No Jewish thinker of the middle half of this 20th century has left such an indelible mark upon his times as has Abraham Joshua Heschel. A distinguished professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York from 1945 until his death in 1972, Rabbi Heschel sought in both his writing and teaching to expose the depth and meaning of Judaism along with its relevance to our contemporary world, and in a special way to contemporary Christianity. Rabbi Heschel was also in the forefront of the great human concerns of his day. He dealt with the problems of the young and of the elderly at two White House Conferences; he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and lead protests against American policy in Vietnam, participating in numerous civil rights marches and peace rallies. He worked tirelessly for the betterment of Jewish-Christian relations and played a key role in the deliberations of Vatican II. The Human and the Holy provides a fascinating overview of the spirituality of Rabbi Heschel, underscoring its meaning for both Jew and Christian. For as Heschel's spirituality makes abundantly clear, Jews and Christians share much on a religious, personal, and social level, while shedding greater light on the roots and challenges of their own particular faith tradition.

The horrific 1915 earthquake that leveled tiny Manoppello, Italy, brought forth from the local church’s rubble one of Christendom’s long-lost, but most precious relics: the small cloth that lay on Jesus’s face in the tomb. Saint John speaks of it in his Gospel: “When Peter went into the tomb, he saw linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.” Tradition says that Our Lady herself laid this cloth on His face before He was wrapped in His shroud for burial. This small veil — now known as the Holy Face of Manoppello — absorbed the very first new breath of the Risen Christ . . . and at that same instant had imprinted on itself, miraculously, a vivid image of the now-resurrected Jesus. Modern scholars have confirmed that this image corresponds perfectly in all its measurements to the face of the dead Christ on the more famous Shroud of Turin. Unlike the Shroud, however, the Holy Face of Manoppello shows not the grim visage of a dead man with eyes closed, but the lively face of the living Christ, His eyes wide open, piercing us with their gaze. In 2006, Pope Benedict made a pilgrimage to Manoppello to pray before this image. In the decade since then, tens of thousands of other pilgrims have followed in the Pope’s footsteps, making the trek to central Italy to meet Jesus face-to-face. Now, thanks to author Paul Badde you can learn of the loss and recovery of this precious relic. Better yet, by means of the dozens of color pictures in this book, you, too, can encounter this miraculous cloth, and finally gaze reverently on the face of the living Christ Himself!

Through this thirteen-week, small-group Bible study, we’ll discuss Jesus and His example of how to live as human and holy—set apart to live a holy life, with human nature, but not according to sinful nature. There’s freedom in understanding the distinction between human nature and sinful nature—not a freedom to sin (Romans 6:1), but a freedom to be all that God calls us to be. Human and Holy is the first of many Iron Rose Sister Ministries Bible Studies. “What I loved about Human and Holy was that it wasn’t intimidating. I really connected with the conversational style of the studies.” —Christa Duve, young professional “Human and Holy gave me a fresh perspective that I never realized on verses I’ve read or studied in the past, as well as the opportunity to discuss topics that we sometimes avoid, but always face as women.” —Maryellen Anderson, working mother of two “Human and Holy serves to remind us all we are not alone in our humanness, nor in our pursuit of holiness. Indeed, we have one another and our Most High God to join us on the journey.” —Sherry Hubright, author, blogger, and nana “I appreciate that Human and Holy strengthens Christian women in all walks of life—a growth opportunity for seasoned leaders and novice students of the Word.” —Katie Forbess, former missionary to Bolivia and mother of three
