Inhuman Materiality In Gothic Media

This book examines the manifestations of materiality across different gothic media to show the inhuman at the heart of literature, film and contemporary media, outlining a philosophy of horror that deals with the horror of the nonhuman, the machine and the nonorganic. The author explores how materiality lends itself ideally to discussions of gothic and horror and acts as a threat to attempts to control meaning which falls outside the realm of consciousness. It brings the two together by examining the manifestations of this materiality to focus on a form of horror that is concerned with the (in) human by reading blood as the conduit of an unnameable materiality that circulates through gothic media, seducing with its familiar mask of gothic aesthetics only to uncover the horror of a totally alienating and inhuman otherness. Film, media, popular culture, philosophy and nineteenth-century literature are brought together and juxtaposed to create a continuity of ideas, and highlighting differences. The book offers innovative readings of notions of blood inscription in different media, of the Dark Web, accelerationism and technoscience to account for the widespread haemophilia in contemporary culture. This title is an essential read for researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students in film studies, media studies, literature, philosophy, cultural theory and popular culture. Its interdisciplinary nature, clear exposition of thought and theoretical ideas will make it a key resource for both students and for general readers with an interest in contemporary horror, media and pop culture.

This book subjects the hidden phenomenon of benefit sanctions in the UK to sustained examination and critique. It examines the relationship between benefit sanctions and conditionality, shows how benefit sanctions have developed in the UK over the last 100 years, compares benefit sanctions in the UK first with benefit sanctions in other countries and secondly with other administrative penalties and court fines. These comparisons indicate that benefit sanctions are not only unusually harsh and cause real hardship but are also, in many important respects, incompatible with administrative justice and the rule of law. This book assesses the problems of punishment outside the courts, where few of the usual safeguards associated with punishment in the courts apply, and concludes by considering both what could be done about benefit sanctions and whether anything is likely to be done as long as work is prioritised over welfare.

Through an examination of debates about cosmopolitanism and human rights, Inhuman Conditions questions key ideas about what it means to be human. Cheah links influential arguments about the new cosmopolitanism to a perceptive examination of the older cosmopolitanism of Kant and Marx, and juxtaposes them with proliferating formations of collective culture to reveal the flaws in claims about the imminent decline of the nation-state and the obsolescence of popular nationalism.

The Demise Of Virtue In Virtual America

Although the financial disaster of 2008 proved devastatingly quick, the evolution of the bad faith that drove the collapse is a more gradual story, and one that David Bosworth powerfully narrates in The Demise of Virtue in Virtual America: The Moral Origins of the Great Recession, his sweeping history of the forces driving ethical, political, and economic change over the last sixty years. Here, Bosworth traces how the commercialization of public spaces and electronic information has created a new and enclosed American place. Chapter by chapter, he then shows how the materialist values of this Virtual America have suffused our everyday lives, co-opting the themes of our narratives, the planks of our parties, the practices of our professions, and the most intimate aspects of our personal lives, including our beliefs about God, marriage, and childcare. From Ronald Reagan and Disneyland to modern pharmacology and "prosperity theology," from the phony conservatism of Wall Street to the faux rebellion of "transgressive" art, Bosworth's alternative story of American life since 1950 relentlessly challenges today's dominant narratives--narratives that, as he reveals, made both the calamitous invasion of Iraq and the economic collapse of 2008 all too likely.

In 1573, George Saunders, a respected merchant tailor, was killed by his wife's lover. The conspiracy involved Saunders' wife, her best friend, and a servant. All were found guilty and hanged, but not before a suspended clergyman fell in love with Mrs. Saunders and sought to have her pardoned. Strange, Inhuman Deaths describes in vivid and exciting detail the Saunders murder and three other well-documented cases that occurred between 1538 and 1573. These violent stories are powerful and lively, and the motivations and personalities revealed speak to us directly across the centuries. Murder most foul, murder most English-be there as the tradition begins.

Winin Pereira's 'Inhuman Rights: The Western System and Global Human Rights Abuse' presents a sharply critical and revealing account of how the West has actually misused conventionally defined human rights set forth in the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights to promote and maintain its political and economic hegemony over the rest of the world. More than sixty years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is important to place this historic document in its broader political, economic and cultural context.
