A dark, compelling fantasy for readers of The Graveyard Book about a mysterious girl seeking the truth about the magic that brought her to life. Made of dust and bone and imagination, Irréelle fears she’s not quite real. Only the finest magical thread tethers her to life—and to Miss Vesper. But for all her efforts to please her cruel creator, the thread is unravelling. Irréelle is forgetful as she gathers bone dust. She is slow returning from the dark passages beneath the cemetery. Worst of all, she is unmindful of her crooked bones. When Irréelle makes one final, unforgivable mistake by destroying a frightful creature just brought to life, Miss Vesper threatens to imagine her away once and for all. Defying her creator for the very first time, Irréelle flees to the underside of the graveyard and embarks on an adventure to unearth the mysterious magic that breathes bones to life, even if it means she will return to dust and be no more. An excavation at the lost gardens of Earlsacre Hall is called to a halt when a skeleton is discovered under a 300 year old stone plinth, a corpse that seems to have been buried alive. But DS Wesley Peterson has little time to indulge in his hobby of archaeology. He has a more recent murder case to solve. A man has been found stabbed to death in a caravan at a popular holiday park and the only clue to his identity is a newspaper cutting about the restoration of Earlsacre. Does local solicitor Brian Willerby have the answer? He seems eager to talk to Wesley but before he can reveal his secret he is found dead during a 'friendly' game of village cricket, apparently struck by a cricket ball several times with some force. If Wesley is looking for a demon bowler this appears to let out most of the village side. But what is it about Earlsacre Hall that leads people to murder?

“[Bass is] the real deal.” —Kathy Reichs The sixth electrifying forensic mystery by author Jefferson Bass (“a fresh voice in the crime novel arena” —Seattle Post-Intelligencer), The Bone Yard is the most gripping installment yet in the New York Times bestselling Body Farm series. Called away from Tennessee’s renowned Body Farm (the real life human decomposition laboratory around which these remarkable thrillers are based), Dr. Bill Brockton discovers the dark side of the Sunshine state when he’s called in to investigate human remains found on the grounds of a Florida boys’ reform school. Rich in authentic forensic detail and featuring a protagonist as involving as crime fiction’s most popular medical examiners—including Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta, Karin Slaughter’s Sara Linton, and Kathy Reichs’s star forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan—The Bone Yard is unassailable evidence that this series “just keeps getting better” (Booklist).

"I began 'The bone garden' while undergoing physical therapy after knee replacement surgery. That difficult recovery period left me feeling depressed and broken. Being housebound during an unusually hot summer did nothing to relieve my desire to escape. When I looked out my windows it seemed like I could actually watch the weeds overgrowing my garden. It seemed like an appropriate metaphor for what was going on with my body. So I turned to art as a way to remind myself that even broken things can be rebuilt: knees can mend, souls can be revived and, eventually, gardens can be tended"--Colophon.

Rachel loved her garden so much she had her husband Henry put a bench facing her garden so she could spend hours reading in the sunlight and gazing at the beautiful flowers she planted. Rachel wanted her garden to be the envy of every garden grower in the state but wasn't really sure how she was going to do it. She read every book about gardening she could but she was getting frustrated. Then one day when she was reading one of her books on gardening she just remembered that her husband Henry had a laboratory in their basement. Rachel decided that one night when her husband was doing one of his experiments she would peek her head through the doorway and watch what he was doing. Rachel quietly walked down the basement and slowly opened the door just enough to see what her husband was doing. Rachel didn't want him to know she was watching him because he didn't like to be disturbed when he's working on his experiments. Rachel was getting more frustrated because she didn't see him working on any experiments on flowers. Just as Rachel was slowly shutting the door she noticed he went over to another table and brought a flower that was in a pot and placed it on the table. This got Rachel excited. She slowly opened the door just enough not to be noticed. Henry opened a blue bottle and placed a few drops of the solution on the flower and sure enough the flower got larger and more beautiful than ever. Rachel shut the door and scurried off to their bedroom and pretended she was asleep.
