The Co-opting of Education by Extremist Factions: Professing Hate is a study of the ways in which various extremist groups have appropriated education for social manipulation in order to gain political power, and, in some cases, to incite violence. It is a detailed exploration of case studies representing both a wide range of situational differences (time, place, and political orientation) and experiential similarities. To examine a broad scope of circumstances, this book explores various types of rule (from National Socialism to communism to capitalism) from around the world (Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America) and spans time periods from the mid-twentieth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century. With the purpose of allowing these diverse situations to dialogue with one another, this study explores each country in its own right as well as in relation to others, ultimately demonstrating the extent to which they influenced one another.

This is the seventh report in a series on the foreign policy aspects of the war against terrorism. During the course of these inquiries the Committee has covered subjects such as the fall of the Taliban and efforts to rebuild Afghanistan, shifts in the organisation of Al Qaeda, the war and subsequent situation in Iraq, multilateral efforts to tackle terrorist financing and global work to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This report returns to a number of these themes and discusses the situations in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Iraq and Iran. In addition it looks at the UK's relations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Not only are both countries allies in the war against terrorism, they also have experience in understanding and then thwarting the recruitment of extremists.

The terrorist attacks of 9/11 caused Americans to realize that our sense of invincibility had been shattered. This paper identifies al-Qa¿ida and ¿Salafi-Jihadists¿ as our enemy and recommends new approaches to fighting terrorism. Explores al-Qa¿ida¿s organization, leaders, doctrine, and radical ideologies. Argues that the war we must fight is one against Islamist trans-national actors who openly engage in terrorism or support terrorism. Our current national and military strategies to combat terrorism are inadequate to take on an ideologically emboldened transnational foe. We must refocus our efforts and prepare to fight a war of several generations (long war). Several initiatives are recommended that include development of a national strategy. Ill.

Religion And Religiosity In The Philippines And Indonesia

This comparative exploration looks at religion and politics in the social dynamics of Southeast Asia's two most populous nations. The Philippines and Indonesia are treated as one vast "Phil-Indo" archipelago. Eight leading scholars contribute interwoven and contending essays. The authors find that while neither country promotes a state religion, both lack partitions between church and state. Social dynamics of faith in each elude constitutional restrictions. In the Philippines, a Spanish tradition of an ecclesiastical state exists in tension with a Jeffersonian notion of separation of realms. In Indonesia, pre-Islamic concepts of a god-king fuse state and society, as modern initiatives surge from the premise of a prevailing Islamic community. Official religiosity pervades Indonesian national life, while Filipinos act out their private religiosity en masse, trying to overcome deficiencies in state and church. The book includes 38 photographs, in color and black and white, with commentaries that further illustrate the themes of each chapter. Contributors include Azyumardi Azra (University Islam Negeri, Indonesia), Jose M. Cruz (Ateneo de Manila University, The Philippines), Donald K. Emmerson (Institute for International Studies, Stanford University) Theodore Friend (Foreign Policy Research Institute), Robert W. Hefner (Institute for the Study of Economic Culture, Boston University), Vicente Leuterio Rafael (University of Washington), Jose Eliseao Rocamora (Institute for Popular Democracy, The Philippines) and David Joel Steinberg (Long Island University).
