing motorcycles, with an ancestry dating back to the very dawn of the internal combustion engine, the 'cammy' Norton is inseparable from the era of British domination in motorcycle racing. It is linked with the legendary heroes of the sport, Jimmie Guthrie, Harold Daniell, Geoff Duke, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood and the age when Britain had the world's finest motorcycle industry. This revised edition of the definitive history contains additional material and traces the design, development, the leading riders and tuners. It presents a superb collection of photographs, many previously unpublished. The Manx Norton covers not only the Manx itself, but also features boardroom battles, Norton's early history, record breaking, sidecars, Formula 3 cars, scrambling (motocross); the Domiracer; racing at Daytona and today's classic scene.

There can be no question as to the status of the Manx Norton. It is the world's firm favourite for the accolade of ' the greatest road racing motorcycle'. Even after nearly 20 years of Japanese domination, and Italian and German horsepower before that, it still stands head and shoulders above the rest. It has that charisma found only rarely in any machinery; it ranks perhaps alongside the Leica camera and Morgan sports car. Surprisingly, this is the first book which details the machine's development through the 'works' bikes to the production, customer versions. Nowhere else is it possible to trace each year's specific modifications. We have, therefore, essential reading for each and every enthusiast who has ever heard of the revered Manx. Just as important, however, is the development story of all the other Norton singles which were current with the Manx, with or without overhead camshafts. Again we have first-rime coverage of the Inter, the ohc Manx sister, and all the step-sister push-rod machines: models 18, 19, ES2, 50,16H, Big 4 and 500T in their various guise. If it had Norton on the tank and but one barrel and piston, it's in this book. Nothing is overlooked, from TT racing to wartime mud plugging, from detailed tank lining changes to carburettor fitment. Never before has such a wealth of information been offered on Britain's best-loved motorcycles.

Excerpt: Norton is a British motorcycle marque, originally from Birmingham, founded in 1898 as a manufacturer of "fittings and parts for the two-wheel trade." By 1902, they had begun manufacturing motorcycles with bought-in engines. In 1908, a Norton-built engine was added to the range. This began a long series of production of single and eventually twin-cylinder motorcycles, and a long history of racing involvement. Wartime WW2 production of the military Model 16 H and Big 4 sidevalve motorcycles was Nortons contribution to the war effort, almost 100,000 being manufactured. When major shareholders started to leave Norton in 1953, the company declined and Associated Motor Cycles bought the shares. Although motorcycle sales went through a recession in the 1950s, and Norton Motors Ltd was only a small manufacturer, Norton sales flourished. A series of Norton Dominator Twins of 500cc, then 600cc, then 650cc and then the 750cc Norton Atlas kept sales buoyant, especially with sales to the USA. In 1968, the new 750cc Norton Commando Model appeared, with the engine/gearbox/swingarm unit "isolastically" insulated from the frame with a series of rubber mountings. This kept the vibrations from the rider, giving a smooth comfortable ride. The Commando was a best seller, and voted #1 Motorcycle of the Year a number of times in Britain. 850cc Models appeared for 1973, giving more torque. And for 1975 an electric...

American road racing began just after World War II and quickly blossomed into a movement. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the United States Auto Club (USAC), clubs that became fierce rivals in the 1950s and 1960s, were the principal race promoters. Race tracks popped up everywhere, at first on city streets, then at airports and U.S. Air Force bases, and finally at purpose-built circuits like Road America and Laguna Seca.Although most of the cars that competed in American road racing were built in Europe, an underground movement sprang up of "special builders" who constructed their racers in home garages and small-town machine shops. Some were so homely and slow that only the builders could love them. Others trounced every Ferrari in sight and are now on the wish lists of wealthy collectors the world over.Vintage American Road Racing Cars 1950-1970 is the first book devoted exclusively to American road racing cars of all types and sizes. Hundreds of race cars built in America have never before been mentioned in print, and this book chronicles those and other cars with vintage and modern photography, specifications, memorabilia, and the stories and characters behind each car.About the AuthorHarold Pace's writing and photography has appeared in such magazines as Automobile Quarterly, Class & Sportscar, Excellence, Sports Car International, Vintage Racecar Journal, and others. He lives in Weatherford, Texas. Mark Brinker is a vintage race car enthusiast who has raced at the Monterey Historics. He is a doctor with three published medical textbooks and 70+ published scientific papers. He hails from Houston, Texas.
