He was so overwhelmed by Milligan's account of his forty years of depressive experiences that he knew he had found the person to help him illuminate and explore the mysterious and sometimes terrifying illness that is clinical depression. Depression and How to Survive It is the result of this collaboration, through which Anthony Clare charts the development of Spike Milligan's illness and the strategies he uses in dealing with the often misunderstood disorder of clinical depression. Drawing inspiration and advice from Spike's experience, Depression and How to Survive It is a book which takes you to the depths of human unhappiness in order to show you the way towards leading a happy life. A unique book about human psychology from one of Britain's most successful psychiatrists, providing a revelatory insight into the mind of Spike Milligan, everyone's favourite goon.

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Last Christmas I almost killed myself. Almost. I've had a lot of almosts. Never gone from almost to deed. Don't think I ever will. But it was a bad almost. Living Better is Alastair Campbell's honest, moving and life affirming account of his lifelong struggle with depression. It is an autobiographical, psychological and psychiatric study, which explores his own childhood, family and other relationships, and examines the impact of his professional and political life on himself and those around him. But it also lays bare his relentless quest to understand depression not just through his own life but through different treatments. Every bit as direct and driven, clever and candid as he is, this is a book filled with pain, but also hope -- he examines how his successes have been in part because of rather than despite his mental health problems -- and love. We all know someone with depression. There is barely a family untouched by it. We may be talking about it more than we did, back in the era of 'boys don't cry' - they did you know - and when a brave face or a stiff upper lip or a best foot forward was seen as the only way to go. But we still don't talk about it enough. There is still stigma, and shame, and taboo. There is still the feeling that admitting to being sad or anxious makes us weak. It took me years, decades even to get to this point, but I passionately believe that the reverse is true and that speaking honestly about our feelings and experiences (whether as a depressive or as the friend or relative of a depressive) is the first and best step on the road to recovery. So that is what I have tried to do here.

Poetry To Survive Depression

Hi everyone, Firstly, thank you for choosing my book. My name is Gregory Mcilwaine and I live in a place called Craigavon, in Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland. Throughout my life I have worked in a wide variety of roles such as chef, youth worker, support worker in a homeless hostel, factory worker, security officer and self-defence instructor. Six years ago that all came to an end as from 2002 I started to suffer badly from severe depression and other symptoms of anxiety. These steadily got worse until in 2014 I was diagnosed with Chronic Post traumatic Stress Disorder,(PTSD) due to personal trauma brought on by events throughout my life. I had started writing poems in my late teens but it wasn't until I became ill and got involved in a creative writing class that I took my poetry seriously and I couldn't get over how my poetry or just writing my feelings down was so therapeutic and had a calming effect and relieved me of some stress as I spilled my heart out on to paper. You don't have to be a poet or any type of expert to write something down in whatever style you prefer. No one truly knows what it is like to suffer mental illness unless they experience it themselves. I hope I can help you to understand as I describe what it is like to suffer from PTSD and the depression it brings, as best as I can. I'm publishing this anthology to maybe encourage someone who are suffering similar mental health issues to start writing as a therapy, whether it be poetry, storytelling or just jotting down feelings. Hopefully, through writing, you will find peace and also help others in their struggles. The main thing is that you enjoy it and get some of your worries out of your system. It also works as a distraction from everyday life as you focus on what you are writing. So I will leave you now with a thought from a few years ago when I was on a creative writing class, someone asked me " Why do you put all your feelings and problems down on paper?" and my response was " Because they are easier to carry that way".

Conquer The Crash

Today's financial and economic tribulations were a long time in the making. Many people ask, "Why didn't someone see it coming?" A New York Times bestselling book did see it coming. Over 100,000 people read it in time to protect their wealth. The book foresaw and explained the collapse in home prices, plunge in stocks, subprime debacle, liquidity crisis, the demise of Fannie and Freddie, the Federal Reserve's failure to turn the trend, and lots more. The book was Robert Prechter?s Conquer the Crash, published in early 2002, when the Dow was above 10,000 and the financial world was partying around-the-clock. Fast forward to today: the average U.S. homeowner has suffered a decline of 30% to 40% in property value. Stocks and commodities had their biggest fall since 1929-1932. Fannie Mae is a zombie corporation under the government?s protection. The Fed has pushed every button at its disposal (and then some), to no avail. If Prechter thought a whole new book would help, he'd have written one. But Conquer the Crash is a book-length forecast that's still coming true -- only some of the future has caught up with the specific predictions he published back then. There is much more to come. That means more danger, but also great opportunity. Conquer the Crash, 2nd edition offers you 188 new pages of vital information (480 pages total) plus all the original forecasts and recommendations that make the book more compelling and relevant than the day it published. In every disaster, only a very few people prepare themselves beforehand. Think about investor enthusiasm in 2005-2008, and you'll realize it's true. Even fewer people will be ready for the soon-approaching, next leg down of the unfolding depression. In this 2nd edition, Prechter gives a warning he's never had to include in 30 years of publishing -- namely, that the doors to financial safety are closing all over the world. In other words, prudent people need to act while they can. Conquer the Crash, 2nd Edition readers will receive exclusive online access to the Conquer the Crash Readers Page, where Prechter continually updates the book's recommended services and institutions.

Is depression a disease, a medical disorder suffered by humans for millennia, or is it a modern western malaise? Actually, neither perspective is helpful in trying to get to grips with this uniquely disabling but intriguing state of mind. The truth is that depression is multifaceted: it can lead to great insights and achievements, as well as great tragedies. This book is a critical overview of ideas about depression, some new, some old, which fall under the discipline of 'evolutionary psychology'. Why should a condition causing so much pain and disability occur so commonly? Rather than being a.
