Excerpt from Speaking of Ellen I could not have made that bold ascent, but by the new light I saw many things. I learned that the prison had doors whose bolts, though rusted in their sockets, were not immovable. I realized also, for the first time, the utter woe that the darkness had concealed. Excerpt from Oral English or the Art of Speaking This book has been written to supply a need. The vocational and civic importance of the ability to speak has been recognized by teachers of English throughout the country, but as yet the meaning of Oral English is rather vaguely and variously understood. We are con scious of our goal, but we lack method in our efforts to attain it. It is true that we no longer imagine that the art of speaking can be taught in a half-dozen lessons to the commencement speaker or the interscholastic debater. Excerpt from Speaking of Home: Being Essays of a Contented Woman Day. Indeed, with all the aids to housekeeping worked out by modern science and sociological theory easily accessible, it is taken for granted that every woman manages her home in the same casual but thorough way in which she goes to church, knits, or plays bridge. By all means, compe tence! But as for enthusiasm? That is another question. The wife and mother of these days is expected to be efficient in her housekeeping, as a matter. Excerpt from Effective Public Speaking in Business Life Now a word as to directness and earnestness 111 delivery. To be direct one must speak to not at or, over his audience. Direct; ness is the searching out element which 1s so charming in conver sation, and which should be carried into public address. It is strange why so many then get up in the pulpit or on the platform' and ass'ume an ethereal air, and take on the heavenly tone. The singsong, chanting method destroys directness. Excerpt from Speech and the Teacher These pages have been prepared in order that teachers and prospective teachers may draw strength from the contributions of speech. These pages do not presume to contain all that speech has to offer, but they do present enough of the bases of speech as related to teaching to point the way for the student. The purpose of the text is to aid the student who Wishes to be come an efficient classroom teacher. This text is designed for all prospective teachers. It is not a text designed to prepare teachers of speech. The effort is to prepare all teachers to use speech more effectively in all their classroom and extra-classroom work. Those students who will continue in their study of speech that they may become teachers of speech should find much to aid them in their future studies, but the emphasis is away from the training of Specialists. It is felt that there is too much that the classroom teacher needs to know about speech for teaching to spend time giving tech nical details which the future teacher of speech will learn in the more advanced courses. Further, it is felt that this type of detail would have little bearing upon the classroom teacher's ability to use the principles of speech presented. Therefore, detail and technical discussions beyond a necessary minimum have been avoided. Basically, this text endeavors to relate teaching principles with speech principles. Pedagogical references and applica tion have been held high throughout. Three major aspects have been developed: first, the speech of the teacher; second, the speech used by the teacher in teaching; and third, the speech used by the teacher for professional growth. Excerpt from Methods in Elementary English: An Introduction to the Teaching of Good English in Speaking and Writing The book, however, is not intended for the beginner only. The experienced teacher will find in the General Suggestions, in the Language Games, and in the sections dealing specifically with the work of the first, second and third grades, material and suggestions appli cable to her own class, in whatever year it may be. By studying the provisions for the earlier grades and by visits to the classrooms of these grades, she will under stand clearly what her own pupils have already done and what the unified plan to which this book is an introduction requires that they shall do. All successful work in English composition, whether oral or written, is based on the formation of correct language habits by daily practice. Helping a child to understand that an expression is incorrect does little, if anything, towards overcoming his bad habit; a knowl edge of grammatical rules will not cause a child to em ploy accurate English. Only as he uses the proper expression often enough to make it his own - to make it habitual - will he use, in his unconscious choice of language, better English. In the upper grades the study of grammar will confirm and strengthen good habits already formed in the grades below, but grammar itself cannot be the basis of the children's correct choice of language. Good language habits should be formed long before the time arrives for studying technical grammar. In the choice of subject matter for the children's com positions, in the building of power in sentence and para graph structure, and in the games and other exercises suggested for use in corrective work, the aim of the authors has been to provide for the gradual and natural formation of habits of correct speech and writing.
