The study compared the efficiency of decimal and sexagesimal, or normal, time systems in the solution of addition problems, using the time required to reach a solution and the number of errors as dependent variables. Twelve subjects solved sets of addition problems composed of 8, 16, or 24 digits, using the decimal and sexagesimal time systems. When the conversion process required by the sexagesimal system was included in the analysis, the results clearly showed that addition using the sexagesimal system required significantly more time (1 1/2 to 2 1/2 times as much) and produced significantly more errors (1 1/2 to 3 times as many). When the conversion process required by the sexagesimal system was excluded from the analysis, there was no significant difference between the two time systems on either dependent variable. (Author).

Operational Amplifier Speed and Accuracy Improvement proposes a new methodology for the design of analog integrated circuits. The usefulness of this methodology is demonstrated through the design of an operational amplifier. This methodology consists of the following iterative steps: description of the circuit functionality at a high level of abstraction using signal flow graphs; equivalent transformations and modifications of the graph to the form where all important parameters are controlled by dedicated feedback loops; and implementation of the structure using a library of elementary cells. Operational Amplifier Speed and Accuracy Improvement shows how to choose structures and design circuits which improve an operational amplifier's important parameters such as speed to power ratio, open loop gain, common-mode voltage rejection ratio, and power supply rejection ratio. The same approach is used to design clamps and limiting circuits which improve the performance of the amplifier outside of its linear operating region, such as slew rate enhancement, output short circuit current limitation, and input overload recovery.

The21stInternationalConferenceonInformationProcessinginMedicalImaging(IPMI) washeldJuly5–10,2009at theCollegeofWilliam andMaryin Williamsburg,Virginia, USA. The conference was the latest in a series of biennial scienti?c meetings, the last being held in July of 2007 in the south of The Netherlands, during which new dev- opments in the acquisition, analysis, and use of medical images were presented. IPMI is one of the longest running conferences devoted to these topics in medical imaging. The ?rst IPMI conference was held in 1969, when a group of young scientists working in nuclear medicine gathered to discuss the current problems in their ?eld. Since that time the conference has expanded into other medical imaging acquisition modalities, including ultrasound, optics, magnetic resonance, and x-ray imaging techniques. IPMI is now widely recognized as one of the most exciting and in?uential meetings in m- ical imaging, with a unique emphasis on active participation from all attendees and a strong commitment to vigorous discussion and open debate. A wide variety of topics are covered at IPMI meetings, all within a single-track f- mat. This year 150 full-length manuscripts were submitted to the conference. Of these, 26 papers were selected for oral presentation and 33 were accepted as posters. Subm- sions were carefully reviewed by at least three members of the Scienti?c Review C- mittee, who evaluated the novelty, methodological development, and scienti?c rigor of each manuscript. A Paper Selection Committee, comprising the conference co-chairs and three senior investigators, took on the dif?cult task of creating a meeting program.

Everyone is familiar with the speed-accuracy trade-off (SAT). To make good choices, we need to balance the conflicting demands of fast and accurate decision making. After all, hasty decisions often lead to poor choices, but accurate decisions may be useless if they take too long. This notion is intuitive because it reflects a fundamental aspect of cognition: not only do we deliberate over the evidence for decisions, but we can control that deliberative process. This control raises many questions for the study of choice behaviour and executive function. For example, how do we figure out the appropriate balance between speed and accuracy on a given task? How do we impose that balance on our decisions, and what is its neural basis? Researchers have addressed these and related questions for decades, using a variety of methods and offering answers at different levels of abstraction. Given this diverse methodology, our aim is to provide a unified view of the SAT. Extensive analysis of choice behaviour suggests that we make decisions by accumulating evidence until some criterion is reached. Thus, adjusting the criterion controls how long we accumulate evidence and therefore the speed and accuracy of decisions. This simple framework provides the platform for our unified view. In the pages that follow, leading experts in decision neuroscience consider the history of SAT research, strategies for determining the optimal balance between speed and accuracy, conditions under which this seemingly ubiquitous phenomenon breaks down, and the neural mechanisms that may implement the computations of our unifying framework.

Updated and expanded, this second edition satisfies the same philosophical objective as the first -- to show the importance of problem posing. Although interest in mathematical problem solving increased during the past decade, problem posing remained relatively ignored. The Art of Problem Posing draws attention to this equally important act and is the innovator in the field. Special features include: * an exploration ofthe logical relationship between problem posing and problem solving * a special chapter devoted to teaching problem posing as a separate course * sketches, drawings, diagrams, and cartoons that illustrate the schemes proposed * a special section on writing in mathematics

Research has shown that algebra is the doorway and gateway for future success of students in many aspects, including high school graduation, attending and success in college, and professional earning power. And the most important key to students’ success in algebra is their readiness. This book is not only a program that addresses algebra readiness; it is also a fundamental reform effort, based on the National Mathematics Advisory Panel’s (NMAP’s) Final Report (spring, 2008). The book approaches mathematic skills deficiencies on an individual basis, much like an IEP addresses the individual needs of a student with disabilities. The Reaching Algebra Readiness (RAR) process consists of four components: (1) Diagnostic, assessing student’s mastery of the skills needed to take algebra; (2) Prescriptive, developing an individualized plan to address specific math deficiencies; (3) Intervention, utilizing tools and resources (parental involvement, effective teaching strategies, etc), to improve students’ mathematics skills; and (4) Drills and Effective Teachings Strategies, mathematics is a discipline and, simply, there is no way of avoiding practice and drilling in reaching algebra readiness, which can be enhanced significantly by implementing proven effective teaching strategies. The Reaching Algebra Readiness (RAR) process and the related materials presented in this book will be revolutionary in helping all students acquire the math skills needed for success in algebra and beyond. This book is a must-guide for math teachers, parents who home school, parents who are looking for solutions, and educators pursuing fundamental education reforms.
