A collection of essays on Adivasis. Tribal groups (adivasis) in India have often been excluded, marginalized and oppressed by `mainstream society. In many ways this exclusion, marginalization and oppression is fostered by the way in which `mainstream society looks at the adivasis as exotic, dangerous, or `primitive others. Devy s book looks at the problems of adivasis, the threat to their physical environment, the terror and indignity of the stigma of being considered criminal tribes and their induction into the communal violence in Gujarat. But he also discusses the simple sophistication of Adivasi knowledge systems, language and literature, as also initiatives taken along with tribals in the areas of health, microfinance and preservation of cultural forms.

Based on original field research, these essays reject broad assumptions about sexual equality and inequality, maintaining, rather, that the relationship of the sexes to each other must be explored in terms of the conflicts, tensions, and paradoxes that are at the heart of daily life in many societies. Caribbean Autobiography

Author : Sandra Pouchet Paquet
ISBN : 0299176908
Genre : Biography & Autobiography
File Size : 73.15 MB
Format : PDF, Mobi
Download : 324
Read : 521

Despite the range and abundance of autobiographical writing from the Anglophone Caribbean, this book is the first to explore this literature fully. It covers works from the colonial era up to present-day AIDS memoirs and assesses the links between more familiar works by George Lamming, C. L. R. James, Derek Walcott, V. S. Naipaul, and Jamaica Kincaid and less frequently cited works by the Hart sisters, Mary Prince, Mary Seacole, Claude McKay, Yseult Bridges, Jean Rhys, Anna Mahase, and Kamau Brathwaite. Sandra Pouchet Paquet charts the intersection of multiple, contradictory viewpoints of the colonial and postcolonial Caribbean, differing concepts of community and levels of social integration, and a persistent pattern of both resistance and accommodation within island states that were largely shaped by British colonial practice from the mid-seventeenth through the mid-twentieth century. The texts examined here reflect the entire range of autobiographical practice, including the slave narrative and testimonial, written and oral narratives, spiritual autobiographies, fiction, serial autobiography, verse, diaries and journals, elegy, and parody.
