In August 1971, the Brooklyn Council of Churches asked Reverend Herbert Daughtry to provide chaplain services for the Boy Scouts Camp in upstate New York. “I viewed it as a Godsend,” says Reverend Daughtry. “Those were tough times for my family and me. My ministry seemed unproductive. Church and personal debts were mounting. Money was scarce. Confusion and discord reigned.” That time proved life-changing. Surrounded by the majestic summits and flowing streams of the Catskill Mountains, Herbert Daughtry wrestled with his faith, exploring and testing new ideas about what it means to really believe and trust in God. The result is this volume. For all who face a crisis in faith ... who struggle to believe in the face of mounting obstacles ... who wrestle with God in the midst of towering challenges ... this practical guide to building, maintaining, and keeping your faith is for YOU!

This book teaches how to define ones self. The author believes that from the time you enter your mother's womb to the time you die, you are trying to get "Ready for the Next Round." He tells us that you want to get out of your mother's belly and onto her lap to get the nurturing and strength you need to get off her lap and on to the floor to crawl then, walk, talk and develop a personality like everyone else. We want to be like everyone else and be accepted. The problem is that there are things that happens to us even before we are born that precludes us from being like everyone else and we have absolutely no control of it. We cannot control our gender, race, height, health, whether our parents are rich, poor, educated or uneducated or if they are kind or mean. Even after we are born, there are things that happens to us that we have no control over. Our parents give us our name. As a teacher for many years I met female students with totally inappropriate names like, Vodka, Marijuana, and Tequila. One young man's name was Vivian. He was From South America where that name was interchangeable, like Stacey, Tracy or Leslie. As a result of these inappropriate names, there students were teased daily because of their parent's poor choices. Our parents also give us our belief system. Just because you believe something doesn't make it true. They also give us our religion. Just hope yours in one that is accepted by most people who live in your domain. Being different means getting "Ready for the Next Round."

Certain questions naturally arise about those who literally expect the end of the world in our time: Why do they think this? Why do some people believe them? How do their exhortations work to persuade an audience and to mobilize that audience to actions and commitments? These are the motivating questions of this unique volume, which describes apocalyptic as a rhetorical genre of discourse. Brummett first recasts insights drawn from past scholarly and theological studies to feature their relevance to contemporary apocalyptic, then examines a variety of "real" apocalyptic to illustrate the ways in which these rhetorical discourses actually work.

Living Ethics

Author : Michael J. Bugeja
ISBN : STANFORD:36105131651510
Genre : Philosophy
File Size : 35.95 MB
Format : PDF
Download : 453

In a seamlessly wired world of television, computers, and BlackBerrys, where does ethics fit in? To address that question, Living Ethics calls for a moral convergence to complement the technological one. Identifying principles that apply across media platforms, Michael Bugeja has created a thorough and well-researched work that avoids the prescriptive language used by many texts; instead, he encourages critical thinking through examples that build, challenge, and enhance readers' value systems. While many ethics texts focus almost exclusively on journalistic ethics, this award-winning text (recipient of the 2009 Clifford G. Christians Award for Research in Media Ethics) emphasizes unifying principles that collapse and transcend the boundaries of a wide variety of media sources--including newspapers, magazines, radio, television, public relations, photojournalism, advertising, and other forms of traditional and online mass communication. As readers will discover, the circumstances of ethical issues may vary, but the moral processes used to resolve them are basically the same. Resolutely practical, Living Ethics is written in a clear and cogent style that helps readers: * Understand unifying principles from historical, philosophical, and political perspectives * Grasp the utility of principles that engage audiences and clients while respecting the diverse cultures in an increasingly global media environment * Explore moral convergence through the eyes of more than 100 practitioners at major newsrooms, agencies, and organizations * Examine ethical issues visually through more than 20 photos and illustrations * Develop a set of principles to guide their careers across a multitude of platforms
