Donald R. McCreary and Joan C. Chrisler The Development of Gender Studies in Psychology Studies of sex differences are as old as the ?eld of psychology, and they have been conducted in every sub?eld of the discipline. There are probably many reasons for the popularity of these studies, but three reasons seem to be most prominent. First, social psychological studies of person perception show that sex is especially salient in social groups. It is the ?rst thing people notice about others, and it is one of the things we remember best (Fiske, Haslam, & Fiske, 1991; Stangor, Lynch, Duan, & Glass, 1992). For example, people may not remember who uttered a witty remark, but they are likely to remember whether the quip came from a woman or a man. Second, many people hold ?rm beliefs that aspects of physiology suit men and women for particular social roles. Men’s greater upper body strength makes them better candidates for manual labor, and their greater height gives the impression that they would make good leaders (i. e. , people we look up to). Women’s reproductive capacity and the caretaking tasks (e. g. , breastfeeding, baby minding) that accompany it make them seem suitable for other roles that require gentleness and nurturance. Third, the logic that underlies hypothesis testing in the sciences is focused on difference. Researchers design their studies with the hope that they can reject the null hypothesis that experimental groups do not differ.

What is a videogame? What makes a videogame "good"? If a game is supposed to be fun, can it be fun without a good story? If another is supposed to be an accurate simulation, does it still need to be entertaining? With the ever-expanding explosion of new videogames and new developments in the gaming world, questions about videogame criticism are becoming more complex. The differing definitions that players and critics use to decide what a game is and what makes a game successful, often lead to different ideas of how games succeed or fail. This collection of new essays puts on display the variety and ambiguity of videogames. Each essay is a work of game criticism that takes a different approach to defining the game and analyzing it. Through analysis and critical methods, these essays discuss whether a game is defined by its rules, its narrative, its technology, or by the activity of playing it, and the tensions between these definitions. With essays on Overwatch, Dark Souls 3, Far Cry 4, Farmville and more, this collection attempts to show the complex changes, challenges and advances to game criticism in the era of videogames.

In the player versus player MMORPG Fantasy Realms Online, people live out the fantasies they can’t in real life, no matter how bloody or sexy they might be, and Kromgorn the Barbarian is no exception. He and his guildies make constant warfare against their rivals in the Secret Order, a guild led by the dark Lich-Lord, who’s also rumored to be a crazy hacker in real life, and they make fun of players who just use the game for stupid things like getting laid. But when the Lich-Lord releases a powerful spell that traps most of the players in the game permanently, Kromgorn accidentally winds up stuck in the avatar of his friend Lacey—a stupid, low-level female character that was designed exclusively to get down and dirty with the in-game pleasure system. Even worse, he gets captured by the orcs and thrown into their harem dungeon, where he finds he’s powerless to resist his captors and has to seduce his way out! The developers really modeled female bodies correctly in this game, and it’s humiliating to have to go from being a high-level barbarian to a simpering little harem girl. With his guild drawing closer to an epic encounter with the Lich-Lord, they need all the high-level players they can get! Will Krom figure out a way to get himself out of this useless body and get back in time to help his friends, or will he be stuck forever working on his back in the slums of Lorengarde? The only way out of this mess might be to give in to his situation and embrace his new body in order to outmaneuver his foes. Who knows? He might even end up enjoying himself… With 150+ pages of humorous, gender-swapped fantasy action and some VERY steamy scenes, this book is intended for mature audiences who enjoy FF and MF encounters with lots of gender-bending fun.

As time runs down for the players trapped by the evil Lich-Lord in the hyper-realistic MMORPG Fantasy Realms Online, Kromgorn the Barbarian is still stuck playing as the gorgeous, pleasure-fueled Lacey the Courtesan, a character designed to level fastest when she’s getting busy with every NPC in sight. It’s a humiliating way to have to play the game, but at least he—er, she’s getting better at it! But now that Lacey has leveled her character up to an unprecedented level for a Courtesan and unlocked some of the secret, high-level perks of her class—like access to the spell trees of the Charisma-fueled Sorceress class—she finally isn’t quite so helpless as she once was. Thanks to her unique skills, she might end up being the most powerful magic-user on the server, and she has more than one way to make her enemies hot! Riding high from her clever victories over the Lich-Lord’s lieutenants, she takes to the skies with her guildmate Topper the Paladin to track down their lost friend Jazzus and confront the traitorous Haxor, before they pin down the location of the Lich-Lord and end his evil schemes once and for all. The only problem is that there are still a few nagging, unanswered questions… Why haven’t they been attacked directly yet? Why has it been so easy for Lacey to gain more power? And exactly how many more NPCs will she need to seduce before this is over? Lacey’s victories have all been a little too perfect… and the only person who has the answers to her questions is the Lich-Lord himself. The action is hot, the stakes are high, and Lacey will need to pull out every skill she can muster if she wants to win the day. Can she and her friends beat the Lich-Lord at his own game, or are they playing right into his hands? With numerous pages of humorous, gender-swapped fantasy action and some VERY steamy scenes, this book is intended for mature audiences who enjoy FF and MF encounters with lots of gender-bending fun.

A revolution in gender relations occurred in London around 1700, resulting in a sexual system that endured in many aspects until the sexual revolution of the 1960s. For the first time in European history, there emerged three genders: men, women, and a third gender of adult effeminate sodomites, or homosexuals. This third gender had radical consequences for the sexual lives of most men and women since it promoted an opposing ideal of exclusive heterosexuality. In Sex and the Gender Revolution, Randolph Trumbach reconstructs the worlds of eighteenth-century prostitution, illegitimacy, sexual violence, and adultery. In those worlds the majority of men became heterosexuals by avoiding sodomy and sodomite behavior. As men defined themselves more and more as heterosexuals, women generally experienced the new male heterosexuality as its victims. But women—as prostitutes, seduced servants, remarrying widows, and adulterous wives— also pursued passion. The seamy sexual underworld of extramarital behavior was central not only to the sexual lives of men and women, but to the very existence of marriage, the family, domesticity, and romantic love. London emerges as not only a geographical site but as an actor in its own right, mapping out domains where patriarchy, heterosexuality, domesticity, and female resistance take vivid form in our imaginations and senses. As comprehensive and authoritative as it is eloquent and provocative, this book will become an indispensable study for social and cultural historians and delightful reading for anyone interested in taking a close look at sex and gender in eighteenth-century London.
