Excerpt from The American Journal of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children, Vol. 56: July-December, 1907 There are some of you who may remember the ridicule or skepticism that greeted the announcement of these measures; there are many more of you who remember how the pestilence gathered its terrors to itself and fled away in a night - and it has never returned. On December 21, less than three months later, Garrigues, in re porting the result of his work, was able to say: The effect of the treatment has been wonderful. As if by magic all trouble disappeared. Ninety-seven women have been delivered since its introduction and not only has none Of them died, but there has scarcely been any disease among them - only three had any rise of temperature. The pavilions are scarcely recognizable. Where we used to have offensive odors, feverish, prostrated, or despair ing patients, overworked nurses, and despondent doctors, the air is pure, the patients look well, their temperatures are normal, the nurses are cheerful, and the doctors happy. Could there be a greater triumph than this? Was ever greater lesson taught more quietly? What battle of the greatest general of the world's red fields was ever fraught with consequences more momentous? Excerpt from The American Journal of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children, Vol. 72: July-December, 1915 It is generally stated by German writers that pubiotomy is contraindicated in primiparous women except in unusual circum stances on account of the danger of deep communicating vaginal tears and of injury to the bladder. No doubt this is correct unless especial precautions are taken to prevent such complications; but in my experience they need not occur more frequently than in multiparous women, provided the vulva and lower vagina have been dilated manually before beginning the operation. This being the case, it is interesting to inquire whether there was any difference in the incidence of spontaneous labor in the two classes of women. Excerpt from The American Journal of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children, Vol. 45: January-June, 1902 Vice-president of the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Honorary Member of the Surgical Society of Belgium. Etc loston, Mass. Obstetricians have in the past formulated the rule that a pregnant woman afflicted with carcinoma of the cervix was prac tically lost to all resources of medical art, and they argued that. As the pregnancy would in most cases go on to term, everything should be sacrificed to save the offspring and that an operation on the mother was out of the question. But as a surgeon I would reason as one, and I believe that carcinoma of the cervix. When diagnosed and operated on in time - that is to say. Before any extension beyond the uterine tissues has occurred - will give a long survival and a prolonged, if not to say complete, cure; and in this paper I shall endeavor to demonstrate that radical operations are indicated in a very large per cent of these cases, thus reversing the obstetrical ruling. Excerpt from The American Journal of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children, Vol. 30: July-December, 1894 A second application is to traumatism, to all non-malignant or to 'the early stages of infectious disorders, and indicates the retention Of all tissue or organs which have a reasonable chance of adding to the local or general well-being of the patient. The third application of the term conservatism among us is one'of derision, and is employed to imply that its advocate, wanting in nerve, uses it rather as a justification of a surgical incompleteness which, with the Operator, is due less to the real demands of the situation than to his own ignorance or timidity. It is needless to say that the last acceptation of the term is out of place in this discussion, and, as there can be no issue upon the first, we have left for the purposes of this discussion only the second. We beg leave, then, to direct your attention solely to conservative operations as applicable to traumatism, to the non malignant disorders, and to the earlier stages of the infectious disorder (sepsis) found in the genital tract of the female. Excerpt from The American Journal of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children, Vol. 60: July-December, 1909 Most of the knowledge gained about the interrelation between these glands is based on the rather rough experiments upon animals and the clinical results obtained by successful treatment. I do not deny the connection of some of these organs with the sympathetic and the vagus, and there is no doubt that electrical treatment of the sympathetic gives good results in Graves' disease, though it is not the sovereign remedy which the French school claims it to be. Nerves doubtless influence the secretion of glands, as for instance the submaxillary, but our knowledge of their functions except as mere conductive organs is so limited that they have to be omitted in the discussion of the disease. Inasmuch as these organs, when successfully transplanted, are ready to take up their internal secretion, we can safely omit all the nervous theories from our discussion (transplantation of ovaries, Halban) (thyroid: Christiani and Kummer, Rfaefl'er, Kocher). The influence of those organs on the human body must be transmitted through the circulatory system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
