Kabuki Plays On Stage Volume 3

Author : James R. Brandon
ISBN : 0824824555
Genre : Drama
File Size : 52.11 MB
Format : PDF, Kindle
Download : 815

Darkness and Desire, 1804-1864, is the third volume in a monumental new series-the first collection of kabuki play translations to be published in nearly a quarter of a century. Fifty-one plays, published in four volumes, vividly trace kabuki's changing relations to Japanese society during the premodern era. The fourteen plays translated in Volume 3, Darkness and Desire, 1804-1864, mark an extreme point in the development of kabuki dramaturgy. The plays are remarkable, even within kabuki, for their intense theatricality, gutsy individualism of character, cold-blooded and ferocious violence, realism pushed into fantasy and grotesquery, novelty for its own sake, sexual aggressiveness, and assertion of female will. The plays depict a society in extremis, the end of an era, a time often marked by unmitigated darkness and desire.

Prose Vol 3

Author : Wystan Hugh Auden
ISBN : 0691133263
Genre : English prose literature
File Size : 20.36 MB
Format : PDF, Docs
Download : 690
Read : 224

This book contains all the essays and reviews that W.H. Auden wrote during the years when he was living in England, and also includes the full original versions of his two illustrated travel books, Letters from Iceland (written in collaboration with Louis MacNeice) and Journey to a War (written in collaboration with Christopher Isherwood). Auden's early prose ranges from extravagant indiscreet travel diaries through sharply observed critiques of writers from John Skelton to Winston Churchill. It includes studies of Communism and Christianity; audaciously wide-ranging essays on literature, psychology, and politics; and writings about gossip, sex, prisons, and schools. The editor's notes include explanations of contemporary and private allusions. The long Last Will and Testament written in verse by Auden and MacNeice, which Evelyn Waugh described as a gossip column, is annotated in full. The book will interest not only Auden's many admirers, but everyone concerned with twentieth-century literature and culture. About the series: In 1928, Stephen Spender hand-printed thirty copies of a small volume of poems by his friend W.H. Auden--the first published book by a man who was to become the dominant literary figure of his generation and one of the century's greatest poets. Sixty years later, Princeton University Press inaugurated an edition of the complete works of Auden, which is intended to serve as the definitive text for all the works Auden published or intended to publish in the form in which he expected to see them printed: his plays and other drama, libretti, essays and reviews, and poems. The Complete Works of W.H. Auden will provide a unique opportunity to solve the numerous textual problems connected with the severe revisions Auden made in his own works. The texts are newly edited from Auden's manuscripts by Edward Mendelson, the literary executor of the Auden estate.

"This volume is composed of thirteen essays by an international group of acclaimed Renaissance scholars on the presence of Anne More Donne in the poetry of her husband. In his epitaph for his wife upon her death in 1617, John Donne called her "Faeminae lectissimae, dilectissimaeque" - a woman "most choice" and "most beloved and loving": but these Latin terms of endearment also figured her as a woman both "well-read" and "very well-read." This book aims to endorse and to explore that view of her that is espoused by the poet in his epitaph through readings of his "readings" of her presence and absence as central subjects of Donne's own presentations of himself, his world, and his God."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Curse Tablets And Binding Spells From The Ancient World

Author : John G. Gager

In the ancient Greco-Roman world, it was common practice to curse or bind an enemy or rival by writing an incantation on a tablet and dedicating it to a god or spirit. These curses or binding spells, commonly called defixiones were intended to bring other people under the power and control of those who commissioned them. More than a thousand such texts, written between the 5th Century B.C.E. and the 5th Century C.E., have been discovered from North Africa to England, and from Syria to Spain. Extending into every aspect of ancient life--athletic and theatrical competitions, judicial proceedings, love affairs, business rivalries, and the recovery of stolen property--they shed light on a new dimension of classical study previously inaccessible. Here, for the first time, these texts have been translated into English with a substantial translator's introduction revealing the cultural, social, and historical context for the texts. This book will interest historians, classicists, scholars of religion, and those concerned with ancient magic.
