The Long And Winding Road

Author : Alan Johnson

Genre : Biography & Autobiography

Winner of the Parliamentary Book Award, best memoir by a Parliamentarian, 2016 From the condemned slums of Southam Street in West London to the corridors of power in Westminster, Alan Johnson’s multi-award-winning autobiography charts an extraordinary journey, almost unimaginable in today’s Britain. This third volume tells of Alan’s early political skirmishes as a trades union leader, where his negotiating skills and charismatic style soon came to the notice of Tony Blair and other senior members of the Labour Party. As a result, Alan was chosen to stand in the constituency of Hull West and Hessle, and entered Parliament as an MP after the landslide election victory for Labour in May 1997. But this is no self-aggrandizing memoir of Westminster politicking and skulduggery. Supporting the struggle of his constituents, the Hull trawlermen and their families, for justice comes more naturally to Alan than do the byzantine complexities of Parliamentary procedure. But of course he does succeed there, and rises through various ministerial positions to the office of Home Secretary in 2009. In The Long and Winding Road, Alan’s characteristic honesty and authenticity shine through every word. His book takes you into a world which is at once familiar and strange: this is politics as you’ve never seen it before...

In this essential third edition, Vappu Tyyskä examines the challenges faced by today's young people through a critical lens. Difficult questions related to such issues as employment, education, social pressure, identity, and crime are explored by Tyyskä as she paints a fascinating picture of modern youth in three countries: Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The author explores the negative stereotypes surrounding young people, and argues that it is time to contextualize our understanding of youth by addressing the underlying social, economic, and political issues they face. Each of the ten revised chapters begins with a list of key learning objectives and ends with discussion questions to aid in the learning process and stimulate critical thinking. This new edition incorporates updated statistics, comprehensive tables, and revised narratives in which the author explores topics pertinent to today's youth such as the influence of social media, eating disorders, and recent changes to the juvenile justice system.

According to biblical doctrine, God first created people in the universe with a hierarchy of holy angels, with the highest order being identified as "cherubim." One of them, who was anointed and perhaps the most elitist cherub amongst them, knew he was created beautiful and perfect in his ways. Alternately, with pride and arrogance at the forefront, that same being became the supreme architect and advocate for sin, evil and untold suffering. Henceforth, the diabolical Satan was loosed upon the world. Tragically, from time to time, beauty is in the fabled beast. Handsome man and beautiful women may be pleasing to the eyes and their good looks may even grant them unearned favor but their inner nature is a virtual mystery. They might be evil incarnated. Meanwhile, the not-so attractive individuals are oftentimes ignored and generally devalued, all dependent upon the beholder. But possibly, the inner core of that select person could render him or her almost angelic-like. Life's long and winding road is lined with so-called beautiful and so-called unattractive people. However, through faith and God's grace (and not the naked eye), the lonely traveler may be able to distinguish which is which. And that'll make life's journey worthwhile. All too often, a young man fathers a child and assumes that that, in itself, validates his manhood. Initially, as a new dad, he might even feel that all is right with the new world, and his future looms bright. In many cases, it's a heartfelt euphoria that defies description. However, when the novelty wears off and reality returns, a rather lengthy journey commences. To the mother's credit and merit, she usually accompanies her offspring on life's long and winding road but, far too frequently, the once proud father falters or completely vanishes along the way. Arguably so, it's serious and impactuous tragedy for the mother, the absentee father, the child and sometimes, the world at large. The good news is this, however, "One-size-fits-all" meager, gloomy or dire it might be, does not necessarily dictate their impending future. Through their own resilience, paired with a burning desire to overcome their childhood's deficiencies, they, alternately, walk a pathway less hazardous. And sometimes, when sincere loved ones step forward, it renders life's journey well worthwhile and almost superlative. And that's a road well worth embarking upon.

The first to die were the lucky ones--their world was still fairly normal when their time came. The collapse of society was horrendous--impoverished masses revolted, unpaid soldiers mutinied, and starving parents sold their children into slavery. Nuclear suns bloomed here and there, and a man-made winter gripped the world. Last came the sicknesses--many old, some new. Tens of millions died instantly while hundreds of millions wished they had. Mankind had put itself on the endangered species list with a vengeance. Yet life did go on. Scattered far and wide, the few survivors huddled in the ruins, ignorant of what was happening beyond the horizon. There were a few who chose to quench this thirst for knowledge, who attempted to fill the longing for luxuries barely remembered. They were called Traders. Kid, barely of drinking age in a world that no longer had laws; Par, his half-crazed partner in crime; Savonne, the young woman who came between them; and Mary, a little girl in a world that is no longer child safe. They brought stories of other places and tales of other survivors. And sometimes they brought hope...hope that things were getting better.
