As news reports of the horrific December 2004 tsunami in Asia reached the rest of the world, commentators were quick to seize upon the disaster as proof of either God s power or God s nonexistence, asking over and over, How could a good and loving God if such exists allow such suffering? In The Doors of the Sea David Bentley Hart speaks at once to those skeptical of Christian faith and to those who use their Christian faith to rationalize senseless human suffering. He calls both to recognize in the worst catastrophes not the providential will of God but rather the ongoing struggle between the rebellious powers that enslave the world and the God who loves it wholly.

What would biology look like if it took the problem of natural evil seriously? This book argues that biological descriptions of evolution are inherently moral, just as the biblical story of creation has biological implications. A complete account of evolution will therefore require theological input. The Dome of Eden does not try to harmonize evolution and creation. Harmonizers typically begin with Darwinism and then try to add just enough religion to make evolution more palatable, or they begin with Genesis and pry open the creation account just wide enough to let in a little bit of evolution. By contrast, Stephen Webb provides a theory of how evolution and theology fit together, and he argues that this kind of theory is required by the internal demands of both theology and biology. The Dome of Eden also develops a theological account of evolution that is distinct from the intelligent design movement. Webb shows how intelligent design properly discerns the inescapable dimension of purpose in nature but, like Darwinism itself, fails to make sense of the problem of natural evil. Finally, this book draws on the work of Karl Barth to advance a new reading of the Genesis narrative and the theology of Duns Scotus to provide the necessary metaphysical foundation for evolutionary thought.

From the Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning Adrian Tchaikovsky, The Doors of Eden is an extraordinary feat of the imagination and a page-turning adventure about parallel universes and the monsters that they hide. They thought we were safe. They were wrong. Four years ago, two girls went looking for monsters on Bodmin Moor. Only one came back. Lee thought she'd lost Mal, but now she's miraculously returned. But what happened that day on the moors? And where has she been all this time? Mal's reappearance hasn't gone unnoticed by MI5 officers either, and Lee isn't the only one with questions. Julian Sabreur is investigating an attack on top physicist Kay Amal Khan. This leads Julian to clash with agents of an unknown power - and they may or may not be human. His only clue is grainy footage, showing a woman who supposedly died on Bodmin Moor. Dr Khan's research was theoretical; then she found cracks between our world and parallel Earths. Now these cracks are widening, revealing extraordinary creatures. And as the doors crash open, anything could come through. "Tchaikovsky weaves a masterful tale... a suspenseful joyride through the multiverse." (Booklist)

VINTAGE CLASSICS MURDOCH: Funny, subversive, fearless and fiercely intelligent, Iris Murdoch was one of the great writers of the twentieth century. To celebrate her centenary Vintage Classics presents special editions of her greatest and most timeless novels. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY DAISY JOHNSON ‘I saw a monster rising from the waves.' Charles Arrowby has determined to spend the rest of his days in hermit-like contemplation. He buys a mysteriously damp house on the coast, far from the heady world of the theatre where he made his name, and there he swims in the sea, eats revolting meals and writes his memoirs. But then he meets his childhood sweetheart Hartley, and memories of her lovely, younger self crowd in – along with more recent lovers and friends – to disrupt his self-imposed exile. So instead of 'learning to be good', Charles proceeds to demonstrate how very bad he can be. Winner of the Man Booker Prize 1978.

This vivid historical saga of Viking exploration follows the adventures of an intrepid 11th century woman who voyages to North America. 11th century Iceland is a world where the old Norse gods are still invoked, even as Christianity gains favor, where the spirits of the dead roam the vast northern icefields, tormenting the living, and Viking explorers plunder foreign shores. Strong and self-reliant, Gundrid Thorbjarnardóttir lives at the remote edge of the known world, in a starkly beautiful landscape where the sea is the only connection to the shores beyond. With her husband Karlssefni, Gundrid traverses the sea from Iceland to Greenland, Norway, and even Rome. But it is the accidental discovery of North America, a place the Vikings call Vinland, that leads Gundrid to ponder the world and her place in it. Gudrid’s narrative describes a multi-layered voyage into the unknown, all recounted with astonishing immediacy and rich atmospheric detail. “The audacious female traveler Gudrid of Iceland is the original explorer’s explorer...Elphinstone has written a fine tribute to a woman whose tale is as warm and inviting as a hot spring on a clear winter day.’ The Times, UK

Not a pretty sight. Certainly not one the authorities on Mauritius, that gem of a tourist destination in a trio of idyllic islands once known as the Mascarenes, would like to become public knowledge. Their carefully nurtured image was of sparkling blue sea, emerald green palm fringes haphazardly angled along pure white beaches, gentle winds whispering through the casuarinas under an azure sky. This was ugly, messy. When journalist Holly Jones arrives in Mauritius to cover millionaire adventurer Connor Maguire's search for buried ancestral treasure, it promises to be two weeks in an exotic island paradise ... and a chance to start piecing together a broken heart. What she hasn't planned on is an infuriating, reluctant subject with a hidden agenda. Or one who manages to break down her carefully constructed barriers and awaken long-forgotten desires. After the body of a young woman is washed up on a beach, Holly finds herself embroiled in an unsolved murder case and the idyllic island's darkest secrets. Passionate, intriguing and compelling, The Forgotten Sea is Beverley Harper at her best yet.

How did a big-game fishing trip rudely interrupted by sharks inspire one of the key scenes in Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea? How did Robert Louis Stevenson's cruise to the cannibal-infested South Sea islands prove instrumental in his writing of The Beach of Falesa and The Ebb Tide? How did Masefield survive Cape Horn and a near-nervous breakdown to write Sea Fever? The waters of this world have swirled through storytelling ever since the Celts spun the tale of Beowulf and Homer narrated The Odyssey. What a beautiful day for Kevin and Mary to look for their dream home. As they were walking happily through a New England subdivision, Kevin stumbled upon a two story mansion that took his breath away. Kevin tried to open the door, but it was locked. Mary repeatedly told him that since the door was locked maybe they should leave. "This place has to be about two-hundred years old," Kevin said. He wasn't about to leave. Something was drawing him to this place. Kevin tried each window and finally found one that was open and told Mary to follow him inside. Mary refused since she thought they were trespassing. Kevin shrugged it off and climbed through the window. Just as he climbed in, dark clouds rolled in and rain came pouring down upon the house. "Mary, get inside before you get soaking wet,” Kevin urged. When Mary heard the thunder and the lightning, she didn't hesitate to enter the house. She grabbed hold of Kevin's arm, clinging for dear life, as he pulled her fragile body through the window. The place was dark and gloomy with an eerie presence about it. "Mary, stay right here. I'll find us some light and a blanket to keep you warm so we can get a better look at the place." Kevin was able to find an old lantern to light their way through the rest of the house. As Kevin and Mary looked the room over Mary approached a painting on the wall. Mary said "Kevin come over here and look at this." As Kevin approached the painting with the lantern shining bright all of a sudden his eyes were fixated on the old Sea Captain’s eyes in the painting. Then as he gazed deeper and deeper into the old Sea Captain’s eyes, Kevin became in a trance like state and started acting differently. He was not the same Kevin that he was just minutes before he stared into the old Sea Captain’s eyes in the painting. Mary said "Look, There is a name at the bottom of the painting that says Captain Bobby Jones with a date from 1845-1901. "Mary let's go explore the rest of the house said Kevin."
