Shining new light on one of Britain's most celebrated figures, this new biography insightfully explores the beliefs underlying Shaftesbury's passion for the poor Drawing extensively from Lord Shaftesbury's private journals, this accessible biography shows not just the story of his life—from his happy marriage and many children to his acts of Parliament—but also how his faith led and equipped him to fight for justice in society. Lord Shaftesbury was one of the best loved politicians and social reformers of nineteenth century England. His deep compassion for the poor was legendary, as were his tireless campaigns to limit factory hours, stop the use of boys as chimney sweeps and children in coalmines, and to develop universal education. As a result he changed the character of English society forever. Revealing a moving portrait of a sensitive thinker, areas covered in this important biography include his upbringing and education; his work as a politician and his campaign for mental health; his contribution towards the founding of the Bible Society; his role as a defender of the Protestant faith; his personal theology; and much more.

Since his surprise appointment in March 2013, Pope Francis has emerged as the most talked-about and most revolutionary pope in living memory. He has become a subject of fascination, conversation, and headlines not only to the 1.2 billion Catholics in the world, but to virtually everyone. This biography of Pope Francis describes how this revolutionary thinker became who he is, and how he will use the power of his position to challenge and redirect one of the world's most formidable religions. Drawing on extensive interviews in Argentina and other countries and now featuring an updated epilogue, The Great Reformer traces the roots of his papacy in Francis's childhood in Buenos Aires, in his Jesuit training, and in the dramatic events during the Pern era and the military government in Argentina in the 1970s. It shows how these experiences have shaped his beliefs, and with his commitment to the discernment of God's will, enabled him to challenge and redirect the Church. Pope Francis was elected in the midst of one of the biggest crises in the Church in modern times. This is the story of a true radical who is transforming the Church by restoring what it has lost.

Excerpt: ... The life and times of John Calvin Paul Emil Henry PART II. CONTINUEd. LIFE AND TIMES OF CALVIN. PART II.--Continued. CHAPTER X. STATE OP THE CHURCH IN THE YEARS 1544 AND 1545. The beginning of a letter from Calvin to Bullinger contains a notice of the progress of the Gospel in France. He speaks of the descendants of the Waldenses in Provence and Piedmont: " Their piety and the innocence of their lives is such, that their salvation must be precious in the eyes of every believer. Three years ago they presented a copy of their confession to the parliament of Aix; it is pure and simple, and such a one as we ourselves should have delivered. Do not believe that it was a zeal, air in appearance, but soon to vanish. They have been again and again summoned before the tribuual; have endured the trial with unflinching firmness, and are still exposed to the most cruel persecutions. The king himself proposes to examine and judge their cause. Two commissaries have received command to inquire, both publicly and secretly, into their doctrine and manners. The brethren have no fear of these officers, for they have ever so conducted themselves, that even their enemies bear testimony to their integrity. Now bishops, prefects, and even the parliament, are strenuously laboring to hinder the fulfilment of the king's intentions; and if the old rule be followed, VOL. II.--1 they will rouse up all the lions and wolves they can to rage against them. But even if he be obeyed, they are not freed from danger. They have already introduced the pure worship of God into three cities, and into several villages, and have even established a church purified from all papistical corruption. In that church they celebrate baptism and the Lord's Suppe...
