In 2016 the Rams left St. Louis for Los Angeles—having departed L.A. for St. Louis in 1995—and caused much heartbreak among fans. NFL teams are notorious for decamping to more profitable markets and the Rams’ history of opportunistic moves goes back to 1946, when they left Cleveland, their original hometown, where fans had cheered them to a championship a month earlier. The move to L.A. from Cleveland shocked the NFL and shook up its power structure. It also jolted the all-white league into reintegration, prepared the way for the Browns, and made the Rams the only NFL champs ever to have spent the following season in a different city. This is the story of how the Rams went from a home-grown Ohio team funded by local businessmen to the first major-league franchise on the West Coast, and how their departure jumpstarted a chain of events in Cleveland that continues to this day.

They are the dirty little secrets of Cleveland's past, mob guys so good--or so bad--that you rarely hear their stories. Men such as Micky McBride turned newsboys into sluggers, gave bookies a run for suckers' losing bets and created the Cleveland Browns when football was still a sport the players knew how to win. There was the Jewish Navy, taking laundry trucks to Canada and bringing back barges filled with booze. Then there were the rug joints--the Harvard Club, the Beverly Hills Club, the Mounds Club--where Moe Dalitz mastered the art of taking your money and helped build Las Vegas, the best "man trap" in America. Join author Ted Schwarz as he tracks wanted killers through the Statler Hotel and navigates the secret history of the Cleveland mob.

Excerpt: Phil H. Bucklew (December 18, 1914 December 30, 1992) was a former professional football player who went on to become a US Naval officer who served in one of the Navy's first "special warfare" units during World War II. While serving in the European Theater of Operations, he was twice awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest decoration in the United States Military. After World War II, Bucklew completed his PhD at Columbia University and went on to command SEAL Team One. In the early stages of the Vietnam War he authored a report in which he predicted the Vietcong would make use of the intercoastal waterways and rivers as routes for supplies and personnel. Although it was initially dismissed, this report was later used as a source to increase the use of Navy SEALs in direct action missions. In 1969 Bucklew retired as a Captain and worked as a consultant for a shipbuilding company in the private sector. Bucklew died in 1992 after a series of strokes. He is known as the "Father of Naval Special Warfare" and the Phil H. ...

Cleveland: 1930-2000 is the second of two volumes commemorating the history of the heart and pride of northeast Ohio, the city of Cleveland. Situated on the shores of Lake Erie, Cleveland emerged as an industrial and commercial giant at the end of the Nineteenth Century, earning herself the title of America's "Sixth City" as her population soared, nearing one million. Like many American manufacturing giants, Cleveland experienced a period of decline in industry and commerce, and as with many other urban areas, civil rights issues threatened to rip apart the fabric of the city. Yet, Cleveland emerged from these tumultuous times with a renewed commitment for a better future. Explore Cleveland's golden age, her decline, and her rebirth with this commemorative photographic history.

Football In Baltimore

Author : Ted Patterson
ISBN : 9781421412375
Genre : History
File Size : 28.7 MB
Format : PDF, Docs
Download : 184
Read : 1102

The second edition of Ted Patterson’s illustrated history of football in Baltimore continues the story of the Ravens' success—from their first Super Bowl victory in 2001 to the emotional parade through downtown Baltimore after winning Super Bowl XLVII. Patterson is joined by Baltimore poet and sports aficionado Dean Smith, whose new chapters capture the energy of Purple Fridays, the larger-than-life personalities of Ray Lewis, Hall of Famer Jonathan Ogden, Jamal Lewis, Matt Stover, Ed Reed, and Joe Flacco, and the city's embrace of the Ravens as a reflection of Baltimore itself. Football in Baltimore is a tour of one of the world's premier collections of Baltimore sports memorabilia—highlighting memorable games and players and exploring a pop culture that surrounded and has survived them. Patterson moved to Baltimore in what turned out to be the final decade of the Baltimore Colts and has amassed a remarkable collection of items that both collectors and sports fans will enjoy. Patterson introduces us to the teams and early stars of Johns Hopkins and Morgan State; Army-Navy games in old Municipal Stadium; high-school rivalries like City-Poly, Loyola–Calvert Hall, Gilman-McDonogh, and the great years of Patterson High; the original Colts (colors silver and green); and, at considerable length, the legendary Baltimore Colts of Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Raymond Berry, Alan "the Horse" Ameche, Artie Donovan, Bert Jones, and Lydell Mitchell. He includes the next chapters in this eventful story: the fight to bring pro football back to the city, the dawn of the Ravens era, and the building of a new football stadium in downtown Baltimore.

During World War II, the National Football League faced a crisis unimaginable today: a shortage of players. By 1943, so many players were in the armed forces that the league was forced to fold one team (the Cleveland Rams) and merge two others: the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles. And so the Steagles were born, with a roster that included military draft rejects, aging stars lured out of retirement, and even a couple of active servicemen who managed to get leave for the games. The team’s center was deaf in one ear, its wide receiver was blind in one eye, and its halfback had bleeding ulcers. One player was so old he'd never played football with a helmet. Yet, somehow, this motley bunch managed to post a winning record—the first for the Eagles and just the second for the Steelers. But Last Team Standing isn’t just about football. It’s also about life in the United States during World War II, a time of fear and hope, of sacrifice and momentous change. It’s about rationing, racism, and Rosie the Riveter. It’s about draft boards, bond drives, and movie stars. Above all, it’s about the men and women of the Greatest Generation who couldn’t fight, but helped win the war in immeasurable ways. Matthew Algeo is the author of Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure and The President Is a Sick Man. An award-winning journalist, Algeo has reported from four continents for public radio’s All Things Considered, Marketplace, and Morning Edition.

In 1946, the Cleveland Rams, having just won the NFL championship, moved to sunny Los Angeles. The LA Rams experienced immediate success, making four NFL Championship Game appearances in six years—one of which they won. From Los Angeles, the team moved to St. Louis in 1995, only to return to Los Angeles again in 2016. Regardless of the city or the stadium that they’ve called home, the Rams have compiled a myriad of memorable moments and at times have drawn record crowds. In Game of My Life Rams, award-winning sportswriter Jay Paris offers accounts of many of these moments, through the words of the players who experienced them firsthand—as members of the Los Angeles and St. Louis–based teams. Those legends featured include Roman Gabriel, Jim Hardy, Vince Ferragamo, Jack Youngblood, Kurt Warner, Eric Dickerson, Tom Mack, Nolan Cromwell, Fred Dryer, Henry Ellard, Johnny Hekker, and more. A great gift for any fan of Rams football—past or present!
