Does God sovereignly elect some individuals for salvation while passing others by? Do human beings possess free will to embrace or reject the gospel? Did Christ die equally for all people or only for some? These questions have long been debated in the history of the Christian church. Answers typically fall into one of two main categories, popularly known as Calvinism and Arminianism. The focus of this book is to establish how one nineteenth-century evangelical group, the Brethren, responded to these and other related questions. The Brethren produced a number of colorful leaders whose influence was felt throughout the evangelical world. Although many critics have assumed the movement's theology was Arminian, this book argues that the Brethren, with few exceptions, advocated Calvinistic positions. Yet there were some twists along the way! The movement's radical biblicism, passionate evangelism, and strong aversion to systematic theology and creeds meant they refused to label themselves as Calvinists even though they affirmed Calvinism's soteriological principles--the so-called doctrines of grace.

How to Become a Christian 1. Admit that you have sinned. “For all have sinned . . . If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Romans 3:23, 1 John 1:8 Your sin separates you from God and leads to death. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5 “For the wages of sin is death . . .” Romans 6:23 You cannot get rid of your sin on your own. “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy.” Titus 3:5 2. Believe that Jesus Christ is the only one who can save you from your sins. “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 Jesus Christ, God's Son, led a sinless life, yet chose to be punished in our place. “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.” 1 Peter 3:18 He died on a cross and was buried. Three days later, God raised Him to life again to prove that death was defeated. “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures . . . he was buried . . . he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures . . . death no longer has dominion over him.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Romans 6:9 God offers to forgive our sins and invites us to spend eternity in Heaven with Him if we accept Christ's sacrifice on our behalf. “Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” Acts 10:43 “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24 3. Turn from your sins and invite Christ into your life. “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out.” Acts 3:19 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 If you are ready to take this important step, talk to God right now and say something like this: Dear God, I admit that I have sinned. I believe that You sent Your Son, Jesus, to take the punishment I deserve. Then You raised Him to life again, so that I may have eternal life. I turn now from my sins and ask You to forgive me. Please come into my life and be my Savior and Lord. In Jesus' name, amen. What's Next? If you've just invited Christ into your life, here are some things you can do to grow in your relationship with Him: Read the Bible to learn more about God and His plan for your life. Pray to God often to share your joys and problems and to confess your sins. Attend a Bible-teaching church where you can worship God and get to know other Christians. Share your faith. You have just received a wonderful gift. Tell someone! Write to us. Let us know about your decision, and we will send you some free literature to help you get started.

Aurelius Augustine (354-430) is one of the most prominently known figures in the history of the Christian church. He was a philosopher and theologian of the highest order, and steadfastly preached on the grace of God. He preached and wrote on the grace of God so extensively to preserve the truth of the gospel (especially against the heretic Pelagius) that he was deemed “the Doctor of Grace.” Many today hold to what has become known as the Five Points of Calvinism, or the doctrines of grace. They comprise the five points of Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace and the Perseverance of the Saints. But did Augustine believe these same “Calvinistic” doctrines? Is Augustine’s theological view of sin, election, the death of Christ, regeneration and sanctification the same as the Reformers, the Puritans, or even those who hold to the Gospel of Grace today? This work is a survey of that question and demonstrates from Augustine’s works that he was, undoubtedly, a Calvinist. This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

My own private opinion is that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and him crucified, unless you preach what now-a-days is called Calvinism. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else. I do not believe we can preach the gospel, if we do not preach justification by faith, without works; nor unless we preach the sovereignty of God in his dispensation of grace; nor unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering, love of Jehovah: nor do I think we can preach the gospel, unless we base it upon the peculiar redemption which Christ made for his elect and chosen people; nor can I comprehend a gospel which lets saints fall away after they are called, and suffers the children of God to be burned in the fires of damnation after having believed. Such a gospel I abhor. The gospel of the Bible is not such a gospel. We preach Christ crucified in a different fashion, and to all gainsayers we reply. "We have not so learned Christ." The doctrine of salvation is the watershed doctrine of Scripture. Flowing from that doctrine will be not only all other doctrine but also personal practice and Christian ministry. The major controversy concerning salvation is whether it is a result of the sovereign grace of God alone or a mixture of God's part and man's part. Addressing that issue is absolutely critical to the very foundations of Christianity itself. Whichever one of those premises is correct, we should expect to find it everywhere we look in Scripture, and that is precisely what we find. There is no truth that permeates the Bible more than the doctrines of God's sovereign grace. From Genesis to Revelation, in literally hundreds of verses, these doctrines call, capture, and command our attention. Of the many books of the Bible we could choose, the Gospel of John is among the most compelling because of its foundational nature. It is there we find some of the most profound teaching on the Doctrines of Grace in all Scripture. Examining more than one hundred verses in John, this small volume presents these great biblical and historical doctrines directly from the lips of our Lord.

The book Prophecy and the Doctrines of Grace attempts to connect the two great biblical themes of Gods sovereign grace and His divine plan for the future. It compares the views of both the reformed and dispensational camps, and how these differences affect ones views of future things. Other doctrines such as baptism, the Lords Day, and election are explored. The book closes with a discussion of the new heavens and the new earth in Revelation 21 & 22. We have a great and loving God, whose love for us spans from eternity past to eternity future. We can say with Paul in I Corinthians 2:9, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love him.
