What can emission lines tell us about an astrophysical object? A workshop at the Space Telescope Science Institute was dedicated to address just this question – for a host of objects (including planetary nebulae and active galactic nuclei) across a broad range of wavelengths (from the infrared through to gamma-rays). This book presents a detailed pedagogical account of the equation of state and its applications in several important and fast growing topics in theoretical physics, chemistry and engineering. This book is the storv of the analysis of starlight by astronomical spectroscopy. It describes the development of the subject from the time of Joseph Fraunhofer, who, in 1814, used a telescope-mounted prism to observe the spectral light emitted from several bright stars. He discovered that light was missing at certain colours (wavelengths) in the starlight, and these so-called spectral lines were subsequently shown to hold clues to the nature of the stars themselves. The book explains how the classification of stars using their line spectra developed into a major branch of astronomy whilst new methods in astrophysics made possible the approximate quantitative analysis of spectral lines in the 1920s and 1930s. After the Second World War these techniques were considerably improved when computers were programmed to model the structure of the outer layers of stars. Basic concepts in spectroscopy and spectral analysis are also covered and. finally. Dr Hearnshaw comments on the stellar spectroscopy of some individual star.

The book first offers information on the division of the spectra of rare earth elements and Sc and Y into three groups. The text underscores that in preparing the Atlas, the spectral pure-grade rare earth oxides sold by the Johnson & Matthey Co. were considered. Through the help of their spectra, the usable analysis lines and the wavelength values of the interfering spectral lines are created. The operating and photographic conditions are tabulated. The adaptive line enhancer is a new device with unique capabilities. The device has significant applications in the enhancement of narrowband spectral lines in a broadband noise field when there is a poor signal-to-noise ratio at the input and there is insufficient a priori information on which to design appropriate filters. The device automatically filters out the components of the signal which are uncorrelated in time and passes the correlated portions. Since the properties of the device are determined solely by the input signal statistics, the properties of the filter automatically adjust to variations in the input signal statistics to obtain the LMS approximation to a Weiner-Hopf filter. The device will thus track slowly varying spectral lines in broadband noise. This paper derives the properties of an N-weight adaptive line enhancer for a single stable input spectral line in both an arbitrary and a white noise background. The fundamental properties of the adaptive line enhancer are discussed in terms of these solutions. (Author).
