This series of commentaries on the New English Bible is designed for use in schools and colleges, and for the minister and the layman. Each volume comments on one book, or a few short books, of the Bible, and in each the text is given in full. Sections of text and commentary alternate, so that the reader does not have to keep two books open, or turn from one part of the book to the other, or refer to a commentary in small type at the foot of the page. Great care has been taken to see that the commentary is suitable for the student and the layman: there is no Greek or Hebrew, and no strings of biblical references, but the commentary does convey the latest and best scholarship. The general editors all have experience of teaching or examining in school and working with adults.

10 lectures, Basel, September 15-26, 1909 (CW 114) Rudolf Steiner was born with clairvoyant capacities, but it was not until he was forty that he could connect his inner experiences with Jesus Christ. After that "solemn festival of knowledge," as he described it in his Autobiography, Steiner received ceaseless revelations about the significance of the Christ's incarnation. For the next twenty years, he spoke of the hidden background to all four gospels, the Book of Revelations, and even what he called the Fifth Gospel, read directly from the spirit worlds. These lectures present the most accessible and illuminating of Steiner's revelations about the significance of the Christ for the spiritual development of humanity. He discusses the link between the Buddha and the Christ, which unites Buddhism and Christianity--not in theory but in the spiritual activities of those two beings. Steiner also describes the relationship between the Greek Mystery traditions and the Mystery of Golgotha: "A sign was to be placed before them as well, a sign that would now be enacted before the eyes of all humankind. The 'mystical death, ' which had been a ceremonial act in the Mystery temples for hundreds and thousands of years, would now be presented on the great stage of world history. Everything that had taken place in the secrecy of initiation temples was brought into the open as a single event on Golgotha." Utilizing a historical overview, revealing the relationship between the great religious traditions, and how they have conspired together for the good of humanity, Steiner never loses sight of the Gospel's great inner meaning, as echoed in the Gospel of St. Luke: "The revelation of the spiritual worlds from the Heights and its answering reflection from human hearts brings peace to all whose purpose upon the evolving Earth is to develop good will." Seven Days with the Gospel of Luke provides for a retreat of seven days, offering suggestions for reflection and meditation. The retreat is based on the spiritual dynamics found in Luke's gospel. On this retreat we want to know Jesus as Luke came to know him, to see him as Luke did. Luke was a physician who saw not only the personal ills of the people who figure in his gospel, but also the spiritual ills of the time. He saw hope come into the world in the person of Jesus. Each meditation on Luke's gospel concludes with questions for reflection, as well as a suggested prayer and action response to help bring the reflection to life. Father Donder's book can also serve as a study guide for those who wish to delve more deeply into the gospel of Luke. May your seven days with the gospel of Luke draw you closer to Jesus. This new Pillar commentary devotes attention throughout to the vocabulary, historical background, special themes, and narrative purpose that make the book of Luke unique among the four Gospels. Though the Gentile focus of Luke is often held to be primary, James Edwards counterbalances that by citing numerous evidences of Luke's overarching interest in depicting Jesus as the fulfillment of the providential work of God in the history of Israel, and he considers the possibility that Luke himself was a Jew. Edwards also draws out other important thematic issues in excursuses scattered throughout the commentary, including discussion of Luke's infancy narrative, the mission of Jesus as the way of salvation, and Luke's depiction of the universal scope of the gospel. This readable, relevant commentary attends to the linguistic, historical, literary, and theological elements of Luke that are essential to its meaning and considers Luke's significance for the church and the life of faith today.

What makes this commentary on Luke stand apart from others is that, from beginning to end, this is a literary analysis. Because it focuses solely on the Gospel as it appears and not on its source or origin, this commentary richly and thoroughly explores just what Luke is saying and how he says it.

The Gospel of Luke, with its refined Greek, offers us a gospel of decision, of crossroads, that speaks to our times. Known as “A Gospel of Prayer” Luke is the one of the four Gospels whose theme is “sonship”: the Sonship of Jesus, of course, but also ours. This third Gospel is the transition between Matthew and Mark and the “spiritual Gospel” of John, the Beloved Disciple, which is traditionally placed as the culmination of the evangelical revelation. An initial approach to the Gospel of Luke can give an impression of disorder, as if it were a compilation of disconnected fragments. Many commentators have taken note of this aspect. However, Roland Meynet disagrees, pointing out that “it has been written in an orderly way”. We cannot forget that the New Testament was born in the Jewish world and that it is deeply etched by the writing techniques appropriate to that time. Having worked for more than 30 years in biblical and Semitic rhetoric, Meynet shows us the admirable and extremely precise composition of the Gospel of Luke. His commentary proposes unexpected interpretations in contrast with traditional readings. Meynet offers a “word by word”, step by step reading based on the latest achievements of modern linguistics, giving an interpretation of the text that manifests all its originality and strength.
