Riaz Mohammed was born into a Muslim family in Pakistan. While a boy in the village of Gujarat, he witnessed a young boy chasing cattle into a fast-flowing stream. The boy was pulled from the water, but there was nothing that could be done for him—and he died. It was then that the author decided to be a doctor, so he could help people. Eventually, the author and his family immigrated to Scotland. There, he was treated unkindly, but he was determined to navigate his way through life. At age sixteen, he saw a vision of Jesus Christ while at camp. He converted to Christianity, which only made his life more complicated, but he studied hard and became a surgeon. He had started a family of his own and was at the top of his career when he contracted Hepatitis B—and he had to start over again in an entirely new way. Through it all, God worked in miraculous ways to never let him down.

In the 1870s, surgery was a crude affair performed on the patient's kitchen table. In the frontier town of Rochester, Minnesota, Dr. W. W. Mayo brought his young sons, Will and Charlie, To assist him with operations. Fifty years later, Rochester became a medical mecca as the Mayo brothers were established as world-class surgeons. With a firm belief in sharing information and learning from others, The Mayo brothers proved the benefits of cooperation in a jealously competitive field, and accomplished more than any single colleague of their time. Emily Crofford gives a vivid account of the Mayos' meteoric rise to fame and their contributions as pioneers on the frontier of modern surgery.

The story of a renowned New York doctor, Robert T. Morris (1857-1945), who struggled with a reactionary profession to pioneer sterility, small incisions, and better wound-healing in surgery. Blessed with abundant energy, sagacity, and long life, he also achieved distinction as a naturalist, horticulturist, and explorer, celebrating nature with brilliant prose and poetry. For those days, Morris was a rare visionary, grounded in science and courageously fighting on the side of suffering humanity, though few remember him today. This is an updated edition of a 1935 classic, brimming with case histories starting from the late Victorian Age. The new book is annotated and illustrated, and includes previously unpublished chapters. "A man who had the courage to be an iconoclast for the purpose of safe-guarding humanity." New York Times (1935) "This is not a textbook but an arresting account of medicine and society in the not too distant past." Howard W. Jones, Jr., M.D., Johns Hopkins and Eastern Virginia Medical Schools (2013) "In 1935, Morris' book was a best-seller; this revision from Gosden and Walker (Morris' granddaughter) could easily do the same ... Far more of a human and social portrait than a medical text, this reissue fills the prescription for fascinating reading." Kirkus (September 16, 2014)

Doctors fix people. They might get their hands a little bloody in the process, but they get the job done. At least that's what we expect of them. But what happens when a physician breaks or become ill? Can't they just fix themselves? Is it even possible? Once a physician becomes ill or mentally broken, are they done, lepers for life? This Force of Memory chronicles a surgeon's spiral into addiction. It is a memoir of a physician who becomes an addict after experiencing the horrors of medical error and PTSD first hand. For a surgeon it is almost incomprehensible that the current/best addiction treatment programs have a "spiritual" basis. But they do. This Force of Memory explores the medical/spiritual paradox that is the essence of modern addiction treatment. It is the memoir of a surgeon who, to his own surprise, discovers a healing mechanism quite removed from the operating room.
