The Andromeda Ascendant is the last surviving ship of the long-dead Systems Commonwealth interstellar empire. It's captain, Dylan Hunt, with the crew of the Eureka Maru, has been trying to contact outlying planets who might rejoin the revived Commonwealth. But one such planet responds to the Andromeda's friendly advances with an all-out attack that cripples the Andromeda. Fleeing on the limited power that the ship can muster, Hunt, Beka Valentine and the rest of the crew seek a resupply depot, but none is near enough for them to reach before repairs, except for an abandoned station, uninhabited since the collapse of the empire. When Hunt, systems analyst Seamus Harper, and Andromeda's AI Rommie get into the station, they find it's not quite uninhabited. Strange presences assail them. Something very dark, evil, and entirely unknown. And while they try to get what they need without being killed by whatever is lurking on the station, something is attacking the Andromeda itself. There's plenty of action and suspense before this routine resupply mission can be finished . . . if it can be finished. Biotech companies are racing to alter the genetic building blocks of the world's food. In the United States, the primary venue for this quiet revolution, the acreage of genetically modified crops has soared from zero to 70 million acres since 1996. More than half of America's processed grocery products-from cornflakes to granola bars to diet drinks-contain gene-altered ingredients. But the U.S., unlike Europe and other democratic nations, does not require labeling of modified food. Dinner at the New Gene Café expertly lays out the battle lines of the impending collision between a powerful but unproved technology and a gathering resistance from people worried about the safety of genetic change.

Dna Polymorphisms As Disease Markers

The purpose of this workshop was to assess the value of DNA polymorphisms for the prediction, diagnosis or elucidation of aetiology for common metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hyperlipidaemia and atherosclerosis. The advent of recombinant DNA techniques has produced an explosion in knowledge of restriction site polymorphisms and hypervariable sequences around candidate genes for such common metabolic diseases as atherosclerosis, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes mellitus. These diseases are the major causes of morbidity and mortality in Western societies today. Since 1983 it has become apparent that there is much more variation in the frequency and sites of these DNA polymorphisms in human populations than was initially appreciated and that the majority of these DNA polymorphisms are only linkage markers for the disease. Consequently it was considered timely for laboratories involved in the mapping of these DNA mutations to meet together to discuss the implications of their studies. The main issues are whether such DNA polymorphisms will lead to an identification of major aetiological loci and which are the best techniques to achieve this? What is the cause of the differences in frequencies of such polymorphisms amongst world populations? Are such studies best conducted in homogeneous populations or in pedigrees? Are haplotypes, though more laborious to construct, a better way to proceed than analysis of single site polymorphisms? What are the consensus polymorphic sites that relate to the common metabolic diseases of diabetes, atherosclerosis and the hyperlipidaemias? The real need now to discuss the theoretical background behind the

Neuronal Nicotinic Receptors

Author : Francesco Clementi
ISBN : 3540661239
Genre : Medical
File Size : 25.92 MB
Format : PDF, ePub

Neuronal nicotinic receptors are key molecules for signal transduction in a number of neuronal pathways. They are widely distributed in the brain and are known to be involved in cognitive tasks, including learning and memory, in smoking addiction and in several brain diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's dementias, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. This book provides a comprehensive review of the field, starting with a historical perspective and dealing with the molecular structure of these receptors, their biophysical and pharmacological properties, their distribution in central and peripheral nervous systems, and their major involvement in brain functions. Particular emphasis is paid to drugs (both new and old) that are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving neuronal nicotinic receptors. Finally, the relevance of these receptors in smoking addiction is carefully evaluated, together with future trends and the latest results.

Bacterial Cell To Cell Communication

Author : Donald R. Demuth
ISBN : 1139447971

File Size : 78.66 MB
Format : PDF, Docs

Many bacterial diseases are caused by organisms growing together as communities or biofilms. These microorganisms have the capacity to coordinately regulate specific sets of genes by sensing and communicating amongst themselves utilizing a variety of signals. This book examines the mechanisms of quorum sensing and cell-to-cell communication in bacteria and the roles that these processes play in regulating virulence, bacterial interactions with host tissues, and microbial development. Recent studies suggest that microbial cell-to-cell communication plays an important role in the pathogenesis of a variety of disease processes. Furthermore, some bacterial signal molecules may possess immunomodulatory activity. Thus, understanding the mechanisms and outcomes of bacterial cell-to-cell communication has important implications for appreciating host-pathogen interactions and ultimately may provide new targets for antimicrobial therapies that block or interfere with these communication networks.

Analysis Of Deterministic Cyclic Gene Regulatory Network Models With Delays

Author : Mehmet Eren Ahsen
ISBN : 9783319156064
Genre : Science
File Size : 70.50 MB
Format : PDF

This brief examines a deterministic, ODE-based model for gene regulatory networks (GRN) that incorporates nonlinearities and time-delayed feedback. An introductory chapter provides some insights into molecular biology and GRNs. The mathematical tools necessary for studying the GRN model are then reviewed, in particular Hill functions and Schwarzian derivatives. One chapter is devoted to the analysis of GRNs under negative feedback with time delays and a special case of a homogenous GRN is considered. Asymptotic stability analysis of GRNs under positive feedback is then considered in a separate chapter, in which conditions leading to bi-stability are derived. Graduate and advanced undergraduate students and researchers in control engineering, applied mathematics, systems biology and synthetic biology will find this brief to be a clear and concise introduction to the modeling and analysis of GRNs.
